August 11, 20232 yr @Baboontyme any updates? News footage of people sleeping on the floor at the airport in Maui surrounded by water bottles and mountain dew cans. I didn't see any Michigan State green so I am hoping you and the family got on your flights to Arizona.
August 11, 20232 yr Coworker's sister had to evacuate by sailboat and took 4 families with them the other day. Their home is gone completely.

I assume those sleeping in the airport were unable to find a hotel. We've been in an Airbnb in Kihei the past two nights. The host worked with me, very compassionate. Family is on a noon flight, I am on a 2 pm. Not expecting any hiccups but who knows. The resort says they will pack up our things and ship them to us at no cost when it is safe to go back and they have power. Got some cash for my wife and I was able to add my Amex on her phone to Google Pay.

Good learning experience for your kids in adaptability, resilience, and compassion. Glad y'all are all safe.
August 11, 20232 yr Update bc I'm sitting in a parking lot on the highway back into town. They are letting residents and hotel guests with reservations back into town you retrieve their things starting at noon. Family is on their flight Phoenix bound. Sw rebooked me at 4 but I'm not going to make it I don't think. The adventures continue. I hate to be a burden on these folks but I think getting our shit myself is probably less of one than having to have someone box everything up and ship it.
August 11, 20232 yr Nice of you to not want to put them through any unnecessary trauma. Hopefully, this incident has taught you to always leave a note in case of unforseen circumstances...
August 12, 20232 yr I made it. It was horrible beyond words. Stunning, even after looking at everything online and on the news.
August 12, 20232 yr Holy fuckballs. New fire in Ka'anapali across from Honua Kai and the Westin properties. People being evacuated. Reading it's 80% contained. Good God can they please catch a break?
June 10, 20241 yr Headed there in July. The Southwest tickets were too cheap to pass on. Looking at Airbnb’s with a beach access and view. Kihue and north Lahaina seem the most reasonable. Going with two active kids, so will do a lot of hiking, snorkeling, and maybe some easy surfing. Help!
June 10, 20241 yr Stayed in Kihei, no beach view but literally 100 yards from doorstep to sand. Really enjoyed the area, convenient and good beach setup.
June 10, 20241 yr If you stay in Kaanapali, or Napili or Kapalua, you are going to have to drive on the bypass overlooking Lahaina every time you do an excursion away from where you are staying. That is pretty depressing, at least to me. The Honoapilani Highway that goes around the North end of the island is not really navigable as a way to travel to Kahului and other parts of the island. I would look at Kihei and Wailea personally. https://www.instagram.com/reel/C8Ad8cayrw3/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

The beaches are mostly better on the west side (other than Makena aka big beach which is my personal favorite). Kihei water is pretty mid (by Hawaii standards) unless the conditions are right. That said there are some great little ones down the street throughout Wailea/Makena. If you haven’t been before and plan on exploring the entire island Kihei is much more central as a jumping off point. snorkeling: Honolua bay or Ahihi are fucking primo hiking: Waihee Ridge is great if you don’t want to go to Hana to hike. Otherwise Pipiwai out there. Surfing: depends on experience but if in Kihei The Cove is right in town and where most of the lessons are. Guardrails or Thousand Peaks if a bit more experienced. July 19, 20241 yr Currently staying up north of Lahaina in a condo, beachfront, about a 10 minute drive from Lahaina. Honolua Bay on the north side of Maui has some of the better snorkeling areas on this side of the island. The place can get pretty crowded and there’s no sand on the beach. It’s just rocky area with some branches that have fallen where you can sit. Not kid friendly for the young kids not able to snorkel yet. Wife, 8 year old and I went to Kihei beaches at the beginning of the trip but it was too choppy/windy to snorkel. Great beaches down in Kihei for little kids and families who just want to bake in the sun. Haven’t ventured to many other beaches though. Haleakala is currently closed due to wildfires that broke out last week. My wife and I did that about 10 years ago when we honeymooned here but we wanted to take the boy. I’ve done Hana before when I was a kid. Lahaina is just a sad town right now. Apparently they’re making progress but there’s still burnt buildings standing. On the inland side of the highway, they have cleared the land and looks like they’ll start construction within the next few months hopefully. Really enjoyed the trip. We’re leaving Sunday. Best part: didn’t pay for shit. Worst part: sister-in-laws were here. See Holiday thread for further info.
July 29, 20241 yr Got to condo in Kihei last night. Morning on the beach does not suck. Hank_Hill, any recs on where to rent some snorkel gear, paddle board? Any recs on getting fresh fish to cook at home or restaurants?
July 29, 20241 yr If anyone is ever around for this it’s a great time and Marty is a great guy and musician

