Texas recruited 'the modern-day linebacker' in Morice Blackwell

By. JEFF HOWE Jun 18

247Sports Director of Scouting Barton Simmons recently told Horns247 he views Blackwell as a prospect who checks a lot of boxes for what it takes to thrive at the linebacker position in college and beyond.

“He's 6-1, he's in the 200-pound range, but he's got outstanding length,” Simmons said. “He plays safety for his high school. I've heard of him running really well for his high school coach's clock.

“That's the kind of athleticism and body type that is the modern-day linebacker.”

It wasn’t too long ago that the 6-foot-1-inch, 196-pound Blackwell would’ve been viewed as too small to hold up at the second level in a Power Five league. However, data collected and presented by 247Sports national analyst Charles Power on the last 27 off-the-ball linebackers taken in the NFL draft suggests Blackwell is the kind of prospect who fits in with where the game is trending.

“To recap,” Power wrote, “the average top linebacker draft pick in recent years is around 6-foot-2, 215 pounds with a 4.61 40-yard dash, 4.36-second shuttle and 35.1-inch vertical jump.”

If the purpose is to project prospects to the collegiate level, why is the NFL draft important in the recruiting rankings process? As Simmons put it, studying the draft gives those in charge of ranking and rating recruits a much better idea of which players tend to emerge as high draft picks, a group from which college football’s best players usually reside.

“We work really hard to study the results of the NFL draft because that's ultimately where we should take our cues and what we value in the recruiting process,” Simmons said. “In studying the NFL draft and studying the results, it's important for us to look at not what those guys' traits are as NFL draftees — 22-year-old seniors in college — but what they were like as prospects.

This is the major deficiency in the 247 rankings model. Glad to see they're adjusting.

Well I'm a fucking moron. Becuase I went with "There's no way a career backup with another year is going to declare for the draft, right?"
