Texas Recruiting Notes 2023: Strippers, Monkeys, and 5-Stars

Neither Tyler Johnson nor Pat Hudson lived up to their considerable hype. The OL we've had drafted in the past dozen years have been 3 star recruits. Get a bunch of guys who have the frame and intelligence and you'll probably have enough depth to survive a season for once.

To be fair to Patrick Hudson, he was actually very good, but had an unfortunate early end to his career.

What's your take on our OL haul so far this year? Who do you see as the potential contributors in 2-3 years? I see a lot of size but are they agile? I remember some of our past OLs with size could not block air to save their lives.

We should have never allowed Lagaryon Carson to travel through Silsbee en route to Austin.

The OL numbers.

2018 class - Angilau and Jones

2019 class - no one is left

2020 class - Garth, Parr, Karic, Majors, and Goram-Welch

2021 class - Conner and Merrill

After the 2022 season, I could see Conner and Majors being the only OL remaining on this roster from the Herman classes. That would put the OL number at 13 with the current 4 from the 2023 class and why it's likely Flood wants 1 more.

Jesus. Please spoiler that kind of horror porn in the future.

After his Aggie OV and quotes that they "gave him something to think about," I would be pretty thrilled if Baxter committed to us and shut things down.

ATM did the same thing with Baxter, Hicks, and Muhammed this past weekend that they did with recruits all during the 2022 cycle. They put a mountain of potential money in front of the player and parents, they talked about being the class that cinches the national title for ATM, and talked a whole bunch of shit about Texas. Fisher is making Baxter his response recruit to Arch Manning and they're offering Walter Nolen money.

Unfortunately for ATM, as I've been stating for months now, they're not going to be getting their fastball by anyone in this cycle. Everyone is offering money now, and they can frame it in legitimate ways. On top of that, Texas understands fully now how Fisher is hard selling against them and what objections need to be overcome. Meanwhile, ATM has their own questions that need to be answered, particularly why they've never even won their division in the SEC. It works both ways.

ATM is going to win the pure mercenary recruitments at a higher percentage of the time than the recruitments in which it's about more than just money. So whoever the Nolen type is, they're going up against UGa, Tenn, Miami, Oregon for them. The guys that feel like football fits for any program, they've got nothing special to offer those guys.

Baxter may well decide ATM is his best fit. That considered, he's not a mercenary. He likes Texas a ton. Texas money, I promise you, as well as the admin, has a hard-on right now for bringing pain to USC and ATM with all of their bullshit from the last cycle into the end of the 2022 transfer window. If Baxter goes to ATM, it isn't because Walter Nolen money got it done versus anyone else, especially us.

Goosby has tackle athleticism. I think Chatman may, but his highlights are predominantly him run blocking. The other 2 are going to be interior guys.

I think Goosby and Chatman appear to be good developmental takes when you have 3 sure fire OTs in the previous class that will be playing for 3 years. If they don't work out by year 3, you likely have another Banks level prospect in the pipeline.

well, when you can't sell a winning tradition (at the national championship, conference championship or division championship level), putting players in the NFL (Texas coming off the worst decade in program history has 36 players in the NFL on active rosters vs A&M at 39 lol), recent results (insert Sumlin = Jimbo pointing spidermans meme) or beating your rivals...what else do you have to sell but $$$ and negative recruiting Texas?

it's like TCU under Patterson, except somehow more sad.

edit: imagine selling any prospect who is at minimum like 14 months away from playing in a game as them being THE one guy away you are from winning the national championship with a QB room of Haynes King, Max Johnson and Conner Weigman

A few thoughts:

1) I know I've made ranting about the numbers a meme with you guys at this point, but just to hammer it home, Texas doesn't give a shit if it signs 35 guys this cycle. Or adds 10 guys from the portal. Not saying either happens, but there are no counters. They'll take developmental guys and keep going after big names at the same positions. There's zero operational risk to doing so.

2) It's all about cultural risk/impact and Sarkisian believes he's building a meritocracy. Don't like who we're recruiting at your position? Get better or get out.

3) I have said it repeatedly lately, but Texas is not going to get beaten due to money at this point. Pretty much in any sport, but for certain in football. Guys may go elsewhere that Texas was willing to throw money at, but Texas isn't going to be beaten just due to money.

4) They'll take more OL. There are several they're going to stay on, irrespective of the 4 they've committed or the 7 they just signed.

5) I expect Texas to land Shelby, Cook, Gullette, the SOC edge, and 4 out of their 5 top DB targets.

6) I will be surprised if Texas doesn't land Baxter.

7) I will be shocked if Texas lands Hicks, who's being shopped and who isn't in love with UT's scheme for his position.

8 ) Shelby's little sister is going into 8th grade and can already dunk. There is additional upside for landing him if the UT WBB program is a top 5 program soon.

I am wondering if the economy turning over and the interest rates spiking is going to squeeze aggy's Nuveax Riche boosters that were making these NIL promises to the last cycle. If things get tight and people start defaulting on promises and then they start shifting more and more NIL responsibility to the oil guys, at some point those guys are going to say fuck all this.

It seems like a lot of developmental pieces that have good size and frames. They certainly have the size, and I can see what they are going for. I like the idea of Cojoe.

