starting this on lulz because I don't want it to get into the covid/politics/other bs stuff. and I think it's funny.

what the FUCK are these sign language people thinking when they're on tv? I can't even focus on what the speaker is saying due to looking at their goofy expressions they make while doing their signs. EVERY FUCKING ONE.

neg away.

I am convinced that they're all just kind of winging it, and the deaf community at large is simply comprised of elite-level Charades players, and not that American Sign Language is actually a standardized method of communication.

Apparently the Broken Lizard guys we're doing a show and they were concerned that the material is going to be too raunchy for the sign language person so they discussed some of the jokes with the interpreter beforehand and she assured them it was okay. As they were performing they noticed the audience was laughing but it was a slight delay to their punchlines and they realized it was due to what the interpreter was actually signing. They decided to go completely over the top with it and kept throwing more raunchy words for her to sign. They thought it was funny so they included it in their new show Tacoma FD.

I took this video with my iPhone probably 3 years ago so I could share it with someone. Obviously, I didn’t delete it.

A huge part of sign language is facial expressions to convey tone

In the word of sign language this man stands alone at the top of the mountain due to his huge balls

I'm glad I'm not the only one.  I mentioned to the wife last night while watching the news that now I can't not watch the interpreters.  It seems that their facial expressions go well beyond the tone of the speaker in many cases.

Why even show the interpreter on TV at all? Closed captioning seems to have that covered.

Because the asl nazis will say you're trampling on their culture and language without it.

The guy in Oklahoma is hilarious and I used to think distracting, but his story is actually kind of neat. He's actually deaf himself and receives signs from another person. They explain that he can convey better to the deaf community than the first interpreter. He also has a good sense of humor about it.
