So are the boosters more or less holding up at preventing symptomatic infection from Omicron? There’s seems to be a lot of breakthrough cases amongst those who have gotten the first round of shots but not as many breakthrough infections in people who’ve received a booster. At least that’s what I’ve gathered from anecdotal evidence from here and other boards and social media I peruse.

Anecdote… I’m boosted and I’ve been exposed to 2 people with the virus in the past couple weeks. And I mean prolonged sitting in a car with no masks type of exposure. I haven’t tested myself but I’ve yet to have any symptoms at all.

PSA for other posters that have kept up with this and other threads throughout the pandemic, go take a listen to the Peter Attia podcast that dropped yesterday.   He's a great resource for health/fitness/longevity topics in general and brings in experts on all different types of things (heart disease/lipids, cancer, testosterone, alzheimers, exercise, diet, etc. etc.) and this is a discussion with a couple of other doctors on the current state of Covid.  Recorded 12/27 so relatively current.  I'm only about 1/2 through so far but really good at putting things in perspective.  I.e., the measures we took at the beginning of the pandemic that were perfectly reasonable at the time when we knew next to nothing about the disease, severity, transmission, best course of treatment, etc. and why they don't make sense 18 months later.

Basically it's a lot of the same discussions we've been having the last few pages about the end game for all of this and you can sense their frustration with both the constant Covid Alarmists that want to shut everything down as well as the crowd that has pushed HCL and other remedies without any scientific basis.   Haven't gotten to it yet but think they are going to go in hard on the constant failures of messaging by health and other public authorities throughout the pandemic.

@BrazilHorn or anyone else, do you have a source for current and historical all-cause admission data in ATX area?

Why does the word for "head removal" sound so much like the word for squid?

Any idea where you got it?

Think at Christmas. 2 people were positive days later, but those 2 were never in close contact of wife or me. I did get my booster the 23rd so i wonder if it could possibly be a false positive. Have clinic visit in hour

Not that I am seeing in a cursory search of the googles.

Here are deaths through 1/1/2022 for Travis County. 4 deaths were recorded (bear in mind due to holiday weirdness this is for period of 12/27 to 1/1.

20 to 29 (1) - 1st death in this category since Mid November

40 to 49 (1)

50 to 59 (1)

70 to 79 (1)

Wife tested positive. Waiting on the rest of the family's results. Me and my son only have sore throats. My wife and daughter have a fever, chills, body aches and a cough

Was at an outdoor wedding with an indoor/outdoor reception last Thursday.  About 70 people at the ceremony/reception.  As of yesterday, about 25 or so people had tested positive.  Out of those 25, I think only 4 were unvaccinated and they are all under 8 years old.

Everyone in my family that went is negative, and we haven't experienced any reason for us to believe that we will eventually test positive from it (we have all had the virus and are all vaxxed).

Sucks. I would say that if one person in family has it it is highly likely all the rest do, just given how infectious this variant is. It is running through people like shit through a goose.

Rest up, and take care.

Dude down the street tested positive.  He said he caught it at their bayhouse before his family came down to join him for a weekend. They are a bit over cautious and decided he needed to quarantine without them for 2 weeks.

Fuckin a man - 2 weeks alone with no wife or kids at a bayhouse. This motherfucker is probably duck hunting and fishing every day.

is it too soon to award this year's MacArthur Genius Grants?  Because if it is, we need to at least set one aside for this dude for when award season comes.

Wife was supposed to start going back into the office next week. They were going to do flexible scheduling and let people go in at least 3 days and work from home for the other 2. Now they're delaying going back till February. She's actually a little upset as she'd like to go back some. I wouldn't mind that either, frankly. But maybe we can withstand the wave and then things will be better in February.

Closest you can get is the census here, from the state of Texas, updated daily.  See the tab for occupied beds, row for area O, which is the daily hospital census for the 5 county Austin area.  You'll see that total # of people in the hospital has not been increasing recently. I think the ICU census is probably a better proxy for what you're interested in though.  Not much there either. I'll have a post on that later when I get a chance.

The old lady briefly thought about calling in covid ... she was sick the first half of the Christmas break so logically she said she needed another week. :)

Completely agreed. Kids didn't go to school today and will miss this week. Luckily all the symptoms are mild so far

I read a different article on this last night with the similar title porn but when I read into it said that so far this strain was first discovered almost a month ago and is getting bullied by Omicron.  Probably why not a "Variant of concern"

Also, it just occurred to me that "Variant of Concern" would be a fucking metal band name.

Yep, Omicron saw it and wasn't impressed.

When has it been hard to defeat anything concerning France?

Might want to ask old dead General Cornwallis. Their fleet and troops at Yorktown comes to mind.

The old adage that you are best suited to fight and win the most recent war that just ended  - pretty much sums up French military history for decades....

stolen from Reddit. This dude graphs published covid data. It's a GREAT source for up to date status of hospitalization and deaths.

TLDR: Omicron hospitalization is increasing but deaths aren't rising, yet anyway.

Charts made in Excel and based on data from the Austin COVID-19 Staging Dashboard that covers hospitalizations in the Austin metropolitan statistical area (MSA). The past few days of hospital admissions have sent the Austin region soaring back into Stage 5 territory for its COVID-19 Risk-Based Guidelines.

The same trends are present statewide as reported by Texas DSHS. You can visualize that data on my Texas COVID-19 Hospital Resource Usage website. 14% of hospital beds and 23% of ICU beds statewide are currently occupied by COVID-19 patients. In the Austin trauma service area (TSA-O), 9% of hospital beds and 16% of ICU beds are used for COVID-19.

Over 81.0% of eligible residents of Travis County have at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. 70.1% are "fully" vaccinated with only 24.9% having received a booster.

--

As many other locations have reported, we're definitely seeing fewer "severe" COVID-19 cases compared to previous waves as evidenced by the number of people in the ICU. For much of the pandemic, the ratio of ICU inpatients to hospitalizations has been between 0.3 to 0.4. However, we're currently seeing that ratio fall below 0.25. So while Omicron is causing record-breaking daily cases and a scary number of new hospital admissions, it seems quite likely that most people are having relatively short stays.

It’s fascinating that a massive spike in cases coincides with a steep drop in deaths. That could result from several causes (time delay, earlier spikes killing off the vulnerable, etc.), but one possible reason is that the spike is Omicron and it swamped out the more deadly Delta. Essentially, a weaker but far more contagious disease is making a ton of people sick but saving them from death.
