Not specifically a song about death, but due to the fact that Denny sings it, I've always associated it as such, and it is one that will be played at my wake...

This just kills me.

Yep.  This is the song I've told my wife to play after I die.

I don't want a funeral.  Cremate me, then play this song once and swear to remember it every day.

Vince Gill is a national treasure.  Guitar virtuoso, one of the best voices in popular music of any genre, terrific songwriter, scratch golfer, and married to Amy Grant.

He started writing that tune about Keith Whitley but only finished it when his own brother passed.

It is impossible for me to listen to this song without getting teared up.

Sometimes when you're doing simple things around the house
maybe you'll think of me and smile
You know I'm tied to you like the buttons on your blouse
Keep me in your heart for awhile

Just typing the words gets me verklempt.

Jason Isbell at the peak of his songwriting genius.

Not about death, but this is the song that I have requested at my funeral since I was in my late 20s.  Long story.

My son had this album when he was a teenager.  Overall, I wasn't impressed, but thought this song was really good, if a bit repetitive.

I don't think I've ever heard that gal Yola -- THAT'S a voice!

Slight detour:  A bit like a soulful Tracy Chapman vibe in that first one.

DBT used to close a lot of their shows with it.

I guess this might be better suited for the "Songs about Shipwrecks that Caused Death" thread:

Holy crap.  That version...it's amazing.  It's a perfect female counterpunch of a great song.  And starting with the Honduran mother traveling north with her family....fuck.  That feeling reminds me just a bit of REK's "Mariano" -- my wife gets annoyed as hell with me when I listen to that song.  "You just play it over and over, drink, and cry."  Goddamned right I do.

Dude...1952 Vincent Black Lightning is one of my all time fucking favorite songs.  It's just a goddamned masterpiece.  Goddammit, I think tonight, I'm going to pull up this thread, play the fucking tunes on it, drink whiskey, and ruminate on things that require rumination.

Reminds me of my grandparents.

"The Parting Glass"  is a traditional Irish funeral song i.e. one that is sung/played at funerals.  There are literally hundreds of versions of it on YouTube. Here are three of my favorites.  The lyrics change a little bit depending on  who is singing it but they are roughly these:

Oh all the money that e'er I spent
I spent it in good company
And all the harm that e'er I've done
Alas, it was to none but me
And all I've done for want of wit
To memory now I can't recall
So fill to me the parting glass
Good night and joy be with you all
Oh all the comrades that e'er I've had
Are sorry for my going away
And all the sweethearts that e'er I've had
Would wish me one more day to stay
But since it falls unto my lot
That I should rise and you should not
I'll gently rise and I'll softly call
Good night and joy be with you all
Good night and joy be with you all

I love Amanda Shire's attitude during her part.  She and Brandi did an excellent job of reworking Webb's lyrics.  And I never knew Natalie Hemby had such a good voice.  Thought she was 'just' a songwriter.

Here's a few than came to mind:

BINGO!  Plus, Muerta hit another spot I was aiming for with "Seasons In The Sun."  Sappy, 70s shit.  I have 3 more on the list if anyone wants to take a stab.

Sam Stone.

There's a million good versions of that one, but it fits.

Johnny died right before ACL and Roseanne was supposed to play that year.  When the last act played Sunday night, and all the lights went up they played the following.  Most folks didn't notice.  But you could look out across the crowd and see all the people who's ears had been pricked.  Hearing that blasting through Zilker was magic.

Billy Keep Your Head Low.....that is another one from the sappy 70s list.

Have two more.    And Sam Stone....what a great song.  Can't believe I didn't post that one.  "Climbing walls while sitting in a chair."  What a line.

I don’t remember all the lyrics, does Sam stone die at the end?

also, does Tom Dooly count as a dying song?

Wherever You Will Go--The Calling

Although it's not clear if it's about death or just leaving, I've always thought it was about death.

A) Yes.

B) Tom Dooly is definitely dying.  The Condemned seems like a whole sub-genre of dying.  Not sure if that's where OP was going or not.
