Texas Recruiting Notes 2023: Strippers, Monkeys, and 5-Stars

Spoiler

WR Jalen Hale, Longview (2023):

For a kid that's only been on varsity since he entered high school, Hale is still modest and really enjoys the recruiting process. At 6-foot-3, 180 pounds, the 247 four-star has been receiving offers for over a year. Then Ohio State calls with an offer and he's still excited. They joined OU, Texas A&M, Georgia, and Auburn among his 17 verbal invitations.

Texas is a school keeping tabs on the multi-sport star. Hale told IT that he hears from coach Sarkisian and coach Coleman and confirmed UT's interest.

"I want a good college home, a good coach, and the ability to come in and help the team win," said Hale. "I don't want to sit around 2-3 years. I want to come out of the gate, making an impact somewhere."

A season after celebrating the state championship for the Lobos, he put on a good encore in his sophomore campaign. He tallied 699 yards, on 39 catches, and 10 touchdowns for a team that lost a lot of veterans in 2019.

In the mean time, as he awaits the NCAA's dead period, he continues to lead Longview's basketball team in scoring as they enter the final stretch. Once visits are real, he's eager to get out and see some of these places he's been hearing from for over a year.

One to Watch: Carthage WR Montrel Hatten. The 2023 prospect isn't a burner at 6-foot-1, 175, but the three-sport athlete doesn't lack much more. He already holds offers from Arkansas, Baylor, and SMU, and hears from more SEC and Big 12 schools.

A sex robot would certainly know Surly's weaknesses.

Wells on Renaud

Spoiler

DE/TE Jordan Renaud, Lewisville (2023):

The 6-foot-4, 250-pound move-in from Palmetto, FL is already making an impression on the Lewisville staff. They see an athlete who works hard, competes hard, and brings a good attitude to the Farmers program.

So far he has 12 offers, including Texas, Miami, Texas A&M, OU, and Florida State, all of which are making him feel wanted.

When UT offered recently, he began a relationship with Bo Davis. That bond is only becoming more solid. Davis’ message to the 247 four-star is finding the right place to grow as a man and life after football.

That’s hit home with Renaud, who is in no hurry to make a decision. He just wants to keep getting closer to coaches and tells IT he’d like to help teammate - 2022 RB Damien Martinez - notch another 2,000-yard season in 2021.

He is eager to show his pass-rushing skills, but admits catching touchdowns at tight end is just as fun.

Either way, moving to Texas has been an overwhelmingly positive experience.

There are two elite-elite QBs for 2023 in Arch Manning and Malachi Nelson, who all of the blue bloods and high powered offenses will be fighting over. Some, like USC and OU, are mostly skipping a class in 2022 and ignoring Arch Manning to focus on Nelson.

Interestingly, there are what appears to be two other really good QBs who others might zag for while others are zigging for Arch and Nelson; Eli Holstein of Louisiana and Nicholaus Iamaleava. Both recently received A&M offers.

Wiltfong, Nick Harris, and Collin Kennedy put in CBs for Reuben Owens to Texas

Wait, doesn't Owen's have an Uncle running his recruitment?

Drayton is just getting everything done now so he can take a two-year nap.

And nothing quite elevates the evening like an $80 Islay spewing out your nose.

If this shit goes down, I think I would be okay with it.

Bijan, Jonathan, Jaydon, Rueben... RB Whisperer, give that man respect.

- Intel on Herman screwing up Noah Cain recruitment, who knows if he did similar with 2021 crew. This clearly shows Drayton is respected by recruits.

Is this a Bijan caliber RB?

He appears to be faster in the open field. Bijan, on the other hand, makes better cuts than anyone I have seen in  Texas uniform.

Saw him make some plays as a DB, that’s our angle isn’t it?

I watched them El Campo play a couple of games.  They had a few good RBs, so Owens didn't get to amass jawdropping numbers, but every time he ran with the ball I marveled that he was just a sophomore.  He is going to be great if he doesn't sustain a serious injury.  He's a war daddy.

Happy if he commits but hard to get too excited with a 2023 running back when every year it’s a fight to hold on to Drayton.

If Sark turns out to be a good HC, it won't be an issue. Saban has massive coaching turnover every year and yet he rarely loses any recruit.

There's always an uncle

A) is it that much of a fight, really? What have we done in concrete terms in response to those vague rumors?

B) If our assistants are leaving for higher positions, it's a good sign.

Plus having guys in the boat and recruiting others does invest them in the program more, there's gotta be some Bud Elliot or Bill Connolly type who has done analysis on how length committed factors in to keeping the commitment. But the most important part is momentum on the class.
