Classic movies from the 80s, 90s, and 00s to force your kid to watch

Featured Replies

Now that we all have a lot more time at home with our kids, I'm interested in what list everyone has of movies that they have made their kids watch.

I've got this list so far,

  • Back to the Future
  • Princess Bride
  • Bill and Ted
  • Jurassic Park
  • Karate Kid
  • Goonies

The Rocketeer

ET

Labyrinth

Flight of the Navigator

Raiders of the Lost Ark

a buddy of mine has three boys aged 4, 7, and 9.  got them to watch this about a month ago.  they were glued to the screen.

Probably shouldn't "force" your kids to watch a movie, but let's assume they're willing participants.

  • October Sky
  • Ghostbusters
  • Beetlejuice
  • Hoosiers
  • Field of Dreams

Off the top of my head. I'd throw Three Amigos and Raising Arizona in there but maybe your kids wouldn't get it.

To add to the original OP's list:

Ferris Bueller

The Blues Brothers

My kid (7) loves jurassic park (even the new ones). At the start of each school year when they do those back to school pictures where they ask what you want to be he says ‘paleontologist’ which he is convinced involves training dinosaurs.

Breakin'

Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo

Rad

Thrashin'

North Shore

Flash Gordon

Twister

Big Trouble in Little China

Getting my kids (14 and 12) back tonight for the first time in 3 weeks. Been working through movies with my son over the last 6 months or so. That will continue now.

I’ve been wanting to watch Better off Dead and Cannon Ball Run with my 15 yo but can’t find either of them on the streaming services

I think we have knocked all these off your list but KK

my 9yo daughter was WTF-ing all through Bill and Ted and generally confused.  The scenes with Missy (no, call me mom) were a little awkward.

BTW, the list of "classic" movies we've made our kids watch is actually quite long.  These are just some of the ones they've watched multiple (some would say an excessive number of) times.

I can't help but notice this thread hasn't been melded with the one about where/when the movie in which we saw our first tits.

If you watch the Breakin’ movies you would be doing yourself a disservice to not watch Krush Groove.

Last of the Starship Fighters

Dragonslayer

Lucas

Can't Buy Me Love

Last American Virgin

My Bodyguard

Stripes

The Lost Boys

I have indeed. Good soundtrack though IMO not as entertaining as the Breakin’ anthology

I'm not seeing Fandango listed. It's like I don't even know you people anymore. Bunch of weenies.

Edited by RPM

Might Ducks 1,2,3

Honey I Shrunk the Kids

Beethoven

Harry and the Hendersons

Mrs Doubtfire

Dennis the Menace

Hook 1991

Jumanji 1995

Willy Wonka

Oh shut the fuck up you pussy.

Naked Gun series

Airplane!

Hot Shots 1 & 2

Not from your time frame, but Monty Python Holy Grail also.

Within the last few months, my son (he's 12) and I have watched Aliens and DIe Hard. Oddly, he's never seen Top Gun. Maybe we need to knock that one out this weekend.

Fandango is a little deep for a kid, no?

Depends on the kid. I think 12+ would like it, it's a buddy film. Truman Sparks will have them in tears. They'll understand the rest on repeat viewings.

Dancer, Texas Pop. 81 is another one 12+ will enjoy.

My kids love MST3K. Amazon Prime is currently streaking one of the greatest episodes ever: Space Mutiny.

Just recorded Top Gun to watch this weekend.  Also recording Life is Beautiful in a couple days.

Stand by Me

Coming to America

The Pink Panther (Peter Sellers and Steve Martin)

Holy Grail

and, of course, My Cousin Vinny

Lost in America

The Scout

Breaking Away

The Rookie

Smokey and the Bandit

Bad News Bears

i know a few may be in 70’s

We're going to attempt Close Encounters of the Third Kind tonight. I predict the line of "I'm bored" will be thrown out on more than one occasion.

Yeah, but if watch it WITH mashed potatoes, imagine the fun.  It really is a very clever movie.

Before I was paid to speak french...I was a mapmaker.
