So the police response response here was to sneak around through the backyard like a fucking ninja and then freak out like a 9 year old when he sees something spooky?  Jesus. What a total fucking idiot.
How about, I don't know just spit-balling here, . . .  knocking on the front door and saying "Police, is everything OK?"

I haven’t read the whole thread, but THIS, especially given the fact that the call was placed to the NON-EMERGENCY number.
Maybe I'm misunderstanding you. If she was a "tough on crime" judge and then put someone away for 5 years for illegal voting, wouldn't that indicate she's likely to prosecute this case aggressively?
As to the murderer, I'm sure he won't testify that he shot through the window with the intent to kill (like Guyger), but I'd be absolutely shocked if he walks.

I believe that Twice is asserting (correctly, IMO), that THIS kind of “tough on crime” stance comes with a heavy dose of “pro-cop”.

Kraus got choked up as he likened the aftermath of the shooting to ants working to build an anthill, when “somebody comes with a hose and washes it away and they just have to start from scratch.”

“We have a great many officers who work extremely hard every day,” Kraus said. “I ask you please do not let the actions of one officer reflect on the other 1,700. There’s absolutely no excuse for this incident.”

Your request is declined.  The culture of American law enforcement, specifically including FW law enforcement, created this cop.  You don't get to disown him and run away from your role in creating this mess.

No it sounds like it’s still the same as when you were here. It’s slow, boring, rural, and lacks dynamism. And I love telling Fort Worthians that. I can sense the insecurity, especially when I tell them I’m from Austin.

I didn't really notice insecurity except as to Dallas, which has a looong history there.  The Dallas insecurity was comical.  They got pissed one time when Channel 5 (which held itself out as the Fort Worth station) fucked up and put "D-FW" on a billboard on 30.  They were usually careful to use "Fort Worth" or "Fort Worth-Dallas Metroplex" or similar.

There are a lot of nice things about Fort Worth.  They have a very competent and close-knit legal community, among other things.  But, they love to talk shit on "Dallas lawyers."  Fucking love it.  It's absurd.

While Sharen Wilson (Tarrant DA) is certainly "lawnorder," that typically doesn't apply equally across the board.

We shall see.

Exactly.  Some defendants are more equal than others, and Wilson seems to be more than willing to do what "the powers that be" ask or require.  The illegal voting prosecution was a GOP special.

Tough on crime is code for hard on poors, and browns.  Can also include whites, but more sparingly.

I’ve also noticed that many people I’ve met have managed to throw in a “we’re nicer than people from Dallas” when we introduce ourselves. And people want to constantly be told how friendly the city is. Quit randomly saying hi to me out in public and stfu.

Even though the law wouldn't support such a finding.  A person has every right to possess and brandish a firearm in their own home with respect to an unknown and unidentified threat.

But, you know.....not EVERY person.  Cough cough.  I mean, why do "they" all have guns?  And if she would have just obeyed his lawful orders, she'd be alive today.  The real problem here is lack of respect for the police, who put their lives on the line for us every day.

I really, really hope that's not the narrative road this goes down.  But the roadmap is right there....

No way this same guy shoots a Highland Park resident under the same circumstances. Some cops are just human hair triggers and appear somewhat prone to shooting anything that moves when on alert mode in lower income areas. That’s strictly an opinion though.

I mean, yeah, no way he does that because Highland Park is outside his jurisdiction.

I get the point, just use a white neighborhood in FW for your example.

I don't think the new gun info gets him off, but it at least sheds light on why he shot and as to what his defense will be.

Well, if nothing else, it gives him the "I was in fear of my life" excuse. That's probably all he will need to keep a jury from convicting him

Come on, man. Why are you making this about race?

Yeah, but didn't you know that "life's too short to live in Dallas" is FW's credo. As somebody who has lived in Dallas since 1998 and spent nearly a decade working for the Star-Telegram the rivalry is very real at least from the west. Dallas DGAF who it does business with so long as it makes money. FW almost exclusively does business with FW (or non-Dallas) folks.

I've been in meetings all day but heard on the radio on way back to office about the new info about Atattiana holding a gun (WGAF) and also heard that while the initial call was a "welfare check" somehow it was relayed to the responding officers as a "breaking and entering." Again, does not excuse this chode's reaction in the slightest but it could explain why he didn't go to the open door, knock and announce himself as FWPD before sneaking around the back and shooting thru the window.

24 minutes ago, immortal13 said:

Perhaps you are unfamiliar with Fort Worth's recent history with non-white individuals.

