im talking about someone I know, a Dr., telling me they are worried about losing their license because they are aware of a veteran nurse letting someone die on an rolling bed outside an undisinfected room because they were “too tired”.
Believe whatever horseshit you want. Shit is bad.

Well, one unproven anecdote written on the internet doesn’t erase the good work I see daily with my own eyes.

This pandemic isn’t unique in its problems - medical incompetence does happen daily.

To ascribe all incompetence to every failing is dumb and unfair.

Our government and our system of healthcare and leadership at some hospitals are proving much more deadly in this pandemic than one nurse being “too tired”.

But I understand it’s much more satisfying to lay blame at the mythical bad nurse or doctor than face the rot in the leadership of our government and the way this country practices the business of healthcare.

Welp, it finally happened. I snapped in public today. I went into work for a bit this morning because I’m trying to figure out the safest way to host physicians we are recruiting given our CV-19 sit

  • I don't really know what to say anymore tbh. What happened last night is hard to put into words for anyone who hasn't worked in a hospital healthcare setting. Just unreal. Everyone is getting fucked.

The reality is we've moved more and more inpatient care to hospitalists, who are often overworked, underpaid relative to their workload and generally draw from a higher fmg base.

The ICU folks and subspecialists typically carry the burden and keep sicker patients alive and catch mistakes, which happen because 1) people are human and 2) those doctors taking care of your average patient are not the best and brightest (imo).  When you add something like covid, which is both not fully understood but also explosive in the number of cases that can arise, it stresses the system.

Add to that the scarcity of ICU beds (doesn't make economic sense to carry very expensive resources without being as close to capacity as possible), a non unified, often bizarre federal response that places politicians over scientists and physicians, and a public that has enough idiots that confuse mask use and public health initiatives with political issues like abortion, gun control, and taxes and you end with a brutal, embarrassing situation.

Our hospital has about a 3% antibody reactivity rate after almost 2000 hfw have been tested, including ICU and er staff... And there was some serious lack of ppe and ignorance about precautions early on.   It means that it's fucking embarrassing that the greatest country in the world can't get their collective heads out of their asses enough despite a large enough heads-up from Italy and China (who btw are now relatively fine) and more medical resources then most other countries.  This isn't that hard.  Wear a mask, physically distance and use some common sense.  Keep doing that and open the economy carefully while contact tracing and locally shutting down as needed until a vaccine is made.  Use said vaccine.  Move on.

So yeah, it's not surprising that as the workload exceeds our capacities, more mistakes aren't caught and more people die unnecessarily.

It's not gross incompetance.  It's just people dealing with a disease that they don't understand fully, under personal risk that clouds thinking further and at numbers that overwhelm.

The only gross incompetance is watching a failed businessman ignore the recommendations of any competent person and waging a war against reason and science.

Just caught Abbott’s “whoopsie” interview. It’s going to be interesting to watch him blame alcohol and bars for the second wave as he panders to his dry East TX base and steps over how he was flatly ordered to reopen by his oil holding puppeteers.

Make no mistake, when oil went negative the people with petroleum holdings didn’t give a fuck how many people would die. Abbott’s only priority has been getting people out driving around.

This. Apologies and backtracking by Abbott look hilariously pathetic

dude is a fucking moron. And that is coming from one of the dumbest people on surly

Mayor Adler was interviewed on CNN this morning.  I think he does an admirable job of staying on message.  He's very direct, but he doesn't just tee off on Abbott and Trump.  He attacks their words and policies, and in the case of Abbott, actually praised him for the statewide mask order, although he pointed out that he thought it happened too late.

I don't recall any Austin mayors that ever blew me away, and Adler certainly hasn't during his time in office, either, but I have to give him credit for doing what he can in response to this pandemic.

I just had a conversation with a neighbor and they are not taking any precautions when it comes to Covid 19 because, in their words, they prey and know Jesus will protect them.  It's good to know that nobody who prays to Jesus has gotten Covid or died from it yet.  I must have missed that news article.  All I could do was smile, say good luck, and walk away.  Meanwhile, my niece at UT just got diagnosed with it this week and she wears a mask when out, social distances and really only goes to the grocery store.  Guess she didn't pray enough.

I know a chick I used to kick it with back in the day that became a born again Christian after her partying days were over. She got covid about a month ago and was saying that it was fine because god was testing her strength by giving it to her. It was all apart of his plan. Evidently she got it pretty bad but didn't go to the hospital just prayed. Her faith is what saved her from dying. Damn I banged more than a few crazy chicks

Thanks and she is fairly better already.  Had a fever, got tested and it came back positive.  Her fever was gone the next day and she felt better but she is still quarantining for the next 2 weeks to be safe.  One of her roommates also tested positive while the other tested negative (guessing she will test positive in the next week most likely).

I’m so sorry about your niece.

I’ll be thinking healing thoughts for her. As someone who’s lost a dear friend to this virus I don’t wish it on anyone.

