I bought some cloth masks with behind-the-head ties. Not that I'll be wearing them that long, but I've seen plenty of pictures of doctors and nurses with ears rubbed raw from elastic.

Depends on how long you are going to be wearing the mask. Short jaunt in and out of the store? Around the ears is most comfortable and quickest.

Having to wear for longer? An hr or more? That elastic starts to dig at your skin around the ears . Can also be uncomfortable if it is elastic and just running over the top of the head. The elastic makes for a better seal, but over the long run ties that go around the base of the head, top of the neck and then the other tying at the top of the head provides for longer comfort. Kinda one reason why they are used in the OR. There they are needing coverage for the face but not so much need a perfect seal. This obviously is a bit of a different situation and the tighter seal is better to protect the wearer and those around them.

At my work, we have gotten to the point of having to wear one for 12 hrs even while at a computer or out on a call. Tight elastic for a entire shift is no bueno.
