January 19, 20241 yr Author Went to Slowbone yesterday for their Thursday special "Mexique" which was pretty damn good. Huge homemade flour tortillas stuffed with brisket, sausage and turkey, served with salsas, guac, cilantro/onions. I will be back next Thursday it was that excellent. One of them was big enough for a lunch but I knocked down 2. Is a great combo of tacos/bbq and one of the best lunches I've had in a while.Good to know. Hobbs is a great guy.
January 19, 20241 yr Author Had to go over to Funkytown last night for a work deal at The Drover. Hit up Panther City on my way back this afternoon. First time to go there since they took over the bar spot next door. Pretty solid though I don’t remember the brisket elotes being that salty-tasting the last time.

Let me add that the $10 ticket not only gets you in the door but also includes UNLIMITED adult beverages provided by Ben E Keith and various other local booze distributors. Most teams will be handing out samples throughout the day.
March 23, 20241 yr Author Had lunch with a legend today at Douglas.Shameless plug that our 10th Annual Big Texas BBQ is tomorrow at the Cotton Bowl Plaza. Doors open at 10am. Goes until 5. Lots of food and all-you-can-drink beverages by Ben E Keith. Can buy tickets at the door. Enter/park at Gate 5.
March 27, 20241 yr Author BTW, Douglas is closing at the end of this week. Doug Pickering is a friend of mine and is very friendly to the TDC and our BBQ event. I don't the concept was right for Snider Plaza as it was pretty expensive and that's more of a family dining scene there. Also, the parking is terrible. The BBQ was excellent, as was the burger (spendy, though). We went for my 50th birthday dinner a few years back with my in-laws and while I enjoyed it, I thought the steak could've been better (for the price). Felt it was too smoky.

Was in Fort Worth for work this week and I'm never in Fort Worth so was going to head to Goldee's, but a friend said the line would be discouraging to me and I had a tight timeline-- so it was either Ribbie's (from the people of Goldee's) but I didn't want wings/burgers so I ended up going to Panther City and it was fantastic. I've told a friend it is like the Derek Lively III of Ft. Worth BBQ. Overshadowed and not as popular or trendy as the generational talent that is Wembanyana (Goldee's) but an MVP in it's own right. The ribs were the crowd favorite and the brisket was amazing. The sausage was good, not special, and the pork belly was fantastic. And as for lines. There was like 6 people in front of me (11:30-11:45a) and it was super fast, but then around 12:15-12:30 there was a line out the door, but it disispated as fast as it happened and by 12:45 the line was back to 6 or 7 again. They are very efficient and fast with ordering. Edited January 31Jan 31 by Vegas64

April 1Apr 1 With the success of of Smoke n Ash in Arlington with Tex Ethiopian cue, I expect a fusion of every nationality soon.
April 4Apr 4 Author D Magazine put together a Top 28 BBQ places in DFW. Issue is out this week. Goldee's is #1 and Smokey Joe's is #2. D ranked the best 16 in order, then listed nine honorable mentions and then the three best takeout options (One90, Rathbun and ???).

April 12Apr 12 Author Ugh, the old Sonny Bryan’s on Lovers is becoming the second Ten 50 BBQ location.
April 12Apr 12 No lines. Brisket is very good. Ribs were above avg but not as good as Hutchins. Beans were below avg. Wanted green chile mac n cheese but didn’t have any. Wife had bierra tacos. Ok but consommé tasted like store bought beef broth with onions and cilantro added. She loved the apple Gorgonzola slaw.
May 2May 2 Had lunch at Vaqueros today. Whenever I go to these Texican BBQ joints I want to try that stuff, so I got tacos. One cochinita pibil and one birria. Both just ok. @Shaddie you were spot on about the consommé. It was bad. Had some of my buddies' brisket and sausage. Brisket was good and the sausage was (again) ok. My main issue is that every single thing on our table was lukewarm. The mac and cheese would have been pretty good had it been hot. Skip the beans. Collin County needs to step up its BBQ game. Won't be cheating on Hutchins again anytime soon. I've heard good things about Tender in Frisco but there's a Hutchins in Frisco too 😁 Edited May 2May 2 by threesheets

October 17Oct 17 Author Smokey Joe’s in sunny South Dallas is legit. Wife had to go down that way for work and bribed me with an ask if there were any top 50 bbq places I wanted to try (her treat). I’ve always heard Smokey Joe’s was good and was usually on Vaughn’s Top 50. This was some damn good bbq — and virtually no line to deal with.We ordered a 3-meat plate with brisket, cheese sausage and turkey with green beans and mac cheese. Found out when order was ready that they were actually out of turkey. They replaced with smoked chicken, threw in three Texas Twinkies that we didn’t order and then have us some buttermilk cake/pie.I strongly recommend it. Relatively inexpensive compared to the white boy bbq joint.

Added bonus since I’m in the Midlo area.
