November 2, 20196 yr I can't believe they cast a Russian spy as Perry Mason Quote The first look at the new Perry Mason is out. Debuting in 2020 on HBO, the limited series is set in 1931 Los Angeles. While the rest of the country struggles through the Great Depression, the City of Angels has oil, the Olympic Games, talking pictures, evangelical fervor, and a child kidnapping gone very, very wrong. Based on characters created by author Erle Stanley Gardner, the series follows the origins of American fiction’s most legendary criminal defense lawyer. When the case of the decade breaks down his door, Mason’s relentless pursuit of the truth reveals a fractured city and just maybe, a pathway to redemption for himself. Perry Mason stars Matthew Rhys, John Lithgow, Tatiana Maslany, Chris Chalk, Juliet Rylance, Shea Whigham, Nate Corddry, Veronica Falcon, Andrew Howard, Jefferson Mays, Robert Patrick, Stephen Root, Gayle Rankin, Lili Taylor, and Justin Kirk
November 2, 20196 yr The original Perry Mason was much different from the Raymond Burr TV version. He was a shyster as crooked as the day was long. If this is going back to that version, it could be pretty good.
June 22, 20205 yr Starts tonight - reviews range from very good to meh. https://www.metacritic.com/tv/perry-mason-2020/critic-reviews
June 22, 20205 yr Premier was ok. Pretty dark. Beautiful production design and acting, as to be expected from hbo. Both sex scenes were funny.
June 22, 20205 yr Liked it, like the premise. The old Perry Mason movies from the 30's painted Mason as a dirty lawyer for good people. This is an interesting backstory.
June 22, 20205 yr I want to know more about Mason Dairy and the Mexican woman. That has to be an interesting tale.
June 23, 20205 yr The two reviews I read also indicated it was mediocre (maybe misguided?) but I went ahead and watched it and loved it. Most of the blurbs in the new previews talk about the look, and it is a beautiful production. I look forward to the rest of the season, and wonder how the transition will be made from private dick to attorney (if that’s even in the plans). Couldn’t be further from Burr’s Perry Mason character and TV show.
June 23, 20205 yr I enjoyed how it looked and the time period and location it's in. Rhys is a really good actor. It's summer and there's not much else new so definitely in.
June 23, 20205 yr If you're really interested in Perry Mason's background check out the old Warren William films from the 30's. He made 4 of them. The 50's TV version with Raymond Burr was a much different character. Edited June 23, 20205 yr by RPM
June 23, 20205 yr More on the Angels Flight funicular https://www.dailynews.com/2017/09/06/las-angels-flight-railway-you-have-questions-we-have-answers/

June 24, 20205 yr Ol’ Raymond Burr would have indeed loved the shot of Chubby, racing down the street, cock flapping in the cool late December night.
June 24, 20205 yr Never saw the tv version. Loved the first episode. I'm a sucker for Noir (does this count?) though, so I'll love most things set in this era. Very L.A. Confidential feel.

Very L.A. Confidential feel. You really should watch a few episodes. Raymond Burr was iconic and the scripts were well written. For a version closer to the HBO show, watch the Warren William Perry Mason films. He's already a defense lawyer and he's shady as they come. Just the guy you want to hire.
June 29, 20205 yr I thought the first episode was good. The 2nd was alright but got boring in the middle. I will give it one more.
June 29, 20205 yr This is an excellent series. True, it got a little strung out in Ep 2, but a lot of shit happened they had to explain. That takes a few pages to do. I'm really interested in the way they recast the roles (or did they? I haven't read the books) with Perry as a P.I., Paul Drake as a black cop, Della is not Perry's secretary and Spoiler apparently Perry was discharged for a homosexual encounter in the Army.
June 29, 20205 yr I watched the first and about 5 minutes of the second episode last night. I like it so far, I loved Rhys in The Americans so that might help.
June 29, 20205 yr Like most HBO shows, this one is shot very dark. The cinematography is beautiful, but unless you are watching in 4K the lighting is distracting.
June 29, 20205 yr Really diggin this show. Never saw one episode of the TV series, so no frame of reference. It's got a True Detective type vibe to it. Oh and Chubby Carmichael was packin. No Homo.
June 30, 20205 yr How much money does HBO have? That WWI flashback scene couldn't have been cheap. Also the girl from Orphan Black is finer than frog hair. I hope she "disrobes". Edited June 30, 20205 yr by billfromlaketravis
June 30, 20205 yr I haven't watched yet, but if you pair up 1/2 of The Americans with 1/2 of Orphan Black, this show should kill.
June 30, 20205 yr I haven't watched yet, but if you pair up 1/2 of The Americans with 14 characters from Orphan Black, this show should kill.FIFY
June 30, 20205 yr i'm picking up too much of a comedy vibe to compare it to true detective. doesn't have the suspense or creepiness that show has. was the restaurant really called ptomaine tommy's? was disappointed he got steamrolled so badly by the movie exec. seems like a seasoned detective would have had a better plan than that. if he wants to be our hero and protagonist he's going to have to show more street smarts than that.

Yeah, he has good instincts just needs to work on his follow through. Either a character flaw or something that will evolve. Through two episodes he doesn't seem to have very good people skills.
July 6, 20205 yr Pretty good detective show so far. Curious to see how high the corruption goes. Not sure what Sister Alice’s plan is after that last episode

July 6, 20205 yr this story line is boring. 7 several new cases over the season would have been much more interesting
July 6, 20205 yr I'm loving this. Something about the time frame, how it's shot, and Mason's character flaws are really great. It's similar to how I felt watching LA Confidential.

July 13, 20205 yr Mandy from Last Man Standing makes an appearance this episode If she lets the warlocks out, this series will earn a Striptease like warm place in my heart.
