Wow. Anthony Fera. Forgot that dude existed. Wasn't he the PSU transfer?

Yes he was. Was a finalist for the Lou Groza award after a good season at Pedo State, but he was never quite healthy on the 40 Acres. He dealt with a nagging groin injury during his tenure.

I remember this.

“Russell Erxleben. Russell Erxleben (born January 13, 1957) is a former American footballplayer and currency investor. He shares the record for the longest field goal, 67 yards, in NCAA history (if not college footballhistory), originally set in 1977 while playing for the University of Texas.”

I was at that game, vs Rice, at DKR , but also remember that is was before rule change when a missed FG would result in other team possession at their own 20. So people would just blast away at FG with minimal consequences.

He wasn’t healthy in 2012, but I don’t remember any issues in 2013. Looking at the numbers,  he was 20/22 on field goals with a long of 50 AND he was the punter, averaging 40.7 with 32 inside the 20. He was a Groza finalist that year too, and a consensus All America.

They allowed use of a tee on FGs as well back then. The rule changed in the late 80s.

The goalposts were also 23'5" wide as opposed to their current width of 18'6"

That guy was exposed as a fraud of a field goal kicker when he had to take it to the ground to go through NFL goalposts (18'6" wide). Sorry, I can't be compelled to be impressed with a lifetime 50% FG average.

While not a Lou Groza candidate, Shoeless Tony Crosby (an end converted to place kicker) was nails with PATs his senior year in 1963 and did hit a couple game winners (blowU comes to mind) during his tenure here. Always kicked without a shoe.

After his UT years he made a distinguished career as an international preservationist architect.

Back then, you were also allowed to bring in a different ball just for kicking.

Erxleben, Steve Little and Tony Franklin all kicked 67 yard field goals that year. The ball looked like the Hindenburg.

So the balls were on fire?

After a 67 yard field goal, they certainly were.

We had an LSU transfer also.  Forgot his name.  He was okay...

Trent Domingue

And Josh Rowland

Domingue was dreadful outside of 30 yds

Rowland was just dreadful period

Both sucked shit through a straw. Domingue had the nice backstory but that shit was more sabotage on our program from LSU.

I still think Stockton was the best one we've had. He just never was in a position for a memorable game winner or on a championship team.

How about Pino!

Pino is lucky we won that national championship in spite of him. He was an easy scapegoat for that game if 4th and 5 had a different result.

Wasn't the story that he only won the right to dress/travel with the team to Lincoln because one of the two kickers ahead of him on the depth chart didn't make the trip?  And something happened in warmups or during the game to the other guy (Lawrence, maybe?)?  And so Bailey handled one kickoff or something and then gets the call on the long FG to end the game.  And his mother was traveling with some friends in New York and were watching the game at a restaurant and her friends had to scream and grab her to get her attention on the TV because he was attempting the game-winning kick?

I dunno about the right to dress, but he got the chance to make that kick because Mack Brown benched the other kicker in the middle of the game after he'd missed 2 (I think) field goals earlier. And it started snowing right before the kick. Mack Brown didn't want to trust a kid who'd missed multiple FGs earlier in the snow, so he went with a freshman unknown dude who became a legend.