July 31, 20241 yr We had bad luck on our Hana day. Rained hard the whole we there, so we didn’t stop along the way and couldn’t really see much. Ate at a food truck in Hana. Went to the Venus Pools and the locals were freaking out because of the flash flood warnings, and implored us not to dive into the water with our kids. So we then went to the national park down the road and hiked the bamboo forest and down the the 7 sacred pools. Again, no swimming allowed because of flash flooding / water flow, which totally made sense. Drive back was much better, but we had to haul ass to beat the sunset (did not want to drive the one lane switchbacks at night). Came home, drank a Maui IPA, cooked some fresh marlin, and passed out.
July 31, 20241 yr South Maui Fish Market - found them on Reddit. They sell fresh fish that their captains catch out of a trailer. I got Ahi and Marlin. Unbelievably good. https://www.southmauifishco.com/about

Bay. 👀 Also bumping this, because it appears that I will be headed to Maui next Sunday through Wednesday evening. I have never been to Hawaii, but I am absolutely NOT going to a Luau. (I’m sure that they are as authentic as a tango show in Buenos Aires.) No idea where I’m staying. My sister is bringing me along because I helped her out a couple of times this year and our birthdays are 2 days apart. She’s been before, so I will defer to her. Maybe I will rent a surfboard for a couple of hours at a crowded touristy beach that good surfers avoid. 🤷♂️ 🌊🏄♂️🌴🍹📕🐠🍣🍤
July 7Jul 7 Bumping this thread. Headed to Kaanapali next week. Anyone been there lately? Is anything happing yet in Lahaina? Also looking for general recs on things to do with the family which is comprised of me and the Mrs and three hs/college age girls who mostly will want to sleep late and not do anything physical. But we will make them do things that are worth it. Appreciate any recommendations. It’s been 20+ years since I was there last.
July 7Jul 7 I don't have much for you. A day each for Haleakala and Road to Hana. We did sunset rather than sunrise and it was great. We didn't get to do the road but did make one of the first stops at Twin Falls and that was cool, the girls will like that. We took the ferry to Lanai one day and went to the cat sanctuary. I'm not a huge cat person but the rest of my family is and they enjoyed it. I don't know the status of the marina in Lahaina. People like Duke's in Ka'anapali in front of Honua Kai. We had breakfast there one day and it was pretty decent. We did Old Lahaina Luau. It survived and is open last I checked. It was a great experience for us, not cheap though. Have fun. July 8Jul 8 Try to spend as much with local artists, vendors, restaurants as possible. Tip well. The locals are still struggling mightily from the fire, and money is one of the few ways tourists are able to help.

You might already be there, but we were just there in May with our two kids who are younger than yours (elementary aged). We were also in Kaanapali (Hanua Kai). The central part of Lahaina is still mostly closed off but still tons to do in the area. Road to Hana was a highlight though definitely a long day. Worth it. Make sure to book Waiʻānapanapa entrance ahead of time. Highly recommend the Shaka tour app for that drive -- lots of great info and good tips on where to stop and where to skip. Snorkeling was great. Just check out reports ahead of time. Even just snorkeling around Black Rock in Kaanapali for a couple hours we were able to see many sea turtles and tropical fish. Iao Valley was super close and easy and incredibly scenic. You can hike further up if the kids are up to it or just take in some of the views from the paved area. Driving up to see the Nakalele Blowhole is another easy excursion that you could do in the middle of a chill beach or pool day. We didn't do any of the high end restaurants, but people love Mama's Fish House and your kids might appreciate it more since they're older. Some of our more casual favorites were Maui Fish Market (take it to go and eat at the beach), Fruit Ninja, Leoda's. Two of my favorite meals were the Huli Huli Chicken stand at Koki Beach (on the Road to Hana) and the poke at Tobi's in Paia (we got it at the end of our Road to Hana day). We went to Duke's a couple times cause it was at our hotel and it was fine. Enjoy!
July 14Jul 14 If you're headed to the top of Haleakala, I'd recommend this place either before or after. https://hgsmaui.com/
August 8Aug 8 Saw this earlier today. Tomorrow (8/8) will mark two years since the fires. I still have somewhat of a hard time dealing with this, having watched it all unfold from up on the hill. I can't imagine what it would feel like to have been in the impact zone that day and/or to have had to deal with the aftermath over the past couple of years. Prayers up to Lahaina town. If you visit, please be respectful, don't book short term rentals from those who aren't local, and support local businesses. https://www.hawaiimagazine.com/lahaina-two-years-after-wildfires/
