Police did not offer any more details about the situation.

Reports on Twitter suggest that three men armed with knives were trying to take control of an outbound flight.

The incident is reportedly taking place on board flight UX1094 to Madrid.

Images showed crowds of people in the airport and armed police behind a cordon.

Schiphol Airport's official Twitter account tweeted: "The Royal Netherlands Marechaussee is currently investigating a situation on board of a plane at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. We keep you posted."

was just there a couple of weeks ago. used to be you would go through security to get to the individual gate, but they've recently redone the place, and they have a sensible security operation now, like most airports in the world.

One of Europe's busiest airports was placed on lock down this evening after a hijack button was pressed 'by mistake'.

Police swarmed to Schiphol Airport this evening after reports of a suspected hijacking during boarding of an Air Europa plane.

At least 27 passengers were on board when the hijacking alert was reportedly triggered.

Some flights at the airport were grounded, according to a passenger on a plane that had been due to take off this evening.

A so-called Grip 3 report was issued by special forces in the Netherlands, reports De Telegraaf.

This happens with 'an incident or serious event with major consequences for the population'.

At 7.43pm (UK time) Dutch special forces said that all the crew and passengers were safely off the aircraft.

"Twitter is the playground of fucking idiots."—@NoelGallagher

I just left there like 2 hours before that fiasco. I wasn't the one who hit the panic button.

I heard they cut power to the terminal, making it hot as an oven.  Which stunk for the undercover agents.

How do you go from "Pilot accidentally hit Panic Button" to "Three Guys with Knives"?

Seriously.
