January 5Jan 5 I want to go on an old-book-finding raid of Mexico City within the next two months. Keep it simple-- Zócalo area, UNAM, Estudios Azteca (I geek out trying to map the Old West Village that appeared in tons of 60s and 70s films. Probably 99% no trace left, but all I need is to see a couple of photos in their museum.) I prefer buses, cash, and taxis. Best food I ever ate there was at taxi driver cafes. Also never got sick at street stands, if that's a worry. Gotta wind down some of my meds. I feel up to explaining what 8 or 9 are for, but to hell with 14. All y'all who haven't been to Frida's Casa Azul, git ye there. I never went to the other house, the double one connected with a little walkway. Guess that's my assignment.

Far enough away from the city center, but still quick access to great restaurants and street food. Not too far to walk to a Metro station as well. Use the Metro during the day for getting around and switch to Uber after sundown. I’ll keep my opinion on Pujol to myself…
January 17Jan 17 Got in yesterday morning. Staying in the city center, but we wandered pretty far out yesterday. This place is great so far. Not at all what I expected! Well, other than my Spanish not being nearly as good as I thought. Turns out you can’t just drop English words in randomly down here like at home

If you're hiring a Uber/lyft/DiDi/taxi for travel at night they will almost assuredly drive with the windows down so it might be nice to have one.
January 17Jan 17 Pujol is NOT the experience you want after sundown. At least it wasn’t two years ago.Hook’em!!!

January 19Jan 19 17 hours ago, SquishMitten said: Light jacket is perfectly fine. Thanks, didn’t even need a jacket last night. Short sleeve shirt was fine. Centro was crazy busy last night. Free concert in the Zocalo for an apparently big deal old school Argentinian singer Fito Paez. Kept my head on a swivel. Uber from airport at 6 pm from Gate 7 at terminal 1. Cost was an incredible $10. It took the guy close to an hour because of the traffic. He kept going off script from his route to get around the traffic to Centro. The app has tip amounts set at 25 cents, 50 cents and 75 cents (in pesos). The most they allow to custom tip in the app is $7.50. A little about the immigration process at the airport only because it was a little confusing to me since I was expecting to deal with an immigration agent. There are 3 lines. Americans use the left lane as well as some other countries. You make it to a kiosk where you scan your passport and look at a screen which takes a picture to compare. It spits out a piece of paper that includes information about when you got here and when you have to leave by (180 days). You must keep the paper to present when leaving the country. Then these clear doors open and you just walk thru and are on your way. I was confused because some people the doors wouldn’t open for them and they had to get in line for an agent. We didn’t have our passports stamped, just have this little piece of paper. First 3 nights in the Centro, then we will decide where for rest of the stay, probably La Condesa or Roma Norte like everybody else.
January 19Jan 19 I wasn’t all that impressed with Roma Norte. It has a distinctly Americanized feel to it.

Roma and a few other neighborhoods became super Americanized due to remote work. There was a whole thing about how most of the Spanish you hear in some of the neighborhoods is just the workers, bc the residents are all ex-pats working remotely

March 3Mar 3 Wife and I have a 48 hour layover in CDMX in September on the way to Barcelona. Looking at hotels in Roma and Condesa. I saw the rec for La Valise. Any others that we should check out? Also looking for good places to eat. We'll do the street food thing but want to do one nice dinner. Has Pujol dropped off in quality? From the reviews we've seen, it sounds like it might have. Where else to go for that meal? Quintonil? Somewhere else?

Though, I would only choose it over Pujol if Pujol is full. Edited March 3Mar 3 by SimonBolivar

La Valise is great, but you could also take a look at Brick and Casa Izeba, both in the same area. I haven't been to Pujol or Quintonil in a few years, but my favorite spot for awhile has been Maximo. Planning to return next month.
June 29Jun 29 Went down there this past week to visit the daughter before her and her family move back to Cancun. Great visit with some awesome food and sightseeing the Zocalo, halls of Montezuma, and a sunrise over the pyramids. IMG_3100.m4v Edited June 29Jun 29 by BillyGoatHill
October 15Oct 15 Thread bump: Headed in November to celebrate my mom's 75th. My 11 year old son will be in tow, but he is cultured and well-behaved as long as they have some relatively kid friendly options. Seeking restaurant recs: Dinner - Maximo (booked), so need 2 more spots Lunch - Mi Compa Chava (booked), so need 2 more spots. Sunday brunch - Is that a thing there? Appreciate the recs in advance... hook 'em!🤘
October 16Oct 16 @Hollywood if you’re going to the pyramids, there are a couple of cool restaurants in the caves that would be entertaining for the family. Quite busy on Sundays. But it’s a haul from where you are staying.
October 17Oct 17 Author My wife told me that they're allowing people on the pyramids again, but she lies a lot.

I don’t see the ban ever changing. A thousand people going up a pyramid every day can’t be good for it.

I’d allow it but no Americans or Chinese or Russians. They’re too stupid and selfish and fuck shit up

From my post above in June the Sun pyramid was closed, but you were allowed to could climb (walk) up the first section of the moon/Luna pyramid plus the smaller ones and the city/living areas.
