I don't blame her one bit.  Such a terribly run Olympics.  How can she perform her best when the vault is that crowded?

sure, it's inevitable but nothing is official yet.

Despite Pound's statements, International Olympic Committee vice president Anita DeFrantz says she has not heard anything about the games being postponed.

"If that is the case, then you know more than a vice-president of the International Olympic Committee," she said, referencing Pound's announcement. "It would be news to me."

The IOC executive board reportedly spoke Sunday, but allegedly did not rule out starting the Olympics on time, the only thing not on the table was canceling the games completely. While they did discuss potentially postponing it, DeFrantz says no decision has been made.

You just have to go with Richard Pound, right?

Your mother is a close acquaintance of Dick Pound

I'm not sure how many people actually care other than this means that more shit will probably be cancelled, like Wimbledon, the Tour de France, and probably the US Open (tennis) and all of the golf majors... then things like preseason football.

And maybe the MLB, MLS seasons and possibly even college & NFL football.

The Olympics are such an afterthought that it's more symbolic than an actual loss.

Right now its Just a rumor by a reuters twitter reporter with 27K followers, but the 2021 Tokyo games might be cancelled.

Depressing if true.

Winter olympics in China just 13 months away....they're on cancellation notice too.

Yeah, things will be back to some semblance of normalcy by July but not enough for a massive event like a Summer Games.  Bummed to hear that they'll cancel them altogether.  Nothing wrong with 2022 Tokyo, 2024 Paris, 2028 Los Angeles.  But they must have their reasons.

One solution I saw would be to have a remote olympics. Each sport held in a different city around the world. Number of athletes, officials, and staff would be manageable for each location. Organizing that endeavor may be a bit much though.

I know Olympics aren't supposed to be a political event, but boycotting the Chinese Olympics wouldn't cause me to give a solitary fuck.

Interesting idea, but the best athletes rise to their best when they go head to head against the best.

We're trying to squash the pandemic and not pour gas on it by going back to the source of it.

They would be doing that, just not in the same geographical location as the best athletes in other sports.

Other downside for the athletes is no sex-fueled Olympic Village if all the events are spread out around the world.  Just you, across the hall, from your opponent, ordering hotel porn.  Not judging.

I wonder how many athletes for whom a 3-year delay, will age them out of their events?

I don’t think there’s a max age limit for any event, but there are certainly events like women’s gymnastics where the athletic competitiveness window is very small. Some US Olympic qualifiers already happened last year before the shutdown and those qualifiers were told they will keep their spot on the Olympic team. So yeah who knows what kind of competitive shape they’ll be in by the time the Olympics actually happens

No, I didn't mean max age limit.  I meant like somebody just misses their peak physical window.  Some medal events in certain sports, 80% of the participants are all within 2 years of age of one another.  In some sports, you can be just as good at 38 as you were at 18.  In others, you either compete at 26, or you don't get another chance.

But yeah, I'd be bummed out mostly about missing out on the olympic village.  and then the stuff about the medals.  and the endorsement money that won't be coming in.  Probably in that order.  And then down the list, some shit representing my country.  The whole opening ceremonies would have just been the announcer stating the Covid-19 rates in that particular nation.

I know someone who missed their window because of the boycott in 1980.  #1 ranked person in their sport for 3 years or so.  Bad injury a few years later and that was it, no Olympics.  I will make fun of Florida with the best of them, but I applaud giving the athletes in the less popular sports their opportunity to compete.

Just as long as Serena Williams doesn't go, I don't care if the Olympics are held or not.

Once NBC turned the Olympics into an international soap opera that also featured some athletic events, I stopped giving a shit about the Olympics.

(That was back in the '90s.)

I would have watched the men's soccer, but our 3rd string didn't qualify, so fuck it all.

The online streaming of the Olympics NBC offers is generally good and they don’t show any narrative driven spotlight pieces on the athletes. I agree nbc Olympics coverage on primetime is unwatchable and feel like they are produced by the same team behind Americas Got Talent.

Also, Serena isn’t a threat whatsoever to win a medal so don’t worry about her

I know that Serena isn't a threat, I just feel for the girl who would miss out because Serena's ranking is inflated due to COVID math.

Serena won't be able to bring her daughter, so she hopefully won't go. (She's hinted at that.) She's likely retiring at the end of this year, with Federer, and she would like one last hurrah!, but she's had plenty of hurrahs, so she should get the fuck out of here.

If NBC's streaming costs anything, then I won't be seeing what they're showing.

You don't remember the triplecast from the 92 games in Barcelona?

I was too young to have any remembrance  of that one. Earliest olympics I can remember was the 96 Atlanta Olympics, in particular the moment Muhammad Ali lit the torch

I remember this because a friend had cable.

Also flew to Paris in mid August a d met up with a couple of buddies who had gone to the Olympics and then travelled around Spain and southern France before returning to Paris where one flew home and then I went with the other to visit his relatives in The Netherlands.

My first trip across the pond. (Free round trip first class from DFW to Heathrow, the rest was on me.)

No. I do not have a fan club. Nor should I. I just post here because it makes me happy. No idea about anyone else. It’s weird anyone would think I have a fan club or even want one. I just figured after all these years of being me y’all finally tolerated me?

Oh, shit. Emily Lee just took a nasty fall during her floor exercise and hurt herself. She had to stop and be helped off the floor. That was rough.

That looked painful. Doing a double backflip or whatever she did  and landing directly on your knee seems like it would hurt.

We have a solid girls Olympic team. Curious about the guys though. The rings…we have one that is outstanding.

I remember watching Kerri Strug hurting her ankle on the vault and then vaulting again to win gold for the U.S. in the ‘96 Olympics. That was one of the bravest performances I’ve ever seen.  But this was worse. Emily tried to get up to resume her routine and you could tell right away that she couldn’t go and she just sat down in pain. I haven’t been able to find any update on her injury.

Strug is an all-timer for sticking that landing on a bum wheel.

Yep. And as I recall Bobby Hill had a huge crush on her.

Might possibly see the fastest women's 400mH ever run in just a few minutes. Happened last time Muhammad and McLaughlin went at it (Doha 2019).

Later, the men's 200m will feature a 17-year-old who broke Usain's bolt U18 record a month ago with a time of 20.11 seconds ... and then eclipsed that last night with a time of 19.88. Pretty incredible.
