Name 'em. Your untouchables, plus one classic that deserves to be reimagined.

Can't be done

  • Citizen Kane
  • Casablanca
  • Raging Bull

Reimagine

  • Rear Window

The Coen Brothers would absolutely nail this. As amazing as the original is, they were born for this.

Who the fuck is going to look half as fucking hot as Grace Kelly did in this movie without showing hardly any skin at all?

My votes for never remake:

Bridge over the River Kwai

The Shawshank Redemption

Unforgiven

And remake:

No Way Out

Can't be redone

Blazing Saddles

Honorary Mention:

Animal House - the numerous attempts show the original can't be topped.

Remake/Re-Imagined

Behind the Green Door: The Sequel.  Mitchell Brothers should have been shot for that.

Needs to/Should be remade:

Could be redone in a cool way with the right cast/re-write:

To Catch a Thief

No:

Taxi Driver

Citizen Kane

Revenge of the Nerds

Remake - Strangers on a Train.

I really dug the idea of a Jason and the Argonauts remake that someone mentioned upthread until I remembered the steaming pile of crap the Clash of the Titans remake was.

No:

Raiders of the Lost Ark

The Great Escape/Stalag 17

Mr. Roberts

Remake: All Quiet on the Western Front

we need to institute a rule that says "follow OP's rules/parameters". he asked for three films, not 30. narrow it down ya buncha jabronis. as for me:

don't remake:

Lonesome Dove

True Grit (it was already done right twice)

The Sting

Could be cool to remake:

A League of Their Own with Amy Schumer, Melissa McCarthy, and Leslie Jones

1. I was ready to kick you in the balls.

The Wizard Of Oz is the first movie that should be on the never re-make list.

It's been done (sorta). The Wiz. Horribad.

Maybe I should have made the topic "directors you would trust to remake a classic. " Christopher Nolan is a guy I'd trust with about any material. If he said he was tackling Stalag 17 I'd genuinely be excited. But it would be a radical remake. I can't see him infusing the movie with the type of humor that Billy Wilder so wonderfully & effortlessly wove through the film.

Damn, this is actually a really solid one I didn't consider.  It is very much a product of its times, and could really only deeply resonate with adults from that era.

Agreed.  That transition from black and white to color is another one of those things whose significance lessens over time.

But if they did, Pink Floyd should have done the soundtrack.

Anne Horniday, former movie critic for AAS and now the critic for the Washington Post always says......"never re-make the good movies .....only the bad ones should be remade".

Totally agree.

Can't:

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD

The Holy Grail

The Princess Bride

Should:

None

Can't:

The Great Escape
2001: A Space Odyssey
Once Upon a Time in America

Remake:

East of Eden

I hate that movies get remade. Hollywood should never remake:

The Princess Bride

Goodfellas

Braveheart

If a movie had to be redone, I’d probably stream a new version of Beverly Hills Cop

Imagine Spielberg taking a shot at this. Awesome possibilities.

There are probably a lot of bad book-to-film adaptations that could be remade, or redone as limited episode series.

Monty Python Holy Grail

Should remake:

Every Star Wars after Empire Strikes Back.

Raiders of the Lost Ark

this got me thinking about something.  old movies that were great usually get remade when they no longer hold up (in theory).  I’m aware there are plenty of exceptions.  I guess what I’m trying to say is that Raiders of the Lost Ark should hold up forever.  it’s not black and white, and has been remastered in HD, and it just seems like the characters should still entertain people 100 years from now just like they did 30 years ago and still do today.  so it, and other movies like it, should never, ever be remade.

but of course they will be.

Sweet Christ. Why? The original is werewolf perfection.

1- FTARH (duh)

2- Stripes

3- Caddyshack/ Animal House

Don't remake - too many to mention... many have already been mentioned here so I'll forego.

Remake:

  • War Games

Remake, but as a 10-episode Netfllix or Hulu series:

  • Thirteen Days
  • The Sum of All Fears

I get it.  I have seen it 10s if not hundreds of times.  I don't dislike it at all.  Just would be interested to see how it could be done these days.

If only we could somehow bring back Ms. Jenny Agutter in her former glory.

I'd like to see Flash Gordon get a redo, maybe a mashup between Raiders/Dark Knight.

And it's a damn good Crichton book, as was Timeline.
