I’m not looking for much here. Reasonably healthy options, and decent food would be a plus. A good cup of coffee is a must. Needs to be inside The Loop.

Opening thoughts:

Dots

Spanish Flowers

Bonus round: Good late night spots in Austin on the way back from DKR to Houston. I’m looking at you East Manor and Airport Blvd.

Yeah houston lacks a diner scene. I just learned that 59 diner is no more. Not that it was the best but just one less option. Katz's? That new place where liberty kitchen used to be sounds like it will be 24 hrs.

Chachos

I always overlook House of Pies. How’s the food? I’ve only ordered pies from there.

Is Chachos any good? I’ve heard mixed reviews.

Are you underage and trying to buy beer?

Reasonably Healthy and 24/7 dining aren't really 2 things that go arm and arm skipping down the street. And I'm not sure I'd qualify "good coffee" for lots of these places either.

Lots of good places that are open late, but not too many that are true 24/7 joints. Have you heard of Whataburger?

Ruchi's?
That would also be in the list. Haven't been there since the one on shepherd was bulldozed to put in the 7th drugstore in a 2 mile radius.

Jim’s would do very well in Houston. Not sure why they’ve never come east.

they did and left.

Prior to 1980, the restaurant chain expanded into the Houston metro area until Frontier withdrew and sold off the Houston locations.

Andy's on 11th is legit.  A poster also mentioned Chacho's.  I actually did the one at 45 and Tidwell, and while the food is good, I wouldn't head there late night.

Andy’s is pretty solid. Not good, but solid.

drive thru is your friend. their taco norteno is damn good

Ruchi’s spicy green sauce, pickled garlic, and burrito is the antidote to a long night of drinking. On the downside, at several of the locations you have a decent chance of being stabbed.

Chachos? Are you a rapper?

Chacho's on Westheimer is safe enough.  I wouldn't recommend any place within a few miles radius of the Gunspoint/Aldine/Northline area.

several  years back, walking into chacho's - saw a guy try to run over another guy in the parking lot. he did land a glancing blow.

God I miss Jolly Science.

Some time in the early 90s, a friend and I went to some grunge show (may have been Soundgarden) at the Vatican. Tad was the opening band. After the show, we went to Jaliscience. After we ate, we were standing outside talking to some friends we ran into when Tad rolls up in a beat up station wagon. They are hammered as shit and don't even park in a parking spot. As they stumble out of the car and over to the restaurant, we start chatting them up and they are pretty nice guys. Then all of a sudden two HPD cruisers roll up really fast with a camera crew (maybe from Cops or some other show) and shit gets all chaotic really fast. Tad guys get put into the back of the cruisers (which isn't easy because they were some big dudes who weren't going willingly) and we have to convince HPD that we weren't them and aren't drunk. Good times.

they just painted the exterior of the vatican - no longer a boring off white building
