Best college football head coach as a player (current or former):
Mike Gundy?

Spurrier gotta be up there with a heisman.
Effin heupel

Didn't see "former" in there. My answer was for current.

Spurrier won a Heisman Trophy.

Pat Fitzgerald was a monster LB in college. 2× winner of the Chuck Bednarik Award and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy in 1995 and 1996.

Being the unquestioned best defensive player in all of college football for two straight seasons is tough to beat.

Thats it, the end.  Next thread.

I dunno, seeing this guy from when he returned to his alma mater really makes you wonder. Wonder what, I'm not sure, but it sure does make you wonder.

Are we counting his NC as a coach?  Because he didn't win one as a player.  That said, he probably is the correct answer (although other Heisman winners did become coaches).

Pat Fitz if we limit it to current coaches.

He looks slimmed down.

Tyrone Wheatley, Morgan State

Also,

Ed McCaffery, Northern Colorado

Mike Minter, Cambell

Who?

It's tough to compete with a coach that won the Heisman trophy.  I would go with Scott Frost being a legitimate contender since he won a (split) national championship as a quarterback and then played six years in the NFL as a safety.  Still, a Heisman is tough to beat.

Probably still has to use towels to wipe his ass though.

Knute Rockne.

All American as a senior.

Helped unbeaten Notre Dame win at Army and at Texas.

Pat Sullivan won the Heisman. He led TCU to a SWC title*.
