  • kd lang kills "Hallelujah".  Any version.  They're all stellar.  I don't really get the Buckley/Wainwright versions.  I mean, Rufus changed the word from "ya" to "you", which is stupid. Example 1

OK, this is a bit of a cheat because it's Sara's song, but holy shit Rufus!

I've listened to this song damned near every day since I accidentally saw it on PBS a few weeks ago.  Never been a huge Rufus fan, but jesus christ this is spectacular.

It's quite literally one of the greatest pop vocal performances I've ever heard.  I'd put it up there with kd lang at the Olympics, among others.  Just astonishing.

VH was good for a cover usually per album.

Linda is a total smoke show but I’ve always liked this version.

Pearl jam does a cover of “it’s ok” during their shows sometimes. PJ are capitalists so they make you go to youtube to watch it.

This is probably old news for you music buffs and guys that really follow live performances, but I heard a version of Born in the USA by Bruce tonight on Sirius that blew me away.

Obviously the original is not the flag waving nationalistic song that some dipshits pretend it to be, but this was the first time I'd ever heard it performed in a way that matches the tone of the lyrics.

The version I heard was from a live performance from 1996 in Belfast. I couldn't find that exact version on the Googles, but this one is close enough.

Neither of these have been posted. First two I thought of.

Sweet Jane in particular. Love this version.

Doing anything better than prince is saying something but Snead kills that song and owns the best version for sure.

I think the main thing that she did was realize that it could be a hit. It was part of a throwaway side-project of Prince's that I'm not sure he ever expected to gain traction.

Digging shit up like that and reimagining it takes talent.

Cornell's version is also great.

Cornell's version was posted twice before which prompted me to post Sinead's. Don't blame you because I wouldn't go through 10 pages to check.

Except I did. I really need a social life.

Nah, you just wanted to be first. That’s admirable.

Not even remotely approaching the greatness of the original, but I'd give it a B+ or so.

Dang.

Going to bring this one front and center again.  Holy smokes, that was a hauntingly beautiful version of Born in the USA.  The guitar work alone is worth your time.  I got chills when he sang, "They're still there; he's all gone," and held "gone" for 10 seconds.

That was fucking outstanding, love the OG but this might be a better rendition.

Yup.  I'll be honest, I'm not a huge fan of the E Street Band.  I love Bruce's writing, but the chimy keyboards and Max Weinberg's drumming and the general arrangements wear on me.  Whenever I hear Bruce solo I am gobsmacked, he is a world class lyricist.

Total dog shit.

But this vignette about the humans who wrote the song is pretty cool.

Yeah, I've seen the Beato clip.

It's a great song... probably in my top-5 for the decade.

It's a damn good song, but not even the best on that album

ETA: I really love that album. What a banger.

For the longest time I thought of Robert DeLeo as just the dorky bass player whose brother was the hypercool guitarist.  Then I saw that Beato video -- holy shit, that guy is super talented.

Both are super talented. Dean is one of the most inventive guys when it comes to chords, all their shit is way more complex that it seems at first blush. Eric Kretz is a phenomenal drummer as well.

I honestly think STP is probably the most underrated band of all time. They obviously had great success, but I don't think they ever got their due on musicianship.

For me I just didn't pay much attention because it felt like they were jumping on the bandwagon, releasing "Core" a year after "Nevermind" and "Ten".  I mean, I could hear the hooks but the grunge saturation was ramping up at an incredible pace.  I was skeptical of just about everyone.

Yeah, I mean I totally get it. And I'm sure the label dressed them for Core, 100%. Thankfully they were already back into their own thing by Purple, which is probably a top twenty album for me.

The thing that sucked for them is that a lot of Core was actually written before Nevermind and Ten hit, back in 1989. One of the best songs off of Purple, Lounge Fly, actually came from that demo as well. But they got lumped in that whole thing when they clearly were pretty different. To be honest, the whole grunge moniker was so insane to start with because all those bands sounded super different. Pearl Jam was basically Led Zeppelin with socially conscious lyrics.

I don't disagree with much of what you've said regarding sonics, but the whole MTV look and feel of grunge thing was hard to avoid.  Oh look, ANOTHER band in ratty flannel shirts and ripped jeans!  Haven't seen that in a minute.

That said, I always thought Dean DeLeo seemed to come out of the womb as a rock star, not unlike Joe Perry.

#494

Admittedly, that's pretty cringey.

But a lot less cringey than the previous decade of spandex, hairspray, and eye liner.  If that's 1990, you gotta at least give them props for not looking like Warrant.

I'm partial to this one.

I'm partial to the original which is one of the greatest songs of all-time but I understand that threads tend to devolve from their initial purpose on this board.
