hey do you guys think masks work?

For the elite vaccinated class (which is basically everyone willing at this point on this side of the big water), they are largely hygiene theatre.

Speaking of cancer, everybody remember about 10+ years ago---then Governor Rick Perry wanted to mandate that all Texas females over the age of (I think it was 14) receive the HPV vaccination in order to continue on in public school?  A lot of y'all didn't seem to have an issue with that because he was "your guy."

I’ve switched sides of the aisle since then. One thing that all surly members share in common though, regardless of political affiliation though is:

Why is it so difficult for some of you to understand that there are some people hesitant to give their children a vaccine that is one year away from the first human trials and only six months from the first child trials? Everyone my son interacts with on a daily basis is either wearing a mask like him, outside, or already vaccinated. Who is he potentially spreading this to? For whatever reason, kids don’t seem to spread this particular disease that much and it hardly impacts them if they do get it. And if he has already gotten it then he has natural immunity.

And for the record I have not said we won’t get it for him. So fuck off.

Kind of in the same boat as you. We all had it (Covid) in January. Caught it from our 4 year old. Wife and I got Pfizer’d. Will we get him a shot immediately when it gets approved? Why would we need to? He’s got antibodies for now. Eventually will we get him the shot? Sure.

Skimming through the comments the sentiment seems to be "haha take that rich white ppl, follow the rules". So bizarre. The political horseshow has turned them into puritanical social conservatives.

Twitter takes no cut and is the only big social to allow porn. I'm not saying Onlyfans and Chaturbate are about to die, but they got stiff new competition.

Although official attendance data have not yet been released, a survey of L.A. Unified parents indicated that about 17% of high school students would come back to campus.

Despite detailed planning, the majority of secondary school students in California’s largest districts will end their year much like it began — fully online, according to state data. For many, it will mean 17 or 18 months away from classrooms.

The entire handling of California’s public school system, from the control the teacher unions have to the politicians using kids as leverage, is fucked up.

i don’t know what was going on with the numbers around Amherst in February but it looks like they were kicked out for going to a big off campus party during a mandatory lockdown.

have a buddy that was a bit of a recluse before covid, but has become incredibly reclusive since covid...40, single, in good health...he's a scientist, super smart dude, i would assume fully vaccinated, but basically isn't showing any signs of re-joining society. our shared friends are taking a vacation next fall in mexico and invited him and he got really mean in his response ("i'm surprised you guys think now is the time to be vacationing, i'm disappointed y'all are choosing to act foolishly, etc.")

i think there is a subset of people that weren't real interested in participating in society prior to covid and now have the perfect crutch to explain their refusal to participate now...i'd imagine the number of people like this is very large, and i expect it'll have some pretty profound impacts on society.

Did you tell him the vacation isn’t now but in 5 months?

It Sounds like my father in law. Saw him and MIL yesterday for the first time since august. They won’t even come to town 40 mi away to hang out outdoors. He needs eye surgery badly so hopefully his ass will get vaccinated and to get it done soon. No idea how some of these introverts do it for such a sustained period of time. I would fucking nuts if I don’t hear any part of society. Last April/may our highlight of the day was to drive around and see other cars moving around.

i have another theory regarding family members that don't like other family members and are using covid as a crutch to not have to visit.

do you want to hear about it?

Well actually, he almost certainly didn't have polio. There's a 99% chance he had Guillain-Barré Syndrome. It all came to light in 2003 with an exhaustive study of his symptoms. The 1926 polio diagnosis was almost certainly wrong. They didn't really know about GBS at the time though; although it was discovered around 1859, there were so few cases that most medical people really little idea that it existed or what it symptoms were. GBS has no cure (i.e. vaccine), although it can be mitigated by a series of blood transfusions.

That’s news to me.

Anyway, I can’t remember if I got the Salk shot or the Sabin sugar cube.

One of my classmates in parochial school got the polio when he was 10. He was a lucky survivor and could walk with the aid of heavy braces and crutches.

My son’s FIL had a mild case when he was young and survived with what I called “minor” disabilities. However as he got into his 60s he thought he was weakening faster than normal. Not wanting to be a “burden” on his wife, he shot himself. Sad story.

A World Health Organization official said Monday it is reclassifying the highly contagious triple-mutant Covid variant spreading in India as a "variant of concern," indicating that it's become a global health threat.
Maria Van Kerkhove, the WHO's technical lead for Covid-19, said the agency will provide more details in its weekly situation report on the pandemic Tuesday but added that the variant, known as B.1.617, has been found in preliminary studies to spread more easily than the original virus and there is some evidence it may able to evade some of the protections provided by vaccines.

Thank goodness we have a travel ban in place from India now.

Had to meet a witness in Hempstead today.  5 percent mask wearers at the Buccees in Waller. Zero percent at Krolczyk Meats in Hempstead.  Scored a very nice 11 pound brisket at the latter. Nice to see some sanity and common sense.

Well, mine, and (at time of publication in 2003)...
- Dr. Amand Goldman, Emeritus Professor of Pediatrics, UTMB
- Dr. Elizabeth Schmalstieg, Asst. Professor of Neurology, UTMB
- Dr. Daniel H. Freeman, Professor of Biostatics, UTMB
- Dr. Daniel Goldman, President of Expert Health Data Programming
- Dr. Franck Schmalstieg, Professor of Pediatrics at UTMB

And from what I've gathered, in the last 17 years, most medical experts have come to agree - Ken Burns also made a big deal out of the misdiagnosis in his history of the Roosevelts series.

Anyway, maybe... or maybe we all just slept at a Holiday Inn last night.

Here's the study which no one will read because it's got small print and a lot of terms no one understands:

Good news on Pfizer for 12-15.

Do we have any idea if/when J&J might get approved for kids?  I'd definitely prefer my kids only have to go through it once.

Wouldn't count on JNJ any time soon.  If you want to get them the shot, come around to the two dose regimen.
