November 25, 20223 yr I had never seen Planes, Tranes, and Automobiles before, maybe just some clips. Based on this thread and your recommendations, I bought it on Apple TV last night for $10. I want my money back. The movie was not funny. I don't think there was a single joke. Steve Martin being annoyed for an hour and a half does not make a good movie. I had high hopes based on Hughes other hilarious movies. You have a hole in your soul. Nothing funny? You sound like Neal.

It’s not supposed to be a hilarious laugh-a-minute comedy. But the scene where they’re driving the wrong way between two semis and Steve Martin looks over to see John Candy in a devil suit just might be the funniest moment in cinematic history.
November 26, 20223 yr It's always surprising to me when people don't appreciate a classic. Not everyone sees things the same way I guess.
November 26, 20223 yr Watched it with our kids last night for the first time, 15 & 12. They loved it. Got them interested in other John Hughes films.

December 1, 20223 yr Has anyone watched all the deleted scenes? Haven't been able to yet. Sat down on Friday after feeding all the in-laws and family breakfast on Friday, sent them on their way, took my kids out to a couple of stores for BF. Sat down, exhausted at 8pm... and ended up in the hospital with 4yo little BGS. He's ok, but I just haven't had any time to sit down and enjoy. Hoping there's some good stuff in there. I've always wondered if there's a deleted pizza scene because of the line Steve Martin says when he finds his wallet empty "maybe, just maybe when you went in there for pizza last night you (cuts off)"

You know, everything is not an anecdote. You have to discriminate. You choose things that, that are funny or mildly amusing or interesting. You're a miracle. Your stories have none of that! They're not even amusing accidentally! "Honey, I'd like you to meet BlueGreySky. He's got some amusing anecdotes for ya. Oh, and here's a gun so you can blow your brains out. You'll thank me for it." I-I could tolerate any, any insurance seminar, for days. I could sit there and listen to them go on and on with a big smile on my face. They'd say, "How can ya stand it?" And I'd say, "'Cause I've read BlueGreySky's posts. I can take anything." You know what they'd say? They'd say, "I know what you mean. That guy on Surly." It's like going on a date with a Chatty Cathy doll. I expect you have a little string on your chest. You know, that I pull out and have to snap back. Except that I wouldn't pull it out and snap it back, you would. And by the way, you know, when, when you're telling these little stories, here's a good idea. Have a point. It makes it so much more interesting for the listener!

November 22, 20232 yr If you impound our car, I'm gonna be unable to get my friend here home in time for his Thanksgiving dinner!
November 22, 20232 yr I hope Elvis’ soul has been reborn in light of the season. May all your radios come in clear as a bell this Thanksgiving and may it be warmer, than I dunno…ONE

This year with our older one home from college for the first time. Another year, another brew, another screening of PTA, and for just a little while, all is right with the world. And again, "To the wives."

April 21, 20241 yr Wow, that speech would have added so much weight to that movie, it's a shame they didn't take the opportunity to use it. I get why they kept it lighter, but I think that gut punch of a story could have worked to pull at everyone's heart strings. It would be remembered totally differently if they did it.

April 22, 20241 yr They released a Bluray version a couple years back that had about an hour of deleted scenes added to it. If you want to watch through them all, you can see this video, however I didn't see the part where Candy told the whole story about his wife and traveling. There is a lot of time spent on the pizza guy and that motel room.

I think the speech is a little clunky and a little too obvious. I like that the movie in its final form leaves some of this open to the observer, for interpretation and reflection. Mentioning that he has no home and Marie died 8 years ago is more then enough to allow me to then understand Del's actions throughout the movie. I hate it when screenwriters underestimate the viewer and hit us over the head with dialog. I think the movie worked perfectly without the speech.
