April 13, 20187 yr On the old site I had asked for help, I can’t go find the recs. Old AirPort Extreme has been giving me problems lately (keeps showing flashing Ted light for no reason - it’s old). What should I replace it with? Connecting TV, AppleTV, laptop, iPad and a couple phones. It’ll be in the middle of my house that’s about 2800 sq ft.
April 14, 20187 yr Any dead/weak spots in the house wifi. We're about 2,500 sqft and have been really happy with 3 google wifi units. Our cable internet originates in a corner bedroom downstairs. So I have another one downstairs and one upstairs. The mesh setup is great. You sound like you have an Apple family. So maybe there's something in that ecosystem that does the same. Otherwise, the Google stuff is super easy to set up, has good speed, and works well.
April 14, 20187 yr I just replaced my slow Att internet with high speed Comcast and upgraded to an Arris SB8200 router and an Eero wifi system. The whole thing was easy as shit to set up, reduced my bill, made my kids quit complaining (about the Internet at least), and porn videos quit buffering. I tried using an AirPort Extreme once and the apple stuff just doesn't play nice with other equipment. Edited April 14, 20187 yr by NeverMarryAStripper
April 17, 20187 yr Just replaced my NETGEAR R6700 Nighthawk AC1750 last night with a NETGEAR Nighthawk X6 AC3200. Throughput is tons better. There was a firmware update from Netgear on my old that stopped Amazon/Alexa from working. My throughput is tons better. Ended getting a Refurb unit from Amazon. My home is 3600 SQ Ft with a basement no issue with connectivity anywhere in the house.

Very easy to set up and works great. We switched from an Apple airport with several airport expresses and have had no problems using our Apple products on the Google system.

They had some POS Belkin that was 10 years old and wouldn’t find and connect anything to the same network (AirPrint for instance). The Netgear was easy to set up. They’re about to move from a 3k sq ft house to a 5k sq ft house though. They will probably never get an Alexa.
April 18, 20187 yr Interesting. Because the WiFi AP they give you w Google fiber is complete shite. I have a Netgear R7000 cause it will switch gigabit speeds.. it's ok, but not super impressed overall. Parental controls don't work as advertised, the 5ghz is janky, and logging is non existent. I'm considering a Ubiquiti system, or maybe flashing to an open source firmware first to try it out. That comes w it's own headaches though..
April 18, 20187 yr I just ordered a Nighthawk X6 AC3000 R7900. I hope my experience is better than yours. I currently using the U-verse router / modem combo. I also ordered a Netgear Powerline PLW1010 so I could get an Ethernet connection for my AV receiver and extend my WiFi to my back porch. We’ll see. I ordered both through amazon warehouse because they had a special 20% off on some networking stuff.

The firmware was ancient and setup was a pain, but once I updated the firmware it ran like a champ. Of course had to reset to factory defaults to get into the router.
