August 26, 20214 yr 08.25.2021 | Men's Tennis Spizzirri advances to second round of U.S. Open Qualifying Men’s Tennis sophomore Eliot Spizzirri rallied for an impressive three-set win over Alejandro Tabilo of Chile on Wednesday. New York – Men's Tennis sophomore Eliot Spizzirri advanced to the second round of U.S. Open Qualifying by rallying for an impressive, 5-7, 7-6 (0), 6-3 win over Alejandro Tabilo of Chile on Wednesday. Tabilo is currently No. 163 in the ATP rankings. The win moves Spizzirri on to face Henri Laaksonen of Switzerland, who is No. 130 in the ATP rankings and seeded No. 14 in the qualifying rounds. In the opening set, Tabilo served first and each player held in their first service game. Spizzirri forced Tabilo to deuce in the third game, but Tabilo held on and then broke and held again for a 4-1 lead. Spizzirri got that break back two games later and used it as part of a 3-0 run to even the set at 4-4. Three of the last four games then went to deuce, including the next two in which both players held. Tabilo also held in the following game for a 6-5 lead and then picked up the deciding break in deuce after a return attempt by Spizzirri came up just short of clearing the tape on set point. The second set stayed on serve starting with Tabilo up to a 3-2 lead for him that he extended to a 4-2 with a break. However, Spizzirri broke right back and then held to even it at 4-4 and each player picked up a hold on their next two serves to send it to a tiebreaker. In the breaker, it was all Spizzirri as he picked up a mini-break on the first point and never looked back for a 7-0 sweep of the frame. In the third, Spizzirri served first and the players held up to a 4-3 lead for Spizzirri. With a 3-2 lead, Spizzirri forced deuce against Tabilo's serve and had a break point with an ad there, but Tabilo recovered to salvage the hold. However, Spizzirri wouldn't be denied on his next break opportunity as he claimed a 5-3 edge leading him serving for the match. Despite falling behind 0-30 in the game, Spizzirri stormed back for four straight points and ripped a winner down the line after a strong serve to seal it on match point. Just like his first match, Spizzirri's next contest against Laaksonen on Thursday will be the last of five on his assigned court with the first slated to begin at 11 a.m. ET/10 a.m. CT on Court 13.
