This is awesome... Yes - that is Eric Dickerson in a gold Trans-Am.

  • Definitely need to swing by the Boulevard and to a game now that SMU is in a Power 4 conference.  SMU definitely has no love for FSU.

Just don't look at the other 2 games.

ACC is just 8 conference games - wish it was 9. They and the SEC both need to fix that.

Only one FCS is okay when you're playing two P4's.

SEC going to 9 conference games starting next year.

Holy shit is our defense a pile of shit. The offense can’t seem to stop turning it over or committing penalties either. Down 10-0 to Missouri St.

Jennings is a fucking disaster. Joke is on me for thinking he would improve coming into this season.

And we don't have a kicker.

And our punter sucks.

And everyone is injured.

We could lose this game.

Rhett is going to kill someone at halftime. This is beyond undisciplined. Absolute joke of a first half.

SMU phasing out “Pony Up!” as a slogan, but keeping the Shetland Pony live mascot. This article says that phrase came to be used in 2007. I was enrolled at SMU in 2007 and had no idea, lol. I never attended a game, they were dogshit, and my undergrad OKST was my sports focus. Why would a new phrase come into existence at a time when attendance was in the dozens? Seems odd that alumni would be so attached to such a recent thing but there’s some pushback to keep the slogan. If anyone has a subscription to DMN I wonder if that article has more details (link below). The following is from Chron.com which I suspect might be more sarcastic than DMN would be.

SMU doesn't want to 'Pony Up,' anymore, it wants to 'Kick 'em'

Southern Methodist University wants you to know it's all grown up now.

By Leah Vann, Sports Culture ReporterSep 17, 2025

SMU wants to get off the 'Pony Up,' rally cry.

Instead, Board of Trustees Chair David Miller wants to ride with something like "Kick 'Em Stangs," because it's got to be compatible with other Texas Power 4 clique members: Hook 'Em, Gig 'Em, Wreck 'Em and Sic 'Em.

"We're SMU Mustangs," Miller told the Dallas Morning News. "We're not SMU Ponies."

The 'Pony Up,' rally cry, according to the school's website, is often accompanied by the "pony ears" gesture, a modified peace sign where you relax your finger to look like pony ears. The phrase has been part of the SMU culture since 2007.

But where Miller's statement gets hazy is the fact that SMU is... of both Pony and Mustang lineage.

Peruna, the SMU mascot since 1932, is a black Shetland pony known for its feisty stallion personality. According to SMU's The Daily Campus newspaper, Peruna I was donated by a local racetrack owner who felt the powerhouse pony embodied SMU. From there, the school's students decided that the school would take on the "Mustangs," as its official mascot, since the wild horse had the physical embodiment of a "petite pony."

Shetland ponies are a special Scottish breed of pony that has short legs and is very strong. They were especially helpful for riding, driving and packing purposes back in the old days But now, they're more frequently cute miniature horses ridden by small children or appearing as a 'Lil Sebastian' at  the petting zoo. (If you haven't seen Parks and Rec, look it up.)

Peruna is small, strong, wild and, honestly, adorable. But that's not exactly what football players (or athletes) want to be known for.

According to Miller, both head football coach Rhett Lashlee and head basketball coach Andy Enfield agreed that the image they want to portray to recruits is "not that of a pony, but of wild charging mustangs."

It's really just a technicality, but SMU, since joining the Atlantic Coast Conference, is the only Power 4 conference team with the Mustang mascot. The change also comes as an hour-long documentary about SMU football's program rebuild from the NCAA's "death penalty" called, "Thunder On: Resurgence of the SMU Mustangs," premieres at 2 p.m. Sunday on ESPN.

SMU Athletic Director Damon Evans even used #ThunderOn, as a way to market yet another new phrase. Meanwhile, the football team wore 'Kick 'Em, Stangs,' shirts to Saturday's game at Missouri State.

Nevertheless, it seems SMU is having an identity crisis.

But Lashlee maybe underestimated the amount of backlash the program would get for trying to phase out, 'Pony Up.'

