Any suggestions?   Looking for something to use to keep groups in touch during this.

What's the purpose, personal or business?

Slack is more geared towards business integration, whereas Discord is for personal use. Also, do you need more moderation and security around your channels and who can join and see what's going on, or want it to be more organic? Do you want each team to have it's own workspace? Also, do you want users to have a single sign on?

Here's a good breakdown: https://zapier.com/blog/slack-vs-discord/

back in my days, we just walked uphill both ways to get to a computer terminal to use IRC

Might also want to look at Microsoft Teams. Not that it's better, just another alternative often mentioned alongside those two. FWIW, I use both Slack and Discord and don't have a strong preference either way.
