John Goodman 10 to 15 years ago...that's the best you're gonna get.

Probably would have worked well with Johnny Knoxville 10-15 years ago as junior

I'm necro-bumping this thread, as this is the first time I've skimmed through it. But I read about this the other day (also a very old article) pertinent to your post. Here's the letter Anthony Hopkin

  • We all know they'd cast Melissa McCarthy

I watching OwningMahoney(sp?) about a month ago, and most definitely had thoughts of how much was lost when PSH passed.

Just watched for the first time a movie probably nobody has seen or maybe only seen once: Popeye (1980).

Shelley Duvall - Perfect spot on casting for Olive Oyl. It's creepy how perfect it is.

Robin Williams - Popeye. I truly can't decide if it was also perfect casting or if it was horrible.

I wonder if it was just truly impossible to cast Popeye. But then I saw The Rock is going to play Popeye in a reboot next year.

I've got nothing to add other than I heard a story the other day about the set of Popeye. Apparently it was cocaine central. They filmed the movie in Malta and would fly the dailies back to LA (I guess) so they could be watched. Then the empty canisters would be filled with coke and flown back to the set in Malta. Rinse. Wash. Repeat.

I remember seeing this in the theaters. I was very young. I don't remember it being great but I'd love to revisit it for nostalgia alone. Didn't Robert Altman direct?

Disagree.  Avon is raw/street and Stringer is trying to be polished/professional.  Elba's polished performance is exactly what the part needs, same with Harris less refined acting.

All hits.  Critics didn't give this movie any love when it was released.  Vastly under rated movie.  Newman fucking owns in it.  Cruise is perfect go, go, go 80s up and comer.  MEM is great as streetwise female hustler.

But seriously, I think Nathan Lane could possibly pull of the Buford T. Justice character.

I think Bryan Cranston could play Buford T. Justice.

Kevin James?  I think you need someone with the lovable oaf (Ralph Cramden) history to buttress the harsh characteristics of Justice.

In a somewhat different direction Pesci 15 years ago would have been great casting for BTJ.

Uh Paul Newman won an Academy Award for his role in this movie and MEM was nominated for her role.

I'm going to retract that.

They killed and the casting was perfect.  Of course Newman was Felson so that casting goes back to The Hustler.

The critics didn't like COM in 1986.

Probably just comparing it to much to The Hustler.

I was like 9 or 10 when this came out.  My mom loved Newman and so I was "forced" to watch it.  This is right on the heels of Top Gun.  At that age I had ZERO concept of hustling.  I'm sitting there like "why is Paul Newman so pissed at Maverick about winning?"

pretty much same experience.

Pool shots were cool, but the story was totally lost on me as a youth.  A person probably needs to be at least 30 years old to start to get it.

Gets better every time I watch it as I grow older.

Hes lost his fastball and should not play Southerners anymore.

Based on his horrid Colonel Parker role in Elvis, you are probably right.

He would need to gain some weight butI can him pulling it off.

I would submit Eddie Murphy as BTJ.  He does a hell of a Ralph Kramden impersonation, already.

Norton! How would you like to fuck me in the ass?

Whooahhhhhhh!

Humanah…humanah…humanah…

Mack Brown as BTJ. No one can come close to holding a grudge like BTJ than Mack.

No. He would catch the Bandit in the first 20 minutes

In regards to BC above.

Anthony Michael Hall pulls off light hearted, slightly cocky jock in Johnny Be Good pretty well after a series of performances as the geek in some foundational teen 80's movies.  Kind of impressive in that context

Buford T. Justice's voice coming over the CB radio:

“Breaker, breaker for the Bandit.  I don’t know who you are. I don’t know what you want. If you are looking for ransom I can tell you I don’t have money, but what I do have are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my future daughter-in-law go now that’ll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you, but if you don’t, I will look for you, I will find you.  I'm not givin' up! I'm not givin' up! I'm never gonna give up! I'm never gonna give up! I'll get you, you sumbitch!”

It got all kinds of love. It's a POS compared to the original. It's as though they thought the original was simply about pool.

Iron Claw (I never saw it for this reason.  Was it any good?)

It really bugs me when they just completely ignore physical stature in movies.  For many roles the physical size is probably not that important.  But it is critical in some roles.  Like the Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher comments.  It matters because a TON of the backstory and appeal of Reacher is his size.  So they make a professional wrestling movie and cast 2 of the shortest actors in Hollywood.  I'm turned off before it even comes out.

Maybe it's been mentioned on this thread, but I believe Christoph Waltz as Hans Landa is one of the best performances and casting decisions in modern cinema history.

I read somewhere years ago that Tarantino was having a hard time finding the right actor to play Landa, to the point where he almost didn't make the film. Then Waltz came into the picture and the rest is history.

On Iron Claw, they mashed up a lot of things to fit into a movie. A flawed masterpiece but the only casting they missed was Ric Flair. That was the climax of the movie and the actor whiffed.

For Reacher, the movie which was made possible by Cruise, it doesnt make sense from the screenplay and direction to have a huge intimidating guy with a complex backstory. The movie worked because he was a mystery and he was underestimated. The mystery unraveled as Reachers specific interaction with the suspected shooter was revealed.

Fans of the source material hated it, and they may be right, a better movie could have been made, but the movie was crafted with Cruise in mind. Not a casting miss for the movie.

Some fair points.  On Iron Claw, they didn’t need giants to play the roles but the 2,big stars are what around 5’8”?  They are fine actors but we know they are really short.  And I don’t mind using shorter or taller actors for certain roles, but when you’re playing a professional wrestler, then your physique is a definite characteristic of the role.

My understanding is that Tom Cruise‘s production company bought the rights to reacher. So I do think it was poorly cast if he bought the rights with the expectation that he himself would play the lead.  The books are very popular for a certain segment of the population. I cannot believe that other companies were not interested in purchasing the rights.

it just seems like a bad idea to me to make a movie that is certainly tailored to a somewhat specific group of audiences. And the people that like the reacher books are definitely a big segment of that particular audience. So you kind of alienated a large percentage of the target audience that you were going for.  And, for the record, I think Tom Cruise is a fantastic actor.

I stand by the above post, but I hadn't realized that this thread was as long as it is- so it's unlikely those haven't already been suggested.

Here's a deep cut for the Miss category though.

For those of you who don't remember, this was a  Cyrano de Bergerac adaptation in which Thurman (looks) and Garofalo (personality) combined efforts and fooled a dude into thinking they were one person.

The problem- and I'll go to my grave with this opinion- is that Garofalo is way better looking that Thurman in this movie.

Predators (2010) is also well-cast and a pretty good spinoff/sequel.

I thought Wiley was the weakest in the cast.  Didn’t look like a baseball player but Lin later loved the kid.
