“Trump supporters” is a spectrum.  Some are less enthusiastic than others and their support for Trump is not strong enough to survive a suicide pact. Even Jim Jones had his defectors.  And we just don’t need that many to dump him or stay home in November in order to evict him from the White House.

Just my take, but I do not think that the damage to the GOP will be done until is he is kicked out in 2020.  He has a narcissist's taste of power that cannot be quenched when he is fired.  Normally, a POTUS steps aside.  No fucking chance he does.   And the next GOP POTUS wannabe and Congressional GOP Leaders will have to deal with a constantly interfering in their affairs Trump, still making them kiss his ring, and still as thin skinned as ever when they dare to say he is wrong.   He will set up shop on some network, or if not that, get in daily twitter battles with everyone, insisting that his thought turds are the only ones to be followed.   This will prove increasingly hard for the GOP, as the only thing Trump cares about it Trump.  And as he cannot and will not care how his daily meddling in GOP politics will hurt team GOP with an ever younger, less white, less racist electorate, the GOP will either have to distance themselves from him, incurring his wrath and angering his Myrmidons, or go down the toilet with a large part of the GOP still members of the cult.

I'm actually hoping that, once he and his are out of office, all of the other chickens will come to roost.

I can't imagine how the dirt stays buried after a change at the AG level... Which might be the reason he fights not to leave.

Hospitalization is a pretty poor measure for international comparisons. Too many factors to influence.  I think deaths are probably the best we have at this time, but also vary from nation to nation. Death coding does not require a laboratory confirmation in the US and some other countries, only a clinical presentation consistent with COVID is necessary to code it as presumed or probable COVID on the death certificate. So looking at death should be able to reduce some of the bias related to testing capacity.

If ranked as individual countries, 6 US states would be in the top 10 for deaths per capita due to covid-19, taking spots 2, 3, 7, 8, 9  and 10.  And, if you dont count San Marino, the US would have spots 1, 2, 6, 7, 8, and 9.

The more you test, the more positive cases you find. That looks bad for Trump. Remember when he wanted to make the sick passengers stay on the cruise ship so it wouldn't affect his numbers? It's the same thing. The only thing increased testing can do for Trump is show us how much worse the crisis really is. It would also help us better combat the pandemic but it would be politically harmful to Trump so fuck you.

Right, and even if you focus on NY as the clear stand out we don't still get anywhere near supporting the claim that we are "10 times worse than Italy".  That would be like 80k deaths using current Italy death numbers and NY population.

The data viewed in that way do however support my statement earlier that the Northeastern US, Southern Europe, and Western Europe are regional epicenters at various phases in their wave of infection. Add LA and Northern Europe if you want to go next tier.

My mom. It took a team effort with my sister to help her finally see the light but it worked. She now sees him for the moron he is. His CDC visit was defining for her.

My father still worships him, he is a lost cause. He justifies his idiotic rambling as how businessmen talk not politicians. His defense of trump is laughably stupid. Rex Tillerson is a businessman and he doesn’t talk like a fucking moron.

And, since the Democrats are pushing for additional testing, he and his supporters see it as a political attack.  The fact that any credible medical expert, whether domestic or international, has identified it as a necessary element for countering the outbreak doesn't matter, because believing in science is a political position now.

Texas is moving forward with setting up testing centers.  Where the state will get all the needed tests from is going to be the hard part.

While I'm sure having the My Pillow brand logo stamped on someone else's KN95 masks adds tremendous value, going to a middleman for this is pretty damn stupid. The VA should just contract directly with a subcontractor that can actually do the work.

My mom has never admitted it to me but I’m pretty sure she voted for Trump, but Fox News wears her out (my stepdad has it on all the time) and I talk with her enough that she knows how horrible Trump is. She’s also known a few narcissists in her life so gets that he’s profoundly broken in all of the most dangerous ways a president can be. And she’s said she won’t vote for him in November (she’s still mum on whether she continues to support the GOP generally). But the last time I talked with her, she said “I’m just not sure I can vote for Joe Biden.” No reason given.

