I think we’re all missing the big story here. Applying the axiom that every rightwing accusation is a confession, there is apparently a weird new trend of conservatives dressing up like animals and shitting in litter boxes.

Arms do not come off with one swipe of a machete, I don’t give a fuck how sharp it is or if you have the mass of Arnold Schwarzenegger.

thank you. I have been trying to put into simple terms what that man is, and this is pretty much perfect.

yup. another person who has chosen profit over truth.

It would probably be easier if right wing icons just apologized when they actually told the truth. Save everyone a little time.

There was a time when I think Rogan was genuinely trying to navigate some kind of middle ground between the right and left, but somewhere around 2019 or so he just went full on into the right wing grift.

He claims to not be right wing, and will very occasionally criticize people on the right (he finally criticized Trump in the past year), but as a former listener, I started to notice that he and the majority of his guests were constantly critical of the left and almost never critical of the right.

When I started listening (2015 or so) there were A) less politically based guests, and B) when there were, there was a pretty even left/right balance.  Eventually it got to be like 90/10 pro right wing and came to dominate the show, with Rogan bringing right wing talking points out of left field into totally apolitical topics.  I'm not sure I've listened to an entire episode since the lead up to the 2020 election.

It would be nice to see him go back to what the show used to be, because I learned about a lot of lot interesting people (Dan Flores and SC Gwynne being some of my favorites) prior to his devolution into political buffoonery.

Everything was less political in 2015. Ah, better times. But I also think that people move to the right as they age, so it’s somewhat predictable.

Some of us move to the left.

Sirius will probably give him a raise.

Wow, I can't believe Joe Rogan would tell a lie on his show to millions and millions of listeners that put trans kids in danger and then not even apologize about it afterward.

I've become more conservative in a traditional sense as I've aged, but I'm vehemently opposed to the Republican party.  They're just quasi-Fascists at this point that want to turn America into a Christian theocracy with an unelected government that they control.

If you’re lazy and stop thinking as you age succumbing to the conspiracy theory moment does become more of a risk as you move into senility that’s true.  And if you’re looking to make a quick buck taking advantage of the olds has been around almost as long as the world’s oldest profession.

hint: being conservative and shoveling today’s right wing hot garbage are two entirely different things.

It’s less to do with the current topics and more of a change in the way you approach them. I’ve noticed it in a lot of my friends as we move into the 2nd half of our 30’s.

We’ll see where we’re at in ‘24 before I jump ship, but fair enough.

You're telling me that your neighbors and friends, all of whom are SURE there's no gay people living around them and are all terrified of CRT, are all getting more conservative as you get older?

and if you vote republican as an ordinary conservative you are complicit in the problem. I’m as queer as a three dollar bill and I have strong conservative tendencies, I’m beginning to take less financial risks, I hate roller coasters, I lecture my kids about safe sex and the dangers of drugs. I repeat my mom’s statement “nothing good happens after midnight” and I think drinking less alcohol and eating your vegetables are good ideas. Those are conservative approaches to various topics not many are political so you are right in a sense that folks tend to be more conservative as they age. But That’s a far cry from systematically dismantling a representative republic with religious views as the bedrock of the government you want so it’s my way or the highway. And truthfully you can be more conservative and also curious and open to other ways of doing things. Ironically, at end of life, folks finally get it - life is short, be you and don’t let anyone get in the way.

Fundamentally, the argument really boils down to rate of change, so it makes sense that as age we have less appetite for anything radical. I’m going to see who they run in ‘24, that will tell me a lot. If they can’t understand that suburban women are the reason for the current momentum and still decide to run Trump, well, they’re more or less conceding the election. I wouldn’t even bother voting and I’ve never missed an election.

No, my college buddies still in Austin. Although one of them married a chick from Longview, so maybe that’s rubbing off as well.

Well he's going to announce in like 3 weeks, so I don't think you'll even need to wait til 2024.  Once he announces, he's the nominee.  They won't dare go against him.

Never underestimate the stupidity and tendency to pay for a rage fix of the American right. For broadcasters, it's where the money is. I think if the grid went down, rage addicts would be roaming the forests swatting wasp nests to get those sweet rage-inducing stings.

I DON"T LIKE CHANGE!

*votes for a party that continually changes tax laws to benefit the wealthy, loosens gun laws, wants to eliminate the social safety net, and loosens regulation so that more of the bad externalities of society fall on poors*

it'd be one thing if the republican party were a party of, "hey we seem to be in a good place right now let's not tinker around too much."  but they're not and nothing illustrates that better than the bush tax cuts.  handed a surplus and a system where revenue was enough of a match for spending that debt/gdp would generally decrease, they promptly blew a hole in the deficit and have set us on this path of trillion dollar deficits.  which republicans bitch about incessantly.  to them, the house is on fire but they never take responsibility as the guys who poured gasoline all over the place and then lit the match.

People used to get more conservative as they got older because they would get more concerned about their money and keeping as much as they could.

That was during times when social issues were trending in a progressive direction. Abortion was legal, voting wasn’t being suppressed and queer rights were becoming a reality. It was okay to vote R because the crazy anti-black and anti-queer snake handlers were a small portion of the party.

Now they are the majority and want to turn back the clock to 1950. They want to say the N word and force women to carry babies while restricting voting by non whites. If you’re still trending more conservative as you get older now, because you are want to keep a little bit more of your nest egg due to lower taxes, you’re a certified piece of shit and everyone knows it

I had a couple of conservative friends who were begging/demanding that I listen to Rogan's podcast with Brett Weinstein about CRT.  They were just completely convinced that it was fully capturing what was happening in American high education.   I was like, "I have spent 25 years working in higher ed -- why the hell should I spend one second listening to a college dropout and a guy who was faculty at literally one of the worst universities in the country tell me what's happening?"

It eventually dawned on me that these friends (both UT grads) had absolutely no ability to discern what was true and what was bullshit, which is a character trait of most conservatives (and Rogan's audience).   And he works at the Pentagon, which is reeeeeeal comforting.

I spent my grad research plus the following 6 years doing defense research (DARPA, etc.).  There is a lot of dumbassery to go around in that particular part of our government.

The majority is definitely pushing back against anything related to the issue of gender. It seems to be playing a significant role in moving suburban moms towards the Republicans this cycle.

I really wonder if this has always been the case or if it has been amplified by the constant barrage of media we live in now.  Neither is good, but just from a sociological standpoint, I'm curious.

If I assume this is true, why do you think that is?  How does it affect anyone?  It's just like LGBTQ to me.  Doesn't affect me and none of my business.
