There's also a very small chance it was taken down by a donkey launched from a trebuchet.

A donkey paid for by the Obama administration.

Iranians sure did seem sheepish the past few days.  Shooting down a plan full of civilians explains that...

Just read a tweet that US ‘officials’ are confident it was shot down as satellites picked up the AD radar and 2 launches.  So yeah if that’s true Assman was right, and the expected SA-15 has a fragmentation warhead (vs continuous rod) that’s poke a bunch of holes as seen in the pics.

That could probably do it. How audible would something like that be from distance?

This is a total guess, but I do have a graduate degree from UT with an emphasis in acoustics . . . "not very".

To be fair, there is no way I get on that plane an hour after the strikes.

To be fair, that plane probably started boarding just a few minutes after the strikes, and who knows if anyone knew anything?  And what would be the calculus -- "do I take a chance on this flight or take a chance staying in this shithole with WW3 breaking out?"

We shot down an Iranian aircraft in 1988. Russia shot down the Malaysian aircraft over Ukraine in 2014. And now Iran shoots down a Ukranian aircraft.

No reprisals or punishments happened after the first 2. Doubtful anything will come of this.

Ukrainian airliner was shot down by Iran with Russian-made surface-to-air missiles

From CNN's Barbara Starr

The Ukrainian plane that crashed Wednesday was shot down by two Russian-made surface to air missiles (SA-15), according to a US official familiar with the intelligence.

The US saw Iranian radar signals lock onto the jetliner, before it was shot down.

The morning after the incident, US analysts discovered the data but took another day to verify.

Welp, that's that.

Soleimani's job for 2 decades was organizing, training, funding, plotting and buying weapons for the many brutal militias and terrorist proxies under his command that killed a hell of a lot of innocent people.   All over the world.  Many aren't aware, but Hezbollah has even been deep in organized crime in South America for 2 decades, and not just in Venezuela.

And we invaded Iraq on false premises creating a war and aftermath which has killed tens of thousands, maybe 100s of thousands of people. Be careful pointing fingers, we may end up being the worst of the lot.

Trump's handlers seem to have talked some sanity into the delusional shitbag.

He’ll apologize for the plane getting in the way of the missile.

Just found this.

https://www.nytimes.com/1996/12/09/world/ex-soviet-pilot-still-insists-kal-007-was-spying.html

A confirmed Communist who lives in the Caucasus region, Colonel Osipovich insists that the jetliner was on a spy mission and that there were no civilian passengers aboard. He even considers himself fortunate to have achieved a measure of celebrity by having destroyed Flight 007.

One of his few complaints is that the Soviet authorities paid him a smaller bonus for shooting down the plane than he had hoped: 200 rubles minus a small fee for postage.

The ground-based officer who first detected the plane on his radar scope received a 400-ruble bonus, he complained.

''Those who did not take part in this operation received double their monthly pay,'' he said. ''At that time, monthly pay was 230 rubles. So I expected to be paid at least 400 rubles.''

The circle of life requires that someone in Malaysia shoot down an American aircraft.

Note to self, do not board any US plane whose flight path goes over Malay airspace.

I know I saw this back in 1990 or 1991.  Not sure where.

3 days of official state sanctioned mourning for a terrorist scumbag but let's see if the Iranian government will admit to the truth or continue their brazen lying about the cause. What an embarrassing display. 60 people die in a stampede at the funeral of the scumbag and now they shoot down a passenger jet. The value the Islamic government has for ordinary lives is nil.

Unfortunately, bold face lying is very Persian and Islam gives cover and sanction to lies. Sick.

Yeah, it's almost like they're putting kids in cages on the border.

They killed over 1,000 people who were protesting and refused to give the bodies back to the families for burial. That is worse than the kiddie cages. Not surprising you are trying to draw a parallel between us and the Islamic regime when it is not warranted at all.

No, I was just riffing on your condemnation of a government not valuing lives of ordinary people.  You know, irony.  And cloaky.

somebody posted some photos upthread of some shrapnel holes.  Yep

And they looked external (as in shrapnel punching into the fuselage/wings, instead of exploding outward).

The fact that the Iranian government was so quick to say they wouldn't be sharing the blackbox with Boeing/etc. was a sign as well.

I would have figured years of posting on this site would have taught you not to attempt to explain irony to the functionally retarded.

I wasn't expecting to have to explain it.  My bad.
