emoji38.png it’s a 34mm watch. It is wild to see men’s watches trending smaller and women’s watches trending larger. My wife saw Kristen Kish wearing a 36mm two-tone DJ on Top Chef and now has her heart set on one. That’s bullshit! I want a 36mm two-tone DJ

I saw a woman wearing a 41MM stainless DJ.  She was maybe 5'2" and weighed between 100-110

Got a nice birthday present! 38mm Hamilton Khaki Field Mechanical (the gently modernized pre-2018 model with a date complication, as opposed to the newer no-date vintage one). Very thin and light at 9

That's pretty good looking.  My only complaint is the funky mini-Mercedes bulbousness at the end of the minutes hand.  I like the no cyclops and black backdrop on the date wheel.  Clean.  That minute hand, though.  A bit too penis-esque for me.

That's just the silhouette of the round lumed index behind it. The hand is a straight sword hand.

I bought this 10 years ago and have barely worn it. Put it on a week ago and have been wearing it since - it’s a solid watch. Too big and fat for the dress watch that it almost feels like it should be, but it’s nice for what it is.

Yeah, it's weirdly tall and bulbous, though at least it's got smoothly rounded "edges" so it doesn't really get caught in/on cuffs. I don't wear mine very often either, but occasionally it's the perfect watch for the occasion.

how does Citizen and Seiko stack up against each other? quality, reputation, etc. etc.? anyone can respond.

That's a little on the mid to high range for a Seiko (not Grand Seiko, which is priced like the higher end Swiss brands).

They are bulletproof for the most part.  This one is a '24, so it's "older" to those that care about these things.

so nothing wrong with this pick at all?  I think for HS he gets one like this and used or older new to me is great. after college maybe a used more high end (but not more than $1-3K).

Not a thing.  It's a big, shiny dive watch.  They make them with a rubber band as well or you can look at the NATO straps as well.  See which he prefers.

thank you. It's fun to love on a senior even when he's acting like a big man that don't need his momma(s). I spent the morning working on the book of wisdom I'm going to give him - my personal quotes/words of wisdom, my favorite third person quotes, and then some quotes from others that just make too much sense to leave out. dickbutt and muledick are trying to sneak their way in...

Logistics was the best tool little Yag's carried to school (per him).

  • Which dorm relative to most of your classes are you picking
  • Which meal plan
  • Which dorm is closest to these places to eat
  • Parking - where he goes to school it's a massive PITA.  Which pass to buy.  Which lots are the best
  • Which classes to take and what times
  • Setting up his emails accounts
  • ROTC/National Guard crap
  • Budgeting and his finances
  • How to make extra money.  He could do what I did, but there are other options.....

the longines is nice but that seems more like a college grad gift.

$575 doesn’t seem like an over spend for an 18 year old that likes watches.

That looks a lot like a Black Bay 58 for 1/9 the price.

Seiko more like Toyota - super high quality and reliability for its price point and traditional designs rooted in mechanical precision. Citizen is more like Mazda- very high value at its price point for the innovation, features and forward leaning design you get.

Not yet.

Btw @gsoda3 it’s also one of the most beautiful watches ever made at any price, so congrats.

It all started in a watchmaking factory. When I was exactly 16 years old, I worked part-time as a student in a small watchmaking factory in Münster. I strapped watches, carried boxes, and stocked shelves. The close contact with the watches had a lasting impact on me and sparked my passion for classic timepieces. I was so excited about the watches that I couldn’t stop talking about them to my friends and family.

But there was a problem: The watches I loved so much were unaffordable—even later, as a 21-year-old student, they remained out of my reach. This led me to a crucial question:

Why aren't there any watches with a beautiful, timeless design at an affordable price? I couldn’t shake this question!

That’s when the idea was born: I would develop my own minimalist watch, inspired by the simple Bauhaus design, with good quality at a fair price. A watch that’s accessible to everyone and made from high-quality materials. My family and friends were excited, but at the same time, they thought I was crazy—after all, there were already countless traditional watch brands.

Very comparable. Seiko does marketing and branding better, Citizen's best stuff is a bit more under-the-radar (and often JDM-only). Citizen is better about using sapphire crystals, while Seiko tends to slap hardlex on all of their mid-range offerings. But Seiko has more options for those with smaller wrists (like me).

Recently Seiko's been trying to move more upmarket. They want to be seen on par with Hamilton, Tissot, and the other entry-level Swiss brands. For the past few years Seiko has been discontinuing a lot of their models with the older 7s26 movements, and then re-releasing them with updated 4R36 movements at significantly higher prices. That's left Citizen, Orient, etc. to fill the affordable void.

Probably on the edge of affordable at any 1k, but I REALLY like these Lōci Pacific Coast Highway. They also have a quartz version for cheaper.2024_1110_00453400 (1).jpg

Scrolled through the last few pages of this thread about a month ago and discovered this.  Bought the quartz version for my son as an 18th birthday gift - his first "real" watch.  He loves it!  Thanks, HoustonHorn.

Has anyone built a watch from DIY Watch club? Seems like a neat idea.

@Tonesky man, really happy to hear that. I got to test them out and they really impressed me and I've had a chance to see a lot of microbrands.

Not sure how big your wrist is, but with a watch like this with no bezel and thin case, order it one or even two sizes smaller.

I have a 6.5" wrist and generally like biggish, 42mm watches.

I had a 42mm Flieger and it looked RIDICULOUSLY large on my wrist. I ended it selling it to a coworker.

I dig the little "old timey stoplight" embellishment at the tip of the second hand.

My wife gave me this 16 years ago for my 40th b"day ( the watch, not the cat;he's 15). It was my first automatic & recommended by someone OTOS. Just a shout out to how damn good this Hamilton Khaki field watch has been. Had the crown replaced last year but she's been trouble free & just a versatile watch that I wore daily for almost a decade.8f583ac24a97fdc80976e783382f3549.jpg

Looking to replace a watchband- any recommendations on an "oysterflex" type option that won't break the freaking bank (hence posting in this thread)?

Specifically- FKM material, curved ends (so there's no gap against the watch body), and a deployment clasp (or the ability to add one)

I know I can google this or dig around on reddit, but I have more trust for the reprobates hereabouts. 'Preciate it.

By "shows the mechanisms" do you mean an open-heart watch? Fair warning, they can look a bit tacky/garish. Orient has some good options.

Underrated brand, in my opinion

I have the Kanno diver.  It runs fast as to be expected from a cheap, unregulated movement.  But the fit and finish on the case, dial, and bracelet is really (really!) something for the price point.

Something of a belated heads-up - if any of you guys live near a Ross Dress for Less outlet, they've been selling Zodiac watches (including the Super Sea Wolf) at dirt-cheap prices over the last month. With Fossil Watch Company's recent bankruptcy they're trying to clear out old stock ASAP. You can get a new Zodiac Super Sea Wolf with a STP 1-11 movement for as low as $125. Might have to do a bit of hunting though.

Haha went to three because that is a deal I just could not pass up.  Saw lots of Fossil, but no Zodiac.

Little surprised these would sell out as for non-fanatics, they're kinda uggo and it's an obscure brand.

How belated is this?
