I went to HS with his sister Lindy.  I don't remember Dennis, but that last name living that close to my home town got me digging and I confirmed via an obituary for their Dad.

Lindy was the prototypical "8 on a scale of 1 to 10 cheerleader type who drove a badass old early 70's orange and white Ford pickup truck".  OK, that's a little specific.  Anyway, she was hot.  I can't find pics.  I don't recall her being particularly sharp, so maybe that explains Dennis.

Welp, it finally happened. I snapped in public today. I went into work for a bit this morning because I’m trying to figure out the safest way to host physicians we are recruiting given our CV-19 sit

  • I don't really know what to say anymore tbh. What happened last night is hard to put into words for anyone who hasn't worked in a hospital healthcare setting. Just unreal. Everyone is getting fucked.

There's a lot of space to work with between "not particularly sharp" and "antivax horsepaste peddler"

This doesn’t get talked about enough. The loss of a cognitive elite is devastating to communities. It’s not just the brain drain of potential, it’s that the people who get left behind become progressively less smart and disciplined. Being around intelligent people who think critically prods others to think critically. Having intelligent, ambitious people capable of making rational decisions and positive life choices provides a pattern to emulate.

And I realize that this will be more controversial but having a cognitive elite that is progressively self-segregated from even average people is not entirely salubrious to the cognitive elite. There is a temptation to assume, even non-explicitly, that most people are about as capable and competent as you are and thus to believe they are all as capable of operating responsibly in the system you’d choose for yourself. And that is an error that can have tragic consequences especially at the policy level.

He lives in a world where masks are useless (and may even be harmful) and coronavirus poses no risks to kids. If he's put any thought into it, this is someone who appears to be incapable of processing new information correctly a majority of the time. He's exactly the type of person who should have no say in how we govern ourselves.

Man, the mask thing has been around since the beginning. Had a friend tell me with absolute certainty both that the oxygen level inside the mask quickly drops to and stays at like 16% (been a while but I feel like that’s roughly the % of exhaled breath so that might be where that figure originated) as well as that covid particles are smaller than what a n95 mask can filter.

he somehow believed that both things could be true, that the mask can filter oxygen and carbon dioxide (and nitrogen I guess as all gases that make up our air would want to equilibrate) but not filter covid. And that individual covid virus packets are what is being expelled.

It really does go to @Brisketexan and his narrative regarding 'ranch' expertise vs other types of expertise and how that mindset in situ can contaminate and cloud a person's judgement from the Tesla owning real estate magnate to the fry cook at McDonalds to the calf cow operator to the scientist at the JPL. In their domain, they can and do process new information--their 'oh, crap, this happened' response is often met with their past experience on how to work through something. Alas, there are folks that when confronted with the unfamiliar that steps into their home turf double down on confidence when their footing is unsure. "I've assessed the risks and I don't need the vaccine," said Phil Valentine whose judgement on vaccines and their protection was sketchy but  based on his popularity in Tennessee, his radio demographic assessment I would never doubt.

In our everyday lives we adopt routines for expedience, for safety, and for reasons known only to ourselves. The very things that disrupt these routines and why are both the source for his dismissive attitude and his perplexed perspective and frustration. "They don't work," because he never cared whether or not they worked-- any subtlety and nuance to the discussion (regarding type of mask/how to correctly wear a mask/how a mask works) was most likely going to be irrelevant. 'Facts' have become a political football and lost to that nuance and lost to the microscope of critical thought.

Doesn’t look good for the texags poster https://texags.com/forums/84/topics/3215580/1

  • tested positive on the 8th. Mild symptoms.
  • Got worse on the 11th
  • started ivermectin on the 12th
  • Low oxygen #s on the 16th, went to hospital. Started 5 day course of Remdesivir
  • No updates since the 18th

I gather he is a regular poster on Texags and a 6 day absence is unusual.

N95 masks are measured against .3 microns because this is the most difficult particle size to trap due to how this sized particle moves. Smaller particles are actually easier to trap. This is counter-intuitive, and is due to the turbidity of particle movement. .3 microns is the inflection point where laminar flow meets turbidity.

Remdesivir hasn't had that much success has it? Wonder why that was selected.

Profit margin.

Strange how some people won't take the main substance known to protect yourself in advance. But then when they catch COVID, they run to every snake oil option and whine that the FDA/CDC doesn't have more therapeutics available. Non-medical here but I was under the impression that it's actually very difficult to create medicine to knock out viruses. The best course that we normally have is to teach your immune system to fight it. You know vaccines.

I'd be surprised. Earlier in the pandemic when I was lurking around over there, there was a popular poster, a physician, who died and it didn't seem to make a difference. When one of the threads is essentially a 'rant' about how the 'doctors didn't do anything to save my uncle's unvaccinated life,' because the doctors "wouldn't give him ivermectin" or much of anything beyond oxygen, I'm not sure much learning is going to take place. Didn't occur to anyone that the staff was likely so overwhelmed they didn't have time to tell the family that oxygen was probably the only recourse and that perhaps  palliative care the compassionate solution. Or maybe they did and no one was listening.

They scream "DO SOMETHING"  and ignored the doctors who said, "we did--we told you to get vaccinated. Thoughts and prayers."

So weird how they applaud people that take ivermectin but boo when someone takes the vaccines. Bizarro world.

Fair point. When I went to the link, it looked like the ER was a stand alone unit so given the profit margin assessment by @Fudge Nuggets, that makes sense. If the patient asks for it, why say no?

He mentions going to Caprock Hospital in Bryan. Anyone know much about them? They look to be a relatively small operation that highlights their imaging capabilities and 10 doctors. Perhaps he had no choice or needed to go to the closest place, but there is a BS&W hospital in south College Station.

Personally if I have a life threatening disease and experiencing immediate problems, I'm driving the extra 9 minutes to BS&W. They will at least have more local and system wide knowledge on covid care.

Well if good enough for a collie, good enough for an aggy.

If you cant wear a mask youre either a pussy or fat as fuck and will prolly die soon anyway

There isnt another way I can put that

They’ll blame the doctors for not continuing his ivermectin regimen.

I imagine there are quite a few points of divergence on medical decisions between you and him on this little journey.
