Even if they can't afford them for every patrol Officer, they can certainly get some for the SWAT team. I suspect they have them but every single one of them on this event suddenly quit working at the exact same time. Because wearing body cameras might tip people off that they were cops. They were in plain clothes because they didn't want anyone, especially the people inside, to know they were cops. At least not until they got shot at, at which point the unknowing people inside "violently attacked our officers".
May 21, 20205 yr Just want to point out that flamethrowers render the body camera question moot. Body armor probably ain’t gonna do a bunch for them either.

June 2, 20205 yr Author I feel like this one is being overshadowed and it’s every bit as outrageous as Mr Floyd’s murder. Last I saw NO ONE has been charged or even fired. They straight up murdered Breonna for no reason at all. And then arrested her boyfriend for trying to defend her. Any promising news?
June 2, 20205 yr I actually find this one way more outrageous than Floyd simply based off the fact of how many people had to completely fuck up or flat out lie to get cops outside her apartment serving a no knock warrant. Hopefully no one believes the one bad apple rhetoric at this point, but this case blows that out of the water. This case shows the rotten process from top to bottom.

And how is there not, in 2020, a sensor system where if the officer takes his weapon out of his holster, or any other non-lethal weapon or the handcuffs, that it automatically turns his body camera on and it cannot be shut off...period. After these protests and riots are over, they're gonna have a real hard time convincing mayors, police oversight commissions, and juries of the old line of bullshit, "Uh yeah, just before we entered the premises...my body camera underwent a software update." So many of their old tactics are no longer going to fly. Y'all had a good run though, hope all the murder and evidence planting was worth it.

There is such a feature available but there are issues with it (beyond just hiding potential evidence) that make it clunky and not worth using at this time. There is even technology available that would turn on the cameras based on increased heart rate read from a "FitBit" type device, but the Unions would flip the fuck out if any department tried to implement that. 1 hour ago, dingleberryswitzer said: It's 2020. Memory is cheap. An SD card big enough to film and ENTIRE 8 hour shift can be had for $50. Storage is far less of an issue on these devices than batteries. Getting through a 12 hour shift on a single charge where the camera is recording nonstop is not quite available yet. You can make the batteries bigger, but then the device becomes bulkier and much more difficult to keep attached to the Officer. The proliferation of 5G cellular networks will greatly enhance current functionality of these cameras and add a whole lot more because video offload will be occurring in real time rather than just when the camera is in a vehicle dock or dock inside the station. Where storage becomes an issue is on the back end. If you have 100 Officer running around recording full 1080 HD video on 12 hour shifts, that shit has to be stored somewhere. That adds up to petabytes real fucking quick and that is not cheap like the aforementioned SD card. Then you get into retention requirements. The VAST majority of body cam video is completely worthless time of the camera pointing at their steering wheel or their lunch, etc. Somehow that has to get filtered out and some lawyer and records retention specialist has to get involved in that discussion. It's fascinating technology and will continue to improve. I am of the opinion that there should be a federal mandate that any Peace Officer is required to wear one.

Quote When we asked our Facebook fans which single piece of tactical gear they would add to their police-issued equipment, regardless of cost, we got some great responses, both serious and far-fetched, to say the least. It was remarkable how many people wanted Chuck Norris on call — and how many departments still aren't issuing body armor or TASERs. While it was difficult to pick through them, we selected 20 of the best (and most humorous) answers. Tell us your favorite, and add your own equipment suggestions in the member comments below! A Surefire weapon light. For obvious reasons. - Zachary M. Levine Exterior Vest because of the heat... would be nice to cool off once in a 12-hour shift - Paul Sweeney-Hennessy To make the M-4 framed .308 semi automatic-rifle with collapse stock standard issue. This will give officers an almost fare chance in a gun fight. - Bruce LaBier The Easy Button. - Timothy Polley A bullshit detector 3000. - Christopher Lee Adams RCB batons. They are effective and don't take up space on a duty belt. - Robert Hawkins Night Vision glasses. - Jesse Steve Brown A portable radio that worked for more than 60% of the time and provides clear transmissions. Ugh. - Jonathan Bruno Tranquilizer gun. Just put them to sleep and let them wake up in the jail cell. - David Moon Armored patrol cars since most of the time we use them for cover. - Ben Hignight Tactical vest carrier so it's easier to carry all my crap on patrol. - Tim Barr TASER, it simply is the best option to have in a variety of situations. - Isaac John Gerami A Batman duty belt with 007 devices on it. Better yet maybe just the Chuck Norris round house, that handles everything. - Mike Kinzel A crystal ball...since its such an inconvenience to ask questions to the important lives of civilians. - Marcelo Pirez Personal video recorder. Lapel mounted. I would want it for personal debriefing and for evidentiary purposes. - Christopher Matthiae Body armor. Seriously. They still haven't provided any. - Jay Ó Tuathail Some of those hidden suspenders for my duty belt, to save my back. Injured backs kill more careers than bullets or crashes. - Werkin Formy Paycheck Thermal imaging camera/night vision. - Ed Kienzle I work alone in a rural area so a second officer to patrol with would be nice. - Matt Wagner Bulletproof pants. - Executive Edge Private Security https://www.policeone.com/police-products/tactical/articles/facebook-forum-top-20-must-have-tactical-gear-options-x4uCvwCbt4nJjuzW/ Edited June 3, 20205 yr by Cajun And #15 is interesting. They can see where my limbs are damn near turned from my body, numerous bones fractured numerous times, where my arms are flailing about like noodles, and they can keep watching all the way up until other people walk up to my corpse and freak the fuck out at what it looks like. But a lot of these cops seem to have really expensive cameras that accidentally turn themselves off when they get out of the car.

I talked with a friend in HPD and he said they lowered the standards to HS diplomas for new police. June 8, 20205 yr I also remember a story about a no-knock raid resulting in a flash grenade blowing up in a baby's crib a few years back, leaving the baby with 2nd or 3rd degree burns. That didn't get much attention either outside of maybe Georgia, or Tennessee, or where ever it took place. Wrong door no-knock raids seem like the most flagrant of violations. You'd think these types of stories would get more attention than almost any other. I guess the lack of video corroboration prevents it from being an issue that really catches fire.
