Got a tentative (nothing in academia is offical until it is signed off by the BOR) offer for a faculty position at the University of Toledo.

Dont know much about Ohio in general or Toledo specifically (besides its still a better location than me being in SD).

Won't be moving till this summer, so we have time to figure shit out.

Lets say that knowing Klinger from MASH and the Toledo Mud Hens are about the extent of my Toledo knowledge.

Any and all help/info/"your fucked buddy" comments are welcome

Klinger pretty much covered it for me. Will you begin wearing dresses now?

They have a nice zoo and there's waffle houses there. An hour to Detroit or Cedar Point. Not sure if that's good or bad, I'll leave that up to you.

argument 1: this area/city is awesome. you can get a 4000 sq ft house for $200k

argument 2. this area/city is a shithole. you can get a 4000 sq ft house for $200k (hint: no one wants to live here.)

supply, meet demand.

This.  Sell your house here and buy 3 there.

Live in Perrysburg and commute in to work.

The university is right in the middle of the ghetto.  See above.

You're relatively close to the Detroit airport and that's a plus. DTW has lotsa flights.

TU's academics are surprisingly not bad.

Toledo metro parks are surprisingly good.

If this is a 2 year stint that will further your career, grit your teeth and do it.  If not, seriously, what are you thinking?

They love opioids and heroin there so get ready to party your ass off.

He said Toledo not the University of Dayton.

Legal weed in Michigan is a short drive as is Canada.

Educate yourself about Put-In-Bay, and the ferry over, as that will be your summer party scene.

Rent don't buy until you get a firm grasp on the situation.

Under 1.5 hours to Detroit, 2ish hours to both Cleveland and Columbus, 4 hours to Chicago.  Ann Arbor is about an hour and East Lansing around 2 hours.

If you're into the great outdoors, Northern Michigan is the summer is fantasic.

My advice for moving to Toledo is don't.

Shit Ohio vs a state without any income tax?

17%+ raise, way better retirement, better students, and  teach less classes in a place that has a cost of living significantly less than SD.

Ill pay some state income tax to offset the abject lack of population density, diversity, and acceptable affordable housing.

Anyone know about the Ottawa Hills neighborhood? I know they have really good schools.

I used to live in Austin. I moved back to Columbus Ohio. I regret it all the time. And Columbus is by far by the best big city in Ohio.

Youre moving to Toledo. Detroit is "de toilet" and since there is nothing left for Detroiters to destroy, theyve moved to Toledo and have begun destroying that city. So Toledo is referred to as "the septic tank".

Scores and diversity level indicate there is a high probably that professors, and other academians, from both of the universities populate that area.

Unfortunately in academia you are essentially waiting for people to die or retire for positions to open up. I don't get to have a ton of choices location wise.  The 4 basic fits for me of the jobs open this year were Ohio, Virginia, NYC and Mississippi.

The Virginia school is broke. Mississippi is Mississippi, NYC wont be able to pay what I would need to break even and Ohio came with an offer significantly better than I expected. So then stay in South Dakota or accept Toledo.

All of Mississippi is a bigger shithole than Toledo.

Mississippi housing options vs what they can actually pay is a major disconnect.

You are seeing lots of alumni buying up “vacation “ property around the football schools in the south which is pushing the prices in the upper ends of the housing market.

Enjoyed the Mississippi schools I’ve visited, but smaller towns and the wife had her reservations.

Gulf Shores isn't too far away from Mississippi and you can get from Biloxi/Gulfport to New Orleans in an hour and to Houston in six.

Look on the bright side.

Bwahahaha! I'm kidding there isn't one, it's Ohio.

 Which Virginia school?

Most likely that's a sentence that has never been formed.

I would say Liberty as a joke, but everyone knows that those weirdos are loaded.

Honestly, all of our schools have money bleeding out of their whatever. If there's one that's broke they must be completely inept.

I’m not going to shit on a potential place of employment because academia is a small world and very simply if Toledo doesn’t work out I got to go somewhere.

That being said, I’m not sure I would be happier in VA.

Have you looked in to The University of Phoenix? Scottsdale is really nice. I'm no teacher but I know nice weather, pretty women and decent enough night life. I'd be looking there if was a certified academic.

For some reason, I know a shit ton of grads from Mississippi unis and colleges, the way they talk about their small college towns is special. The same for supporting those schools. Tight groups

as long as you’re white

$9000.00

Completely serious question.  Why isn't there a program to get homeless into these houses.

9000.00 doesn't even cover the permits and SDC fees for "affordable housing" on the west coast?

There are a shit lode of $20K small houses that look to be in decent shape.

OP needs to move to Toledo, just phone in his job (because who's going to move there to replace him,) and spend all his $ on Viagra and beer at a bar across from the depot picking up women who just took off their ring. OF COURSE they're square-bodied and shovel-faced, what do you expect after pumping out four hungry children and a crop in the field.

Pop the Viagra and slam the beers, at some point OP will say "I'm no quitter but I finally quit livin' on dreams. I'm hungry for laughter and here ever after I'm after what-ever the other life brings."

"Bitter divorcees here to forget about her 3 kids back at the double wide."

VA has a mix of good and bad from a personal and professional perspective that isn’t worth going into on here. COL vs what they can pay isn’t enough to offset the other shit.

As much as I like many areas in VA, there are enough red flags that I’m not 100% sure  it would be a better fit.

I’ve always been pro burning couches, but then again I’m only a first generation college graduate the sprung up from poor white trash. It’s in my DNA man...

I'm the first to bitch about Virginia's shortcomings, I'm just saying I support above ground nuclear testing in Ohio.
