Depends, how much did you eat at pluckers

My budget in college my last year was one $1 whopper a day. I finished college lighter than when I graduated high school. I am aging myself with 1 dollar whoppers. Pluckers, lol hamburger helper was a big night for me.

Spoiler

Horns247 was live in Austin for the biggest remaining recruiting event of the offseason as the Longhorns get closer to the 2022 season kicking off.

The Texas Pool Party recruiting event was loaded with talent featuring the nation’s No. 1 player and Texas commit Arch Manning along with DeSoto wide receiver Johntay Cook, Austin Westlake EDGE Colton Vasek, Baton Rouge Woodlawn CB Jordan Matthews and dozens of other elite prospects.

A common theme from every recruit and source we spoke to was how impressed they were watching the Longhorns’ player led practice before eventually heading to the pool party. Specific highlights included drills from the Texas June camp translating to actual practice, how loud and energetic the players were and how they lead opposed to the coaches, and lastly the availability the players showed to recruits after practice ended.

Here are some quick hits less than 30 minutes after the end of the event.

— New Orleans Isidore Newman QB Arch Manning didn’t partake in interviews today but was extremely active throughout the day recruiting uncommitted prospects Colton Vasek and Jordan Matthews to Texas along with building bonds with new commits Payton Kirkland and Sydir Mitchell.

One of the biggest positives I heard from recruits on Manning was how approachable he was throughout the visit and especially at the pool party.

— Baton Rouge (LA) Woodlawn CB Jordan Matthews had nothing but positives to say after his visit and emphasized that this was his fourth time in Austin. The four-star corner said he planned to move up his commitment date to sometime in the near future. I love where Texas sits in this recruitment and a ton of credit needs to be given to Terry Joseph, Brandon Harris, and the pair of five-star Louisiana natives if the Horns can grab Matthews’ verbal pledge.

— Austin Westlake 2023 EDGE Colton Vasek understandably didn’t give out any interviews today with his commitment date on the horizon so I checked in with a couple sources on campus and from Westlake to check the temperature for today’s visit. I do think Texas took a step forward today and I’ve heard a ton of promising intel, but I’m not totally sure if it’ll be enough to knock out Oregon this summer. I’ve mentioned it 10+ times so I’m sure people are sick of hearing it by now, but a source has maintained since early June that this gives him a Kelvin Banks vibe where Oregon takes the first commitment and Texas wins out with proximity to home towards the end of the cycle. Hopefully today’s positive momentum can accelerate that timeline for the Horns.

— I had a great conversation with Shreveport (LA) Northwood DL Ta’Derius Collins after the pool party and the massive defender gave rave reviews from this visit. Collins said that he has no timeline for a decision and is very open at this stage of the process. He told me he is planning an official to Texas for the fall and mentioned that the Alabama game seemed like a nice weekend to make the trip.

— Smithson Valley 2024 WR Freddie Dubose isn’t shy about the fact that Texas is his leader right now and I do think he’ll eventually end up at Texas. However he reiterated again today that he’s going to take his time with the process before making a decision next year. He’ll be at Texas A&M this weekend with his HS teammate and A&M commit Colton Thomasson.

— I‘ve been taking with sources on Derion Gullette for the past 48 hours or so and still feel confident in my Texas pick even though he missed today’s event. I could even see Gullette setting a public commitment date in the near future with next week making the most sense. As I mentioned earlier today it’ll be really interesting to see if Gullette actually does make it to Texas A&M this weekend ahead of his decision date.

— I’ve been pretty vocal about how much I like Lucas Lovejoy 2024 LB Payton Pierce as a prospect. The 6-foot-1 multi-sport athlete said that he’s planning on making his commitment next offseason but schools like Texas and Oklahoma are in great spots early. In addition to leading the Leopards on defense Pierce will likely get heavy snaps at QB this year.

— Texas seemed to make a serious move with Duncanville 2024 DB Ka’Davion Dotson today. Dotson and his close friend 2024 Lancaster DB Corian Gipson both had a meeting with Coach Steve Sarkisian and Coach Terry Joseph which Dotson continued to rave about even as I asked about other schools. It’s early but after this visit Texas is a major player here.

— We spoke with a half dozen commits on the day and will save most of that audio for those individual interviews. There was a common theme in today being a strong bonding experience for the group in addition to the event serving as an opportunity for the commits to organize their efforts on priority uncommitted players.

— 2024 San Antonio Veterans Memorial RB James Peoples was easily one of my favorite conversations on the day. The 5-foot-9 RB spoke eloquently about Tashard Choice’s role in practice and gave Texas glowing reviews. If Texas takes two running backs for the 2024 cycle Peoples and elite IMG Academy RB Jerrick Gibson make the most sense as of today.

— Two players we’re still hoping to hear from are Garland Naaman Forest’s Markis Deal and Moss Point (MS) DL Jamarious Brown.

I guess, if you say so. But isn't he pretty similar to Ethan Burke in terms of size and weight.  Watching the two play last year Vasek was every bit as good if not better than Burke, and looked a little bigger or at least not as skinny.

If there's better options than I get it but if not, seems like a pretty good take.

Burke looked like a sausage link in high school. He was only two years into playing football. Vasek is much more built out with pretty lean muscle mass. For the record, I dont think he struggles to add weight, but Burke’s athletic ceiling is higher when you consider how much natural weight he will gain in a college S&C program.

So Vasek to Oregon and Shelby to USC.  What's plan B at EDGE/DE?

Maybe Collins?

Find a new DC/edge position coach who can actually coach and recruit… or even just one really.

Akana would seem to be the next best option. That 5 star from Florida is probably a pipe dream.  There was a 4 star from Louisiana that was mentioned a couple months ago.  He had good film.  I forgot his name.

Is the Damien Wilson stuff smoke and mirrors or is it really something to it??

At the end of the day, we can only recruit so good , we have to show up on the field this year, which I think we will!!

Shelby as a plan A? Absolutely

Vasek as a plan A? Ehh, you have to recruit him though

Both are Jacks to me, and Vasek probably looks better if he can slide inside.

Let’s see how things shake out once the season gets going. If we give Bama a game or somehow beat them, we’re better off having space in the class.

Seriously. One of the rich white underweight westlake DEs has to work out, right?

His Dad is an assistant HS coach. He really think he is rich?

Is anyone going to ask the real question?

Who did we pay today to stay away from THE Pool Party this weekend? Inquiring minds want to know…

Edited by Junior Bonner

I’m not going to die on a hill stanning for Vasek, but with Shelby trending to USC and Akana a total wildcard, he has to be a take.

Take the temperature this week on the edge guys you already know. Then answer the text messages on the ones that we don’t know that are interested and schedule the visits.

I was told edging is how you get Monkeypox

Name those 17 5-stars. It'll be easy to find how bad those coaches in that timetable evaluated.

Cristiano Ronaldo? I guess he's open to a transfer, and definitely experienced. Bit lightweight, though.
