A helicopter crashed and burst into flames Sunday morning amid foggy conditions in the hills above Calabasas, with some fatalities reported.

The crash occurred shortly before 10 a.m. near Las Virgenes Road, south of Agoura Road, according to a watch commander for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The crash ignited a brush fire and made it difficult for firefighters and emergency personnel to get to the aircraft, he said. Sources at the scene said they believed there were multiple fatalities, but the exact number was unclear.

The fire was contained to the crash site, officials said. There were no homes in the area, and no roadways were impacted.

TMZ website is borked. I saw the story about a plane crash on twitter, didn't pay it any mind. Sad for his children.

#1 Kobe was/is the damn truth.

#2 Frick helicopters.

I hope this isn't true, my god

The Los Angeles Times, slightly more reputable than TMZ, reports the helicopters crashed and fatalities, but no mention of Bryant.  Then again, they're probably adhering to the Holly Rule, no mentions of names until family is first notified.  RIP to all, terribly way to go.

Leaves behind 4 daughters. He was absolutely brilliant with a basketball. RIP.

Are we sure his family wasn’t on it?

TMZ while trashed...is right a hell of a lot more times than wrong in these types of high profile stories

God damn. No fucking shit. At least in an airplane, you can trick yourself into believing that the pilot will glide you into a nice, Sully emergency landing if something goes wrong.

Not on ESPN yet, source?

NBATV is playing last night's Laker game. When I flipped over to see if they were carrying anything about it, they flashed a tweet from Kobe congratulating Lebron for passing him on the all-time scoring list. Very eerie!

Gearing in radio, five perished in helo on hillside. All major news sites not confirming. ...

Omg this is a huuuuuge hit to the sports world. Prayers for all.

Sucks. Even without basketball, he was an extremely driven, intellectually curious mind that had already accomplished great things and was bound to succeed in anything he set his sights on.

Holy shit. I hated Kobe. That's how you know he was great.

RIP Mamba. You broke my heart, a lot.

Nothing from a major source. It would shut down ESPN if it happened, right now.

So you’re saying it was LBJ?
