Can't Be Remade

1. The Dark Knight

2. The Breakfast Club-  my kids and their cousins hate this movie, we're like, "WTF is wrong with them?"  Times changed...

3. Ferris Bueller's Day Off. No way possible in the hyper-connected world between teacher/ parent now.

Should:

Risky Business

I'd like to remake the porn I made with your mom.

It was remade.    Debbie Does Dallas Again

IMHO there are a lot of older classic movies that just don't age well, but I understand the nostalgia.   But many of those films would be incredible with modern film making as long as the new director didn't lose his shit.

Therefore I'll restrict myself to only marginal 80's movies that could have been better with budget/production:

Weird Science

Highlander - it's aged really poorly

Last Star Fighter

Ok to re-imagine and modernize:
Strange Days

and remake Predator while you're at it

Don't EVER remake:

Ghostbusters

Casino Royale

Total Recall

Definitely DO remake:

The Godfather

Don't:

Viva Las Vegas

Dr. Zhivago

The Best Year of Our Lives

Might be interesting to try again:

Sullivan's Travels

Don't remake:

Boogie Nights

Dazed and Confused

The Big Lebowski

Should be remade:

Slacker, just to show how horrible Austin and West Campus have become. Scene transitions involve people handing off their e-scooters

Disagree on Last Starfighter, that's a great little movie much like Dragonslayer.

I have some bad news for you...

My do not remake...that was remade was The Four Feathers 1939/2002  - they did not get it right.

I agree it was a great little movie, greatly held down by the special effects.  It's basically Men in Black Away Game Edition.

Just look at 2001 Space Odyssey made in 64' vs Last Starfighter made in what 85'   All I'm saying is great special effects could give that B+ film a new life.

PS I want Tarantino to re make Repo Man...   it'd be fantastic

Can’t: Reefer Madness

Stay off the weeeeeeed

Don't EVER remake:

Ghostbusters
Casino Royale
Total Recall

Definitely DO remake:
The Godfather

I’d add Bad News Bears and Point Break to the don’t remake.
Do remake Godfather 2.

I can't even fathom which actors would be in a Godfather I or II remake.

cant be redone:

Braveheart

Saving Private Ryan

El Camino

Should be redone:

DIamonds are Forever

Live and Let Die

Don't remake  (of those not listed):

Dirty Dozen

Dirty Dancing

American Graffiti

Remake:

Grapes of Wrath.

Serious methheadedness going on in here thinking The Godfather 1/2 be touched.  Two of the finest films ever created.

C'mon, man, you don't think Melissa McCarthy could do a better job as Don Corleone than Brando?

Melissa McCarthy deserves the Luca Brasi treatment

You shut your whore mouth!

Giant
Blazing Saddles
Stalag 17

Remake Duel ( replace the Rambler with a Tesla )

Can't:
Blazing Saddles; the Godfather; and, The Graduate
Re-imagined:
Jeremiah Johnson

I would agree with this except you can’t top Jeremiah Johnson. They would CGI the hell out of it with animated bears and snowy mountains like Lord of the Rings
There are probably a lot of bad book-to-film adaptations that could be remade, or redone as limited episode series.

Agreed those are some of the best candidates.

Congo is a good call

I’ll nominate:

The Bonfire of the Vanities

Gulliver’s Travels (the Ted Danson TV miniseries was decent, the movie was awful)

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

I agree, the original is a classic.  But they really downplayed a lot of the truly horrible stuff about that era.  I would just like to see a remake that wasn't through such a filtered lens.  We are seeing movies now with more gritty graphics that might have played closer to realism than the Hollywood version.    WWI and WW2 movies for instance.  The latest Midway is a good example.    I'd just like to see the same treatment given to the topic of The Depression, the dust bowl and the California migration.

Eh, "THERMAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM HOSE!!! " lacks the punch of "RADIATOR HOSE!!!"

Let's compromise and CGI Tom Hardy into the original for Robert Redford.

I agree most of the worst cases were hidden and understand the visual effects would be greater, but this is fucking Steinbeck. It's in the editing that tells the story.

I am quite confident Hollywood is currently planning on an all female Godfather remake.

Can't remake:

The Blues Brothers

The Fish that Saved Pittsburgh

Should remake:

Cannonball Run

Always thought that was an odd role for Tom Hanks.

Never:

Vertigo

North by Northwest

The Godfather 2 (perfect movie)

Remake:

The recent version of The Alamo. Do the Ron Howard “R” rated version. I like John Hancock and most of his movies but he really blew it on this one, IMHO. As corny as John Wayne’s film was, at least it had emotion and made you feel for the heroes.

Yeah, but the most recent version of The Alamo at least paid some semblance of attention to historical accuracy.

The Last Picture Show?  Leave or remake?

Leave it.

Also, am I in the minority in thinking that Godfather is superior to Godfather II?  I didn't think that was a particularly hot take but maybe not.

WTF is wrong with you? Leave it.

Now one that I just realized needs to be remade is White Christmas. The story is gold, but you gotta change up the set list.