"We love our fans, and we love passionate fans, and if you say, 'Pony Up' to me, I’m going to freaking say, 'Pony Up' back. And if you say, 'Go Mustangs,' I’m gonna say, 'Go Mustangs.' And if you say, 'Kick 'Em, Stangs,' I’m going to kick something.'"

Fuck. Obviously meant TCU.

What's going on with that offense? Jennings looks like he's regressed from last season. Any SMU guys here feel free to explain and enlighten me.

too many turnovers and too many penalties. he may be pressing a bit at times because the defense can't get off the field.

I first saw them using that "Kick'em Stangs" chant back in 2015. While I understand it's something new, it's stupid and unnecessary.

Dykes sort of has a point. I assume the decision was made before SMU joined the ACC and certainly before last year’s success. I wonder if they’d feel the same if SMU had moved up and been successful earlier. I assume it would sell out regularly in the current landscape. Still a really bad and sad decision.

This won't be the last time SMU and TCU play. Guarantee they'll play again sometime randomly next decade.

P.S. Kick 'em Stangs is dumb

¿What was wrong with…

Close, Craig James famously said, "I killed 5 Hookers, Cokeheads!"

Iron Skillet is gonna be one for the ages man. Both these teams are gonna ball out one last time against each other. Guess the winner gets to keep the skillet forever?

little brother was heavily outclassed and is a less physical team than TCU; would have been a larger gap because the refs didn’t even review the TCU TD that was called out of bounds

Most likely will get misplaced like last time when no one knew where it was for years and more importantly no one thought about it.

I'm not saying anything I'm just going to use this as a placeholder.

Bring back the OG slogan:

Ponies

Polos

Porsches

Probation

It doesn’t need to be brought back. That’s  the reality for a good number of the frat guys at SMU.

Oh. Wait.

We're crushing it again?

We haven’t beaten a team with a winning record yet. The 20 game conference winning streak (regular season) is nice though. I’ll be at the Miami game.

I should get some sort of compensation for sitting through both this and the Kentucky game last week. Both teams deserved to lose.

Getting into the ACC was a bit surprising, but that was just money. I would NOT have expected to have wins over Clemson, FSU and Miami in your first 1.5 seasons in the league. I know the whole league is pretty mid, but still surreal

Okay so we lost to Wake. Shit happens. Who amongst us has not lost to Wake Forest in football?

I was just thinking this. We whipped FSU's ass last year, should have beat Clemson in the ACCCG, went on the road and got them back and now just beat Miami. We also won @ Louisville last season.

And Lashlee got a fat extension. Hopefully he is actually the right guy.

SMU may be a top 10 job in the country right now. Absolute money recruiting location, elite facilities, chill fucking fanbase that just dumps money into the program. Sick campus. Great big city environment where you can enjoy your money.

Why would Lashlee leave unless one of the big jobs opens up? And no PSU and Florida aren't "big jobs".

Fun seeing them rush the field (from the tv). I remember storming the court when hoops and Jeryl Sasser beat Fresno State (with Tark).

Fun day at Ford. First quarter weather was shitty but by the 4th it was perfect. Big, unexpected win.

Was at the game...an absolute blast.

Miami fans are a bit...odd.

4 rows in front of me was a guy somewhere between late 40's and mid-50's if I had to guess, maybe late 50's. Gray hair.  Wearing Miami Wide Receiver gloves the whole game, and basically acting like he was about 20.  Total nut job.

Can't believe how big a pussy Cristobal was to take a knee with nearly 30 seconds left.  I was rooting for SMU, so I didn't care, but I'm like, "damn, you have one of the best QB's in the country and you aren't even going to try and take a shot to win it in regulation?"

That INT in OT was glorious...I was near the top of the stands at about the 5 yard line and had a perfect view of it.  You knew it was about to be intercepted about halfway though the ball's flightpath.

driving up to the game i was telling my wife that their fans would probably be pretty similar to ours being another small-ish private school.  that was not the case, at least from what we saw.

Yeah, not even close.

Starting to think a Venn diagram of Dolphins fans and UM fans is a single circle.
