Looks like he may come to UCLA

Quote

UCLA has ventured into the NCAA transfer portal this season.

A player currently at a powerhouse program will be on campus Tuesday for an unofficial visit.

He's Caleb Johnson, the Texas linebacker, who is originally from Southern California.

UCLA recruited Johnson during the 2019 cycle. He unofficially visited UCLA previously (as you can see from the above photo) but UCLA did not offer. The Fullerton (Calif.) Fullerton College and Murrieta (Calif.) Vista Murrieta product eventually signed with Texas before enrolling there in January.

Johnson was limited in Texas' spring football as he recovered from a shoulder injury that caused him to miss most of his second season at Fullerton College, and has not made any appearances for the Longhorns this season.

It's expected that Johnson will commit to UCLA on this visit, since we've learned Johnson has  primarily shown interest in UCLA since submitting his name into the portal.

Johnson, at 6-1 and 215,  is projected to be an inside linebacker at UCLA, and there is opportunity next season when UCLA loses its two starters and is fairly thin on experienced depth at the position.

Makes sense. He's got good measurables, he just didn't seem to be a culture fit, and got passed up by the other JUCO LB we took (Juwan Mitchell).

Plus we need people who can play football.  We have very few of those right now.

Evaluation bust, aye.

Question is, whose evaluation was it?

Yeah, I mean we have 5 (not counting pass rushers like Ossai and Vaughns).  I’d like to have 6, but we are 2 deep.  Need guys like Overshown and Foster to get healthy though.  This guy must have been real bad.  Maybe we should see what Brock and Ehlinger can do.

It’s hard to say if it was an evaluation bust because he was recovering from a shoulder injury all offseason. There were some rumors he wasn’t rehabbing as diligently as he should, so maybe we missed on his work ethic, but this seems more like an injury not working out than just a straight up mistake in evaluation.

Yeah, about that...

So you want a dude who hasn't played in 2 seasons?  Will he even be eligible to play next fall?  Don't transfers have to sit a year?  Or is he gonna get a bullshit "they were mean to me" waiver?

Have you watched UCLA play lately? Caleb Johnson has two legs and walks upright. He's a take for them.

I’m not even sure the second leg is a requirement.

Not sure "experienced depth" is the phrase you're looking for. Maybe 3rd year juco transferring from blue blood where he hasn't played in 2 years?

If Caleb is eligible to play in 2020 for UCLA is that really a bad thing?  Injured in final year of JUCO.  Barely plays at Texas.

Good luck at UCLA Caleb...

THis.

Isn’t playing for Chip Kelly punishment enough?

Well, he didn't really impact us in any way (we even had room to take the guy who took his spot), so good luck and all that.

Does it mess up scholarship/initial scholarship counters?  Does it mess up the academic ratings?

On the bright side, at least he didn't sucker-punch any tennisers on hos way out.

Good luck to him.  Hope he gets healthy and gets to show what he can do.