But I often hesitate to try an evaluate OL because the closer you get to the ball on offense the harder it is to really nail an eval without knowing the kid very well on/off the field, having a good plan for them, and watching hours of tape. I think Texas fans have learned that first hand with guys like Williams and Cosmi.

These guys could end up like them or Christian Jones (i.e. long term projects that need stability in the coaching position).

What I do like is that they are volume recruiting the position.

Sure, but then who's 5th?

Edit to add: MHP is not a DB take anymore, so wouldn't be 5th in this hypothetical. We'd still have to be recruiting one of the aggy corners, or be working guys we assumed were out like Pleasant, Bell, or Vickers

The Huddle: Scatter-shooting a handful of recruiting notes

Hudson Standish

— I had a really good talk with Texas priority EDGE Braylan Shelby last night and will post quotes from his recap of the official visit later this week once the recruiting momentum slightly slows down.

The key points of the talk were that Texas definitely matched USC’s official visit from the past weekend and might even hold a slight lead at the moment. However Shelby maintained that it was too early to even think about putting in a pick as he and his family are going to talk about the decision over the next few weeks.

Texas did a really good job pitching the McCombs school of Business in addition to the appeal of Austin as a city. Shelby mentioned that his parents loved the boat tour with the Texas staff and he really loved seeing the new Tesla GigaFactory.

From the jump I’ve said that Pete Kwiatkowski has done a tremendous job in this recruitment and this weekend was no different with a ton of scheme talk focusing on how Shelby would be an immediate impact player at Texas and is their No. 1 priority at EDGE in this recruiting class. In addition to Pete Kwiatkowski’s ace recruiting I was told that Steve Sarkisian had two separate meetings with Shelby and his family while on campus to stress his value to the Longhorns. Shelby told me that the conversations with Sarkisian were extremely impactful.

I asked Shelby one final perceived throwaway question about if the Arch Manning commitment would have any impact on his decision considering that most defensive players tend to answer no to that question. However Shelby told me that it actually showed him that Texas was putting the pieces together and offered some proof of concept to Steve Sarkisian’s program vision.

Shelby also said that Manning hit him up throughout the visit and the two were supposed to hop on the phone later that night to talk recruiting.

— A source I trust confirmed to me over the weekend that Austin Westlake 2023 EDGE Colton Vasek is down to an unofficial top two of Oregon and Texas following official visit season.

The source still felt like Oregon was the leader, but Texas undoubtedly made the biggest move during Vasek’s visits.

Even though Oregon leads at the moment and could grab a commitment over the summer, I can’t shake what a separate source told me pre Texas official visit about this recruitment reminding him of Kelvin Banks in the 2022 cycle. Even if Vasek commits to Oregon, I wouldn’t rule out a close to NSD flip back to the hometown Horns depending on both school’s seasons.

— One of the players I’ve seen the most questions about since the weekend is 2023 Lehi (UT) Skyridge EDGE Tausili Akana. I mentioned in the comments of Liona Lefau’s commitment that I was fading Akana’s chances of ending up in burnt orange and after circling back with a couple national sources still feel like that’s the case.

Texas does have an advantage with Akana’s sister on the volleyball team and the four-star could officially visit Texas during the fall in part to watch his sister’s volleyball games, however other than that dynamic I don’t see Texas stacking up with the other schools in the mix.

Mike and I were on the money with the Lefau commitment and were ready with three stories on the four-star when he popped while a decent amount of the industry considered it a surprise. I think our intel is up to date on Akana as well at the moment.

— I’m expecting one major firework to pop off today with the potential for a few more throughout the week. As the dead period begins it will be extremely interesting to see if Texas can keep this recruiting momentum rolling while the rest of the country waits for the contact period to resume at the end of July.

— Lastly, I mentioned Arch Manning contacting Braylan Shelby earlier in this huddle, but can’t stress enough how impactful and frequent Manning has been as a bell cow recruiter over the past six days or so. We’re keeping our eyes peeled for off the radar elite recruits that might take visits to Texas during the fall.

Has anyone seen Gerry say what he thinks of Mitchell as a prospect? Him being an 87 on On3 certainly doesn’t match up with Texas, A&M and UGA all going after him hard.
Georgia wants him. I want him.

If Texas lands Braylan Shelby, Billy Walton, and Tausili Akana, why the fuck do they need Colton Vasek?

Yes - its 40 minutes - but its the most in depth video on an official visit that I've seen.  Kind of crazy just how much is going on and how many different players the coaches are juggling.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-dNmpEzaRQ

Youtube won't allow the video to embed.

I'm watching this now and so far it's a bunch of video of people standing around waiting for stuff while talking indistinctly.

I'm pretty sure MM leaned over and said "hey man let me hold 20 dollars real quick" to Terry Joseph at 2:37 🤣

Gary Patterson sighting at 7:27. Not sweating.

Jamel Johnson in the background at 10:38. Haven't heard much on him, hope he had a good time.

Byron Murphy (I think) hanging out at 13:22.

MHP at 14:05.

WTF are they talking about at 34:05? Kinda sounds like they're getting down to business on NIL, lol.

Arch again at 38:15.

Couple of points from Standish, re: the above -

- he is still -ahem - "fading" Akana's chances. (Comments in the Huddle post above.)

- on Shelby vs. Vasek - "Shelby is the hybrid EDGE Linebacker they call BUCK or X while Vasek is being recruited as the bigger "JACK" true EDGE"