Take her some “happy things” if you can - juice, bland but healthy food, gift cards for video streaming services/video games, audiobooks/e-books.

You can have most of that delivered or sent electronically.

Good luck to her and keep us posted on how she fares.

Lol you think Donald Trump can read

An Arizona woman says she was sent by President Trump and a conspiracy theory group to take Target to task for selling face masks ... and to flaunt her alleged high-priced watch.

The Internet has dubbed this gal here "QAnon Karen" after she filmed herself going into a Scottsdale-area Target and knocking down all the face masks on display in one of their aisles. She had to talk herself up before doing it, making it sound like a last stand mission.

She rants and about "not doing it" anymore -- which we think means she's not gonna let face masks be sold anymore??? Who the hell knows, but she went to town on the display.

Some staffer eventually comes over and asks her to stop, but she refuses ... incoherently saying they let "everyone else do it," and then questioning if they're trying to stop her because she's a white, blonde woman. But wait, it gets even more cringe-worthy!

Quote

'Karen' ponders whether they're hassling her because she has on a "$40,000 Rolex" ... just utter nonsense, but also hilarious. People have noted that Rollies don't usually shop at and/or terrorize Targets -- not really fair, because Targets are awesome. But again, this woman thinks she was sent by higher powers ... those powers being 45 and QAnon, of which she says she's a spokesperson.

Foreign medical grad... Which doesn't mean bad.... However, our best American trained grads don't become hospitalists for multiple reasons... And hospitalists are who take care of you when you aren't in the ICU.  They have a large checklist of tasks they have to get done with a large number of patients that they don't know well.  And often their fountain of knowledge is not as deep as it needs to be for a challenging task.

In academic hospitals, fucking new guy is another fear this time of year!  You don't want a new intern intubating you solo because the senior residents/attendings are overwhelmed.

The US set another record for novel coronavirus cases on Thursday. Reuters reported that the country confirmed more than 55,000 new COVID-19 cases that day, which is "a new daily global record" for the pandemic.

Earlier this week, US epidemiologist Dr. Anthony Fauci warned that the US may soon see as many as 100,000 new cases of COVID-19 a day if the current trajectory of the outbreak is not changed.

Scott Gottlieb, a former commissioner for the US Food and Drug Administration, even suggested the true number of US daily infections is between 400,000 and 500,000, though there is not enough testing to find them all.

Quote

The current epidemic in the US is completely out of control. However, the US federal government still insists that the rapid increase in infection figures is due to more testing. Data released by the US Labor Department on Thursday showed the country added 4.8 million jobs in June. The White House soon boasted about its economic achievements. But people doubt whether the US government is making utmost efforts to rein in the virus and save more American lives.

Lies are dominating US society's recognition of the epidemic. Political parties have put their interests in campaigning in the first place, which has distorted the society's attention and allocation of resources. The US fight against the virus is paralyzed. There is no national strategy to alleviate the epidemic. Political calculations have stunted the battle against COVID-19.

Quote

Americans are not willing to temporarily sacrifice their freedom for the fight against the virus. The federal government has not corrected the attitude. Worse, it used the sentiment to promote the resumption of economic activities in a risky manner. It is making ordinary people responsible for the out-of-control epidemic.

The US economy has slightly recovered, yet the price it is paying is too high. It will surely become a burden for the US' future economic development. The US government's approach seems to be shaping US society's greater tolerance toward the virus, making people less afraid of being infected.

Spoiler

As the only superpower, the US can shape global public opinion as it wishes. The country has manipulated the understanding over the novel coronavirus in many societies worldwide. It has not contributed to the global fight against the crisis. On the contrary, it is setting a terrible example.

No matter how the virus surfaced, the US plays the most negative role in making sure the novel coronavirus spreads fast across the globe, and we are far from ending it.

Can anyone in the world recall of outstanding contributions the US has made to the global efforts against COVID-19? The only thing people can remember is the US' repeated accusations against China, apart from its astonishingly large number of infections and deaths. Washington has distracted the world's attention.

The US is supposed to lead the world in establishing a global anti-pandemic front. But it continued to criticize the World Health Organization (WHO), and announced it would sever ties with the body.

As long as its epidemic continues to spread, the global anti-virus fight can hardly take a fundamental turn for the better.

In the coming fall and winter, the US epidemic will likely run rampant, and more countries and regions will be forced to suffer because of the US.

Everyone with a brain knows the right thing to do is to shut down like Italy did until we get this under control.  We are not going to do that because “muh economy” and our government refuses to bail out poor people.

This isn’t political, but Atria — the senior living apartments in Austin where my mother lives — just announced their first covid-19 case over the weekend.  It is a resident who is currently hospitalized.

In lieu of thoughts and prayers, please throat punch a denier, hoaxer, down-player or conspiracy theorist today on her behalf.

Thanks.

That sucks. Hope your mom is okay and that they can keep it contained with the facility. Senior housing properties have generally taken a pretty hard line on managing the virus so hopefully they're able to isolate/trace the case effectively.
