Yeah, I used to go there after my longtime barber dating back to 1998 retired. The woman I started going to at Grooming Room left when most others did because a new person took over as manager for Grooming Room who was just awful. I wouldn't be surprised if that's the case.
July 29, 20223 yr Same experience here. I followed my barber from there to her new solo shop. She couldn't be happier (or busier) -- and I still get great haircuts.

August 1, 20223 yr Wife and I went to Brick & Bones down in Deep Ellum for brunch. I had the chicken and waffles and she had the tenders and mac n cheese. All were quite tasty. Bonus points for the atmosphere as I love a dive bar kind of aesthetic. The pics don’t really do it justice but, coming in from the bright heat outside to the very dark cool vibes of this place was a bonus. Kind of reminds me of Casino El Camino in Austin but slightly nicer. Looks like they are trying to replicate Eischen’s Bar in Okarche OK.
August 8, 20223 yr Picked up Ricky’s Hot Chicken from their Richardson location tonight for dinner. Chicken sandwiches and fries were great along with their comeback sauce. A bit of a sweeter hot chicken which is very tasty though I’d still put Hattie B’s as my personal local favorite. The chicken and waffles the kids got were also good. As you need a minimum $55 order to pick up, I also got their nugget sampler with all heat levels. I was smart enough to know not to try the hottest. My wife was not and had to chug some milk. Pick up is definitely the way to go as it is a TINY space. I had scheduled our order ahead and was able to walk right in and pick it up on time. There were probably around 20 people packed in that place waiting for theirs as I’m betting they had not though to order ahead.

I was still feeling that thing burning a hole in my stomach the next morning. She was fine of course. If you like spicy (I do), the "hot" there is just right.
September 30, 20223 yr Jr lived not far from Mike's when they lived over by Parkland, thought it was outstanding fried chicken.
October 12, 20223 yr Mike's chicken was packed for lunch today....A buddy whose opinion I trust said Mike’s is his favorite in town. I picked up some yesterday. Went with 2-piece white spicy with fries and slaw. Pretty good. Breast was a tad dry but overall it was very good. Will go back.Going to Roots tonight.

Somebody will need to correct me but I don't think Lucky's does bone-in chicken -- it's all chicken strips. The sandwiches use strips too. TBH Bubba's is no longer in my rotation. Hasn't for a long time. It makes me feel sick after eating because of the grease, I guess. I still love the rolls, though.

I cannot imagine giving up the biscuits and gravy. maybe the chicken, but I'll eat the biscuits and gravy on my deathbed.

The chicken just makes me feel like I've eaten a candle or something later. I still enjoy breakfast there though the floors and tables/chairs have this weird slick feeling to them. Still love the rolls.
October 13, 20223 yr We went to Roots Southern Table with a friend last night and holy fucking shit was that a great meal. Our friend and I split the family style chicken and Mrs C-Man got the redfish, which was damn good. There was nothing on the menu last night that I wouldn't have tried but I was there to eat duck-fat fried chicken. And it was fantastic. We started with Deviled Eggs (spectacular) and their twist on hummus (black eye pea/black bean) and then we ordered charred romanesco (broccoli) and the gruyere mashed potatoes as a side. They were out of Peach Napoleon for dessert so we went with the Orange Juice Cake, which was massive and was so good I ate way more than I should've and was uncomfortably full all night. I thought our friend and I were going to have a "draft" to see who took home the remaining pieces of chicken but she told us to take it all so we've got 4-5 pieces of leftover chicken and two biscuits in the refrigerator. We will definitely go back. Edited October 13, 20223 yr by C-Man

January 24, 20232 yr Was driving down Lemmon on my way to the office the other day and noticed that the old Einstein Brother's Bagels location near the Great American Hero is being transformed into a Lucky's Hot Chicken. Makes me wonder if the location across from SMU that's been "under renovation" for months is going to re-open as Lucky's or something else altogether.

Shug’s is opening in the Great American Hero spot. Pretty excited.
June 23, 20232 yr My parents were in town night before last so we took them to Roots along with my in-laws. Another fantastic meal. Completely different menu for the most part but everything we had was terrific -- chicken (of course), fried green tomatoes, fish, succotash, hoppin' johns, fried potatoes, peach salad (with goat cheese, prosicutto and candied pecans) and several desserts.
July 1, 20232 yr Lucky’s has already closed the location on Lemmon (old Einstein Brothers Bagels) after moving it from across from SMU. I don’t think it was even open for more than six months there.

It seems the hot chicken craze may be heading towards the same fate as the bank branch on every corner and stand-alone ER in every neighborhood.
July 6, 20232 yr Tend to agree on saturation, but I’m curious to see how Cookshack does in the mockingbird Jason’s deli anchored shopping center near Greenville (across from Taco Bell). It started in FW right before the pandy and seemed to thrive somehow, now they’re up to ~10 locations statewide. Good food, reasonable price, and very good/friendly service.
July 7, 20232 yr Between the chicken tender places, the hot chicken places, and the traditional fried chicken places, it feels like we are over saturated.

Hopefully only for the shitty ones like Lucky's, Dave's etc- I'm not even a fan of Hattie B's really. I'll pray for places like Ricky's though.
March 23, 20241 yr Ricky's for lunch today. Finally broke down and got the Birds Nest- a big ass order of fries topped with chopped up tenders, mac and cheese (instead of slaw, got that on the side), pickles, and sauce.
April 9, 20241 yr I had Brick & Bones the other night, and it was heavenly. I'll be moving right down the street from it in a few weeks. I guess I should just plan on being fat.