That’s what we’re dealing with. Even the educated center-right conservatives who only reluctantly voted for Trump in 2016 and now regret that decision for some reason just can’t bring themselves to vote for a democrat, even Joe Biden. I want to believe there’s some on the margins that are actually gettable, but I’m not seeing it.

They will have propaganda and fear mongering shoved up their asses for the next 6 months and it will work and Trump will win.

My mom is looking for any ray of hope for the GOP and sees anything Democrat as born with " a silver spoon " coastal elites. I mean nevermind that Trump is the most blatant example of that. Somehow Biden will always be worse because that's what the propaganda will push.
Or " maybe we need a business man to get us through this time"
She will vote away her social security too.

The shit these people say is mind bottling.

Again, it’s a spectrum.  The reformed GOPers in my family and work life employed that kind of thinking in 2016. (Although an uncle, a longtime Republican, actually had the balls to hold his nose and vote for Hillary in 2016). They regret voting for Trump now, and many are excited to vote for Biden in 2020.  A few will just skip voting for president.  Most would not have voted for Bernie.  They aren’t full-fledged liberals. They’re just “conservatives” (whatever the hell that means anymore) who see through the Trump charade and despise him.

On the other hand, I have family members who were apolitical before and now absolutely love Trump. Don’t get me wrong - they were reliable GOP voters pre-Trump.  But they didn’t pay attention or get excited by politics until Trump.

What I have yet to see in my personal life is someone who voted Dem before that has shifted to the right to support Trump. But I don’t know a lot of union worker types, which is where I suspect that type of voter is more common.

Well you don't know me, but I'm on record throughout this board as being a lifelong conservative who voted for Trump in 2016. I had some reservations when I voted for Trump, but I had been brainwashed to hate Hillary through Fox News. I also believed that he would be held in check by lifelong conservatives (boy was I wrong on all fronts).

It took probably 6-8 mos for me to realize we were screaming down Shit Creek with no paddle and a moron as our river guide. I turned off Fox News and started doing my own analysis. That is the key part, that is what it will take to turn a Trump cult member. You have to get them to turn off Fox or OANN.

This year was the first time I've ever donated money to a political campaign. I've contributed to the two democratic candidates that are running against Dan Crenshaw, voted for the first time ever in the Democratic Primary, ended up voting for Sima Ladjevardian for Congress and cast a vote for Pete though he apparently was offended because he dropped out practically the next day. Donated to MJ Hager (TX), Mark Kelly (AZ), Jaime Harrison (SC) and Amy McGrath (KY).

I'm not going to support a party that enables Trump. So there is one former Trump voter on the Surl who has seen the light and won't be voting for him in 2020. Oh and I do love to troll, taunt, question and harass friends and family who still support that shitbag.

I can't remember which year, 2008 or 2012 maybe, but I remember one of the Republican candidate debates where they asked who believed in creationism.  It was criticized as a trivial, irrelevant question, but, in retrospect, it was much more important than I realized.

I'm actually going to cut her a little bit of slack, for this reasoning: she has to toe some sort of line in order to remain "on the team," and she and Fauci know that they MUST stay on the team -- they can't help if they're on the outside.

Imagine that you are a senior officer, commanding troops under the command of a deranged general.  You could speak out against his insane plan to invade France with everyone paddling their own canoe, but that will just get you removed and replaced with some yes-man who will praise the general for his brilliant canoe idea.  OR, you can say what you have to in order to stay on the team, and then modify the canoe plan the best you can to try to achieve a successful invasion without losing all of your men.  NEITHER option is optimal -- but that's where we are -- our best bet is to do everything we can to make the canoe plan succeed, maybe even by renaming Higgins boats to "Trump Canoes" and praising them as the most brilliant and bestest canoe ever made.
