Oldest started kindergarten today. Thought it would be harder than it was, but we were standing outside the school for so long in the heat that I couldn't feel any emotion other than "why the fuck is it so gotdamn hot and humid and why did I get dressed for work BEFORE coming here!?!?"

This is why I love my kids school. They don’t let you get out of the car. You drop the kid off at the door and they walk them in. Doesn’t matter if it’s the first or last day of school. You have to get any pictures at home before you drop them off.

That's how Houston was. Actually a pet peeve of mine in regards to Casis. We always just drop the kids off vs walk in. I am shocked that more kids aren't blown out of the school onto Exposition from the Helicopter Mom rotor wash. It is a fucking zoo there at dropoff, Day 1 or Day 100.

Fortunately, that was only the first-day thing. K-5 stood outside until they opened the doors at 7:30. Going forward, drop off is from 7-7:30 and you can drive up to the door and they escort kids the rest of the way

In case y’all were wondering, school starts the 1st week of August in Phoenix. It’s awesome.

Anyone elses kids school always hitting you up for box tops?  They are transitioning to digital box tops now where you have to scan your receipt.  Screw that, they don't need to know that I'm buying beer and lube with my Cheerios.

My daughter does. I heard about the digital stuff the other day. Fuck that noise.

43 when first was born, 45 when second was born. The are 6 and 4. Boys.  It's crazy and I'm tired.  But I'm tired anyway from teaching and coaching so I can't imagine anything different.

Y'know, truthfully, I didn't need to know that your daughter buys beer and lube with her Cheerios either.

Had our 2nd yesterday at noon. Not that I’ve slept a fucking moment since then. Walking around a dark hospital room with her so that my wife can sleep

Now have a 1.5 year old boy and a newborn girl. Wild times

To go along with the age thing - I’m 30, wife is 28.

You can buy box tops on ebay. I know that is crazy, but hear me out. You pay a little premium, but its probably a better payback than cub scout popcorn, girl scout cookies, or band candy bars. Your kid's class gets the popcorn party. If you buy them outside the two big turn-in seasons, the premium is way lower. The prices have jumped up. I have quit my job and make six figs solely on box top arbitrage. Buy in June, sell in September, easy money. (okay, some of this is a lie)

How good of a sleeper is your 1.5 old? My 14mo finally started sleeping 6+hrs through the night and only needing a bottle once.. and it's amazing

None of that matters, I just want to know how dead you're going to be if 1.5yo is a bad sleeper. Good luck, assuming wife and newbie are good?

I’m 48, just dropped off my oldest at college a few weeks ago. My wife was having borderline panic attack’s about it for months. I didn’t think it would be a big deal until I walked out of her dorm leaving her sitting on her bed. I kept seeing her as a 3 year old sitting on her bed at home. I cried like a baby all the way home.

Just celebrated his 6 month birthday a few days ago and ready for gameday

That's a great pic, reminds me that I need some advice from y'all here in Austin on some swim teachers for the oldest, she's 4.

We have tried Emler, neighbor's pool with private lessons, me teaching her (I was 20 years and several pounds ago a certified lifeguard), and she was making great progress last summer.  This summer has been a 180 degree regression.  Hates the water, cries when we get close to it.  My wife coddles her about it.  I could give a shit if she ever swims one race in her whole life.  But many of my neighbors have pools with gates that are always wide open, she walks into their yards with no regard for the water or where we are, we're invited out to swim parties, boat rides, etc.  I lost her on the hike n' bike for 2 seconds the other day, thought she might end up in the river.  Wife knows it's a necessity she learn to swim but she comes from a family where half the people still don't know how to swim and she didn't learn until grade school.  I've heard about the Swim Nazi lady but wife will never go for it.  Again, I ain't looking for Individual Medley training here, but she just won't budge on learning anymore or even getting near the water...unless of course we aren't looking in which case she makes a fucking beeline to the water when we're at friend's homes or hotels.  /rant   thanks.  any tips?

Both of my kids took lessons at the YMCA. My son is 5 and is like a fish. My daughter is 3 and has repeated the first class twice because she's having problems trusting the backfloat. But they both LOVE their teachers and can't wait to go. Plus you can go to any YMCA pool. We're in Austin but they took their 2nd class of the summer in Round Rock which has an indoor pool so the heat wasn't an issue. My daughter now practices "swimming underwater" when taking a bath when she wouldn't even duck her head before.

If she's having problems being in the pool, start taking her to splash pads first (with no pool there) to get her used to it, then a splash pad with a pool, then the kiddy pool, etc. Playing with other kids and seeing them safely in the water goes a long way towards being comfortable. Make sure she has a good floatie vest and let her pick it out so she knows it's for the pool. Might get her excited to try it out.

T&Ps

My 12 yo hit an in the park home run last night in fall Pony league. He’s a lefty and they put a shift on him leaving effectively one OF to cover left & most of center.

He drilled it to left and it went to fence. Was cool to see.

He pitched one inning as well striking out three, giving up one hit.

Proud papa.

