Need the collective Austin surly wisdom here.  A good friend’s son is getting married in Austin in September.  She has to host the rehearsal dinner for 30-50.  As the bride has chosen TexMex for the wedding reception dinner, she is thinking barbecue.  She is in SoCal so is asking for a little help on recs.  It’s her only child and she doesn’t want to fuck it up.

so:  barbecue

30-50 guests

Can be at restaurant or catered to a venue.  Location somewhat irrelevant.

I’ve had micklethwait catered before and it was 10/10. They also have great sides.

We had our similarly sized rehearsal dinner at County Line.

Don't do that.  (Marriage is fine, dinner was very "eh".)

Do not sleep on pok-e-joes catering. Don't confuse their brick and mortar with their catering business. It's not gonna melt your face off but it's good and they know what they are doing.

This.

Similar to Bert's. Their catering when they still had the campus location was great. In store not so much (other than the T Man)

The bride wants Tex Mex so the mom is looking at bbq? Those aren't the same thing.

TexMex for the reception, BBQ for the rehearsal dinner.

My daughter is visiting her cousin at UT this weekend and asked for bbq recs. Suggestions for broke college kids?

They are at Terry Blacks now and I told her not to get the beef rib just because of price.

Thanks for the recs on catering bbq.  I’ve forwarded them and hopefully that’s all my good deed on this.

Stiles Switch 2 or 3 meat plate is super reasonable at around $30 plus or minus.

Any thoughts about Rollin Smoke off East Cesar Chavez? Niece (no pics) and her hubby (USNA grad; was on the football team) are in town this weekend for her birthday celebration. They're staying downtown and we told them we'd like to take them out for lunch and that's the place they've selected after hearing "great things" from friends. She's from Spring, he's from Oklahoma and to the best of my knowledge most of the BBQ they've had has been from her dad's backyard offset (it's...edible).

I’ve liked it every time I’ve been. It’s located in Chalmers, which can get pretty packed and loud based on time of day.

Any opinions on Parish BBQ off Manor near KG BBQ? I've heard it's very good.

had it a couple months ago, it was good. the duck and brisket were the standouts.

Hit up Churchrow on Anderson at lunch today. It’s in the old Black Gold location and is basically a new version of Valentina’s with Miguel manning the pits but not the money.

Got there at 12:30. It was packed but I was second in line. You order 2 feet inside the door so there’s no room inside for a line so it’ll always look packed from the street. always wanted to try the La Reina smoked pork neck sandwich so I order it and a side of beans. 45 minutes later, I got my beans and free fajita taco as an apology for the wait. 1 minute later the La Reina came out but instead of a sandwich it was a taco. Maybe there’s a version of both are on the menu and I didn’t specify which. Regardless, it and the fajita taco were both fucking stellar. The meat was perfect and the tortillas are the best in town. Hopefully, they figure out how to speed up the kitchen. That was the only stumbling block.

Probably not the thread for this question, but whatever. Does anyone know how much a beef rib bone weighs? I've always wondered how much I'm paying for the bone. It's gotta be at least 4 ounces right? Maybe more?

They are pretty thin and not super dense. I don't think they weigh a quarter of pound. If you're already paying the current market prices for brisket, a beef rib bone is going to negligible compared to everything else.

I wondered how that was going to work over there.