And....just give your gut answer...if the cop saw a white person inside their home with a gun, would the cop have been a) more likely, or b) less likely, to have been so quick on the trigger finger?   Come on, man.  We're all adults here, and we all know how this shit works.  Policing in the US, particularly in jurisdictions like FW, is NOT race-neutral.  Far from it.

I was in a very small town last winter during deer season and was leaving the feed store when I saw the game warden who I recognized.  I stopped to talk to him and while we were talking a local cop pulled up too.

The contrast of the cop and the game warden was shocking.  The game warden was spending all day dealing with guys all carrying high powered rifles and the cop was writing school zone speeding tickets near the local school.

The warden's dress could have been mistaken for a utility company uniform save for the sidearm, and the police officer was head to toe tactical black, gloved-up, leg holstered, spare mags on his vest, and a carbine riding in a vertical mount visible in the car......in a town of a couple thousand people.

I know the point you are making is accurate, but back before local cops were tacticool, you’d be hard pressed to find a LEO on a bigger power trip than a raccoon ranger.  I’ve had as many bad experiences as I have had good, and I don’t break game laws.  Iirc, they are killed in line of duty much more often than your average street patrol LEO.

Huh.  I've had exactly one bad experience with a power-tripping game warden, and that was almost 30 years ago.  And I've had a LOT of interactions with them.  Even used to hunt with one regularly (man, that sumbitch could put away the beer).  Pretty redneck-y, but didn't strike me as power-tripping or itching to use a weapon.

But you're right for sure about how the shift to "tactical" damned everything has totally fucked up the way law enforcement thinks about themselves.  As an aside, I remember probably 7-8 years ago, one of the old partners at our firm used to get all kinds of outdoors and weapons-related catalogs here at the office (he's a huge gun guy, so is on all the lists).  He came into my office one day with a catalog opened to a page, plops it down and says "look at this shit."  It was goddamned "tactical underwear."  We laughed and shook our heads.  Now, 8 years later...go ahead and google it....you'll get over 39,000 results.  It's absurd.

I understand they serve a purpose. But why don’t you take your Aggy ring wearing ass down to the jetties and ask the dude with the half dozen 12” trout sticking out of a bucket some questions, and take you boat the fuck out of my wade?  80% of my interactions have been in the field, which is akin to being stopped for a roadblock.  Meet me at the ramp or at the gate ffs.

So do these...uh...make you appear to have more...you know...down there?   I can see how that would be a hot sell item for most LEO.

No, actually I'm quite aware and I'm sure you would know that if you read my posts. I'm just saying in this incident there is no reason to believe it was racially motivated, especially given the fact that he fired almost immediately after he saw someone in the window.

Could be.  That's definitely possible.  But tell us this: is the average cop a) more likely, or b) less likely, to pull the trigger in the exact same situation where the target is white instead of black?  Again....come on, man....we all know how it is.

I see what both of you are saying BUT ... we've just gone through a page or so discussing how segregated FW is. The cop knew damn sure where he was geographically, in the middle of a predominantly (if not completely) black neighborhood. Therefore there's a likely chance his "Spidey Sense" was fully activated since he was -- perhaps in his mind -- behind enemy lines. Just my two cents. Probably much different if he'd been checking out a house in Rivercrest.

Well, see, most citizens have a shred of decency, and DON'T see themselves as hero combat badasses patrolling Fallujah.  Instead, they take the responsibility of using a weapon seriously, and aren't eager to take someone else's life.  And they do basic things, like identify their target before firing.

In other words, we're better off trusting any random citizen with a firearm than we are with a "highly trained tactical specialist warrior cop."

No disagreement from me Brisket.  I've been handling weapons my entire life and never, ever want to use one against someone.

Too bad so many Heroes only pay lip service to that sentiment.

Yeah, I'm positive she didn't either.  That gun, if it was even hers, was purposfully "kicked" out of the closet for a photo op to provide some cover.

The FWPD already pretty much threw this guy under the bus.  It would be pretty stupid for them to do a cover up on the gun now.

They're playing it both ways.  Top brass are throwing him under the bus while his "brothers in arms" are doing whatever they can to help him build his defense.

No fucking way should the testimony of the 8 year old be admissible, let alone in the arrest warrant, unless that complete interrogation was recorded to be viewed by the jury.  I bet my month's salary that he was coached to say exactly what the cops wanted him to say to give cover for their murderous coworker.
