Reports of Explosion at virology/biotechnology institute in Russia

Featured Replies

This seems bad, if true.   Olga Lautman does not seem to be a crackpot.

The Russians clearly cannot be trusted with technology.  They are a third world nation when it comes to this shit.

You are delusional.  They was no explosion.  It's not possible.  Go look into the core yourself.

So we're about to enter a Russian version of The Stand. Guess I should go bake my own bread.

I was thinking the same thing.

Soviet, I mean, Russian karma. They deserve every bit of it for what they have done to the world including their own people since WWII. Fuck Putin and Russia.

half life 3 is finally here!

That lab was only working on a couple of strains of HIV.  Not great.  Not bad.

I've been there in January. It was cold. Novosibirsk is the Russian answer to Los Alamos. It is isolated. There are a bunch of institutes that were put together so scientists could collaborate. Most of the restriction endonucleases used in basic research come from a company that started from the institute in the OP. If you buy REs from Perkin Elmer, Amersham, Invitrogen or whatever their names are now, they most likely came from Novosibirsk.

The most likely cause of a blast is a gas leak. Most of the biologics would be destroyed in the blast. Few are probably airborne. Few survive outside a host for extended periods of time. Still lots of HAZMAT and bleach.

THAT is exactly how every movie about massively dangerous, civilization ending,  pathogens being released into the air begins........

I've been waiting for the Russian remake of The Toxic Avenger.

Huh... I’ll think back to reading this thread as the zombie apocalypse begins.

The funny thing is, Russians are very, very good at basic science and engineering.  It's manufacturing and management of technology where they fuck it all up.

I think Oleg Burov said the same thing.

It's easy to come up with great sounding ideas when you're drunk, but executing them not so much.

They'll drop some sand on the building.  It'll be fine.

So, planet of the 12 monkeys with radioactive smallpox coming to get us?

I for one welcome our new overlords.

I've always been more worried about Oklahoma and giant sucking tornadoes.

Not once but multiple times. I also worked with the CDC on an SBIR grant involving a TB diagnostic. So, of course, they took me on the tour. More disturbing, I worked with a shitty company in Arizona that was working on a prion diagnostics. If we ever had an outbreak, I would turn to them. Maybe since Roche bought them they've fixed their shit, though.
