  • Considering it is sung to the tune of "I've Been Working on the Railroad", shouldn't the Chinese students be the ones with the problem?

  • I'm a Trump hating liberal and hope the Republican party withers and dies before my children are of voting age.  That being said....  The song isn't racist. The bullshit 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon

I don't like some if the demands but I'm not a black athlete representing the University of Texas. I don't know what it's like to deal with the fucked up system that they've grown up under.  Fuck

The report isn't going to matter when this is all said and done.

You think the song will go away eventually, we get it.

That's progress.

And he is right, in a way! Sounds Keynesian to me, “In the Long Run we are all dead”.

Also, the Sun will expand into a red dwarf, the universe will expand to a great cooling (or collapse into a great thud)! So DD is technically correct! It will go away! LOL

Correct, although I think this will be more like what happened to Daniel Snyder in terms of speed.

I don’t see our advertisers pulling out and couple that with Dan Snyder always being a piece of shit

One thing for sure is David Dennison is very proud of how his politics works.

Yet.

Can we get the British tabloids in on this PR mess?

David Dennison believes institutions should be beheld solely to public perception. Quit engaging with him. If he believed his stated conclusions, he'd actually go the fuck away.

That's because they are. They depend on the public.

Traditions are important rituals are not. The EOT is a ritual; the tradition of Texas is much more than that. Sing or don't, who cares but believe in the tradition of Texas and work to add to it.

A school song is a tradition of Texas, not a ritual. Performing the song is a ritual after games.

The song itself is not important , the reason behind the singing is. It doesn't matter if its written by John Sinclair or Darude unless the artist or the lyrics subvert the entire reason you're singing in the first place. People get too hung up on the what of the singing and forget the why.

That's because they are. They depend on the public.

It depends on current students and athletes. If there’s a movement that wants it gone, it will be gone. It’s silly to think otherwise. Or that this report’s marks the end of it.

The Eyes represents a vulnerability that malcontented entities can continue to press.

At the point where the path of least resistance is clearly to end the song, that will be the course of action.

The pride and winning tradition of The University of Texas should not be entrusted to people working on railroads all day.

I asked a descendant of one of those railroad workers to do the math for me.

And someday we will no longer use oil & gas but today is not that day and therefore I will rejoice!

The Eyes of Texas are upon you and @David Dennison at least until you both are 6 feet under.

DD on his death bed, ‘i don’t give a fuck about my kids, brothers, sisters, dogs, etc.  I won’t miss them a bit.   I just wish I could live long enough to see that fucking song go away’

Apparently no record of Lee saying that, it was bullshit.  Or so the 55 pages indicate.

At a 1900 medical school meeting somewhere in the South, somebody said, "The Eyes of General Lee are Upon You."  (Duke Boys, maybe)

1911 Legislature attends a football game en masse, at UT, for the first time.  Song was sung then.  Then in 1915 by the women students as some sort of empowerment move.  Attached to WWI soldier stories as well.  Lots of positive connotations gonna be attached to the song in the report.  When Hispanic Civil Rights leaders march from Weslaco to Austin in 1966, they use the EoT as their marching song of choice.  Barbara Smith Conrad uses the song, at the encouragement of Harry Belafonte, as an empowerment tool when she's treated poorly.  40 separate recommendations made by myriad CSU's on campus in favor of it staying.

Lots of interesting history and background context.  The two dipshit donors in the Texas Monthly and DMN articles should be rightfully dismissed.

'Poet and Peasant' is also an interesting background color on the song.  Another nationwide story running tomorrow on CBS This Morning.  Commission handled it as good as can be expected.  Serious apologies are needed though to some current athletes who were horribly addressed by idiot alums who have no business speaking for the school. Once again, "Empowered Stupidity" strikes again in America.

CSU?

College, Schools, Units, (+ Departments).

Colleges at UT:  Education, Liberal Arts, Natural Sciences, et. al.

Schools at UT:  Business, Butler School of Music (Longhorn Band), Engineering, et. al.

Units at UT: Ransom Center, Blanton Museum of Art, Briscoe Center for American History (they did most of the research on the EoT materials), et. al.

Departments/Centers at UT (with some level of operational discretion):  Diversity & Community Engagement, Sports Leadership Initiative, et. al.

Will the band continue to play it or have we heard a live performance for the last time?

Either they will or we'll find new band members. There are 3-4 more people who want to be in LHB for every one in it today.

Brian could have clarified point #3 a little better (from the report)...

“The surviving contemporary accounts don’t allow a direct, definitive answer. Neither the printed program for the show nor reviews afterward identified cast members as specifically wearing blackface or not. No photographs from the show have been found.”

The song will stay until it is retired by the University. We can agree on that.

How many years will you continue to sing THAT song before you give up?
