July 4, 20205 yr I would only be in favor of this if the majority of Native Americans are behind the change and always have been..not white (or any other race) woketivists. Having said that, as a Cowboys fan I've alway referred to them as either Deadskins or Foreskins..no movement gonna change that[emoji39]

Maybe the majority of the ‘my great grandma was an Indian princess’ set don’t care so much. And that's what so many people fail to grasp. Even if it were true (and it's not) that "most Native Americans don't care about the term Redskins", it's largely because they're dealing with far more important things on a daily basis than what some rich white people decide to name their sports' team. Like surviving on the shitty stretches of land that our forefathers left them with little hope of change or true equality. Black people didn't care that they were underrepresented with Academy Award nominations 60 years ago. They had more pressing shit to focus on. We should consider it progress if/when the Native American community can focus its attention on the more superficial injustices.

July 4, 20205 yr So the National Congress of American Indians, an organization of tribal leaders from nearly every tribe in the US, supports the change. But 504 “self identified” Indians in a telephone poll and a UND grad some guy knows like the name so I guess we should just go with that, lol.

July 4, 20205 yr These are going to be some of those changes that seem really hard and painful but, pretty much a week after they're made, 75% of fans will either be happy about or stop caring about. 5-10% will wear the old gear at games out of spite, making this pointlessly awkward and divisive at the games.

Stanford and St Johns and several other teams already went through this. NFL fans can do the same. And it is so passed due and has been such a long and ridiculous discussion I think most will just be relieved to finally move on. Now if only we could move on from Dan Snyder.

Quote The name is a dictionary-defined slur, whether or not 10 percent of Native Americans or 50 percent of your co-workers or your favorite aunt acknowledge it. Numbers are neat and easy to understand. Identity and racism are messy and complicated. That disconnect comes through when you look closer at some of the participants of The Post’s poll. I spoke to many at the time. One woman who said she wouldn’t be offended if someone called her a “Redskin” had already been called “Pocahontas,” “Tonto” and “Kemosahbee.” Sometimes, groups need a helping hand after centuries of abuse and degradation.

I think making UND change away from the Fighting Sioux is an overreaction. It's an obvious homage. Same with the Illinois Illini. No offense intended clearly. The Redskins are on par with having teams called the Atlanta N*ggers, Seattle Chinks, or Miami Spics. It's completely beyond the pale (no pun intended) and has been for years. I can't imagine being butt hurt about this, but welcome to America 2020, where the Confederate flag has become fetishized by northern Conservatives, and the god damn President is using blatant Nazi imagery in his reelection campaign. Christ. And several Sioux tribes endorsed the Fighting Sioux name. One or two tribes threw a fit. I agree with you on Redskins. As for the last paragraph, seek help for your TDS.
