Buyouts like this $63 mil for Norvell and $45 mil for venables is going to have boosters at each others throats when they find out they spent a jillion bucks on fucking Jethro Bodine.  I’d expect they start putting in some basic performance reqs or else coaches will get a big deal and spend their time playing angry birds.

Was reading yesterday that a lot of schools would rather dump money in the portal and keep their overpriced coach. Cheaper and you can get better.  Problem is, it's damn near every school with a lameduck head coach doing this. FSU, UF, USC, ou etc will be fighting for the best in the portal.

It's going to be crazier than in years past and honestly a terrible spot for teams to be in. You're all in on the portal, and HS recruiting becomes secondary.  So every year your goal is to find gold in the portal.  Feast or famine.

Bottom line, schools pay way too much for coach, firing would mean 40mil, but buying the portal is 20-30 mil? Keep the idiot coach, buy the players.

The accounting is interesting. You’d like to get the coach buyout off the ledgers quickly, but athletic departments typically spend at least what’s coming in, so it’s nice if a big booster foots the bill. That is a lot more plausible in 1997 (very low seven figure buyout) than 2024 (mid eight figure buyout).

But, AD revenue and funds can be used on the buyout. They can’t (yet, but coming soon) be used on NIL. University funds can be used to fill AD shortfalls (although a bad look, a bad look that can be obfuscated somewhat).

Bottom line is- any bad coach will be bought out. The buyout will be paid by a combination of AD revenue, booster donations and university funds. The constraint is how much shit the athletic director wants to take from the latter two sources.

Honestly, the calculated and laborious ascension to present day is mind blowing.

Hey, they have a senior QB this season...

I still don't understand how a guy at FSU can watch DJU play at Clemson, then watch him at OreState, and think "Hell, yeah, here's a guy we can win with!"

Because Norvell thinks the portal is like NFL free agency, and everyone thinks they can fix the issues. The fact that he relied so heavily on the portal just goes to show how dumb they can be, while they're making millions of dollars. It's quite interesting to watch.

Norvell team imploded and it’s only getting worse.  Dig a hole.

wanting to shitcan him is free. actually shitcanning him would cost a cool $63 million.

Still wouldnt be the highest buyout ever.

DJ was the backup plan. They went hard after Cam Ward, but by the time he "entered" the draft, then pulled out of the draft and committed to Miami, there weren't a lot of great QB portal options left if I remember correctly.