Seems like going opposite field is a lost art

40 weeks was last Wednesday. Going to induce in the morning if this baby is still being lazy by then. Wish me luck.

God speed. Had our first via emergency csection last Weds after they lost the heartbeat completely. I haven't had the easiest life by any means, but I'd never experienced the pure terror I felt as the nurses wheeled her towards the OR as fast as they could. Thankfully we are home now and mom/son are fine. But that fear during those few moments I will never forget.

Positive note: Being a dad is unequivocally the most amazing experience.

Ugh.

Just found out we lost our second today in the very early stages (seven weeks). Makes me so thankful for this little girl.

We used the Swim Nazi for all three of ours.  Your wife needs to get the fuck over it.  The lady has a method that may not be the most pleasant for sensitive moms, but it is all about giving them a crash course on the skills that will save their life in a pool accident.

McCallum grad here.

*RIP Don Caldwell, you crusty old SOB who repeatedly threw basketballs at my head, and who I loved dearly.

Just saw about the loss of the 7 week.  Thoughts and prayers.  I'm so sorry for your loss.

I should have joined this thread earlier. My first kid is now six months old, and he managed to come down with his first cold the same day we gave him his first flu shot. We are giving him Tylenol or Motrin for the fever, some natural stuff to help with the cough and some other medicine to help with silent reflux. Should you happen to give these meds close together, the kid will vomit on you. Discovered that right before bedtime when the wife was out.

I woke up this morning to find out I now have a pretty severe head cold going. It makes sense. Holding the kid to comfort him, he pulls back to look at you and then sneezes right in your mouth, which was open for some dumb reason. How long are these dumb colds supposed to last!?!? Going on 5 days now with mucus extraction, coughing, and sneezing. Fortunately, the fever is long gone.

Still would not change it for anything! I can't believe it has been six months already.

tbc: hang in there and try again. We lost a couple singles before putting two in and getting two out!

telegraph: dad getting puked on is what we do. My daughter rarely does it but her brother has vomited on my art least a dozen times and he's only two.

Sickest I've ever been was when each kid (now 11 & 13) went to daycare.  Few tips I learned we still use today.  Elderberries for viruses (concentrate is the best).  Stuff is witch-doctor amazing.  Neil-Med nasal irrigation for congestion etc.  Nasty, but the relief to the kids (and you) is immediate and get the crud out before a infection sets in.  If It's in there, and won't budge, a TINY, single drop of baby soap (surfectant) helps.  It attacks the bio-film the bacteria builds up - why we wash our hands essentially.  Doesn't hurt.  Tickles.  Smells like baby soap for about an hour.

My little monkeys are getting big. 4 and 2 now. Both yell Texas when they see the state outline, a longhorn or hook em. This morning the youngest one refused a unicorn and then a shark shirt. My wife asked what she wanted to wear and she yelled “Texas!” Damn right.

Love that. Lily asks for “daddy song/Texas song” every night before bed which is The Eyes. Have regaled her with it almost every night since birth.

7mo and I both got a cold this week. First time he's been sick. He got a nasty little case of the croup with it though. Had to get some roids from the doc. Maybe the saddest sound I've ever heard was him half crying in the night. He was only half crying because you could hear it hurt his throat to cry. Seems to be clearing up though.

TBC sorry to hear man.

Fuck miscarriages are the worst. Had one may day 2017 and our rainbow baby boy was born june 2018.

Sick to my stomach reading that news in here

I don’t think I ever used but a day or two of sick leave until I had kids.

Just wait until one kid gets it, gives it to the next kid, who gives it to mom and then after a month of everyone else being sick and you being hyper vigilant about keeping well - you end up with some sort of super mutant virus that you can’t shake for three weeks and end up having to get a prescription inhaler, cough syrup, a 10 day round of antibiotics and a 5 day supply of prednisone.

Yikes! That sounds wonderful. I think this cold is the worst one I’ve had in awhile. Came home from work today and little man is all smiles. I’m blowing my nose every ten minutes and he just laughs at me.

Last year, my then 2-yr-old daughter came down with something on a road trip to Iowa to visit relatives with my parents. We were in Oklahoma at the time so I blame it on that. Get to Iowa and she's not eating much and crying when she swallows. Take her to the ER in a little podunk town where they tell us it's just a viral infection and she'll be fine. A couple days later and she is.

A week later we're on the way home and again in Oklahoma when I start feeling terrible. By the time we get home it's killing me to swallow and it turns out I have strep and it kills me for a couple weeks. Then we find out my mom got it too and it took her down for 3 weeks. Then my niece's husband got it from my mom and it got so bad he was admitted into the hospital.

All from a little girl that was fine 3 days after the first fever.

I'm in the waiting cycle of this right now, coughs and ear infections for both kids a week apart along with Mom getting a nasty virus, tick tock, tick tock....

Poor timing given we are 8 days out from the best day of the year.  I was sick last week after catching something from the kids.  On the mend now and will be ready to pollute my body for 24 hours.

Also, we just found out we are having a 3rd.  So......fuck.  And awesome.
