I guess the lawyers are out of town for the weekend, so they shall wait till they can come up with a convincing story to defend him on Monday?

I'm not sure it is him. Aki Ogunbiyi is only 6'4" and he's pushing 345lbs.

Jimbo’s filling all the holes through the portal in today’s signing day, right?

Spoiler

For the past four years, we have put together a behind-the-scenes piece after Signing Day for each class with some of the details we were not able to share while playes’ recruitments were still going on.

The 2023 class was a relatively small one for Texas A&M and there was not nearly the drama this year than in year’s past. We also shared a bunch on the boards at the time, so there are not a lot of details fans don’t know. But there are a few stories.

-The most interesting behind-the-scenes story this year has to do with one of the highest-ranked signees.

Rueben Owens was offered by A&M as a freshman and the Aggies were the one team that was consistently involved in his recruitment the whole time. It was always going to be a long process with him and it’s maybe actually a positive it didn’t happen, but he almost ended up on the commitment list much earlier than this past December.

In February of his sophomore year, Owens had seemingly been leaning toward Oklahoma for a while. But, he had decided that he was going to move on from OU. And, for whatever reason, he wanted to make an early commitment right then. If you remember, he committed to Texas that day. But that was not the original plan.

Owens had actually first called Jimbo Fisher that day to commit to the Aggies. However, Fisher was not able to answer his phone at the time for one reason or another. Owens waited a little bit but had decided he wanted to commit that day so, when he could not get in touch with Fisher, he called Texas and committed to the Longhorns.

A&M obviously wished at the time he had committed to them instead but they actually always felt pretty good about landing him in the end. He ended up decommitting from Texas four months later and, though there was also a long Louisville commitment in there as well, he ended up in Aggieland.

-Another player that came full circle was tight end Jaden Platt. The Aggies were seen as the leaders heading on his announcement in December 2021. But, he had actually silently committed to A&M before that. The Aggies ended up thinking they were not going to take a tight end, though, and it was a tough call for them to make. But, that’s why he announced for Stanford at the time. It all obviously worked out, though, as he flipped to A&M just before the Early Signing Period.

-This past August, A&M fans got some bad news when Bravion Rogers decommitted. And, after that, a ton of rumors started about other Aggie pledges decommitting as well. The two main names were Jayvon Thomas and Dalton Brooks.

Thomas had been committed to A&M since April and was saying he was solid. But, the rumors were still out there about him. Whether it was them or not, Thomas was upset at one of the other SEC schools heavily involved in his recruitment at the time because he believed the rumors were coming from them. Needless to say, that ended any potential chance of that school flipping him.

TCU also did get Thomas late in the process. The Frogs were confident they were going to end up with him. His official visit with them was cut to just a day though, due to the playoffs, so that was not ideal for them. But they still very much expected him to announce for them before the Early Signing Period. A&M was able to go in late and come from behind to get a huge win in keeping him in the fold, however.

-Speaking of the Bravion Rogers decommitment, a much, much bigger deal was made about it than was actually there. He had wanted an A&M offer for a very long time. He had camped and it had not come, but that didn’t do anything to dissuade him. So, the offer finally came back in February on a visit. He then visited again the next week before making an easy call to commit.

Rogers never really went through the recruiting process, though, because he was waiting on that offer. So, he wanted to visit LSU and some other schools, which is why he decommitted.

Rogers had second thoughts almost immediately. He actually recommitted to the A&M staff either a day or two later. He did not want to immediately announce it, so he waited a month to publicly re-commit. But, he was back in the fold almost right after decommitting.

-When A&M was looking for a quarterback late, the Aggies actually gave one last shot at Austin Novosad. After he had debated over the summer over sticking with Baylor or flipping to A&M, he decided on Baylor and that was it. But, Fisher and Dameyune Craig actually had a visit with him two weeks before the early signing. TCU and then-offensive coordinator Garrett Riley also went in, but it was not something Novosad wanted out. Eventually, he switched to Oregon during the Early Signing Period and he didn’t reciprocate the late interest, but it was news that Fisher himself visited and tried to change his mind.

-A&M expected to land some of the big-name national receivers in the class, so they didn’t pursue a lot of the in-state guys too heavily, even after offering a few of them. One in that category is four-star Texas signee Ryan Niblett of Aldine Eisenhower. The Aggies offered back in January but at least one coach was concerned about his speed. Niblett ran a 10.58 as a sophomore and 10.41 as a junior, though, so seemed an odd concern. He wasn’t all that interested in A&M but still just an odd story.

-There were a couple times when four-star wideout Adam Hopkins out of Georgia thought he was going to commit to A&M. He planned to do so in the summer following his official. We had it all written up and there were Crystal Ball predictions. But, A&M wanted him to hold off as they were after others at the position.

Then, the talks picked up again late. A&M talked to him about playing cornerback and, if he was okay with that, he was going to be sent a letter of intent in the early signing period. He ended up deciding he was fine with defense. But, only a couple days before, the Aggies decided not to end up sending him one. He ended up at Colorado instead.

-The whole Tony Mitchell deal at the end was fascinating to watch and maddening for the schools involved. Each of the three schools – A&M, Alabama and Auburn – thought they were going to land him. So did the commits in each of the three classes. He was telling a lot of people what they wanted to hear, likely because he was still a bit torn and also because he has a hard time telling coaches and recruits ‘no.’

So when he left A&M the weekend before the early signing period, there was a ton of optimism coming from A&M and Aggie sites. There was definitely a feeling from the Aggie camp that they were getting him. But, Alabama did not seem worried at all. And that was odd, and was why we held off on joining that optimism that was coming from elsewhere.

It quickly became evident that Mitchell was not actually going to A&M. But, Auburn had gotten him in for a quiet late visit and the Tigers had a ton of optimism as well. The night before his announcement, he had decided on Auburn. He had given stories to media folks and everything. But then he decided to stick with his Alabama pledge. We stopped pursuing info after the Aggies were out, so I don’t know the details there.

-A&M worked late to try and flip DeSoto running back Tre Wisner from Texas as a second back in the class. Tommie Robinson was pushing for him, but he had been solid to the Longhorns.

I’ll take a stab at it.  Those guys all suck and were mainly being propped up by BOMC.    Ag pulled in the players that really want to be there, Hicks was the only player truly on the board, as he’s the missing piece to a ‘24 title.

You forgot to throw in Jimbo being a sitting national championship winning coach who knows what it takes to win.

They do realize that this makes both Jimbo and Owens look incredibly fucking dumb? Of course not.

I am guessing his NFL grade was not very good or his medicals made everyone ask him to stay another year to prove he comes back fully.  This is a big help to A&M, but now the questions is how does the diva react to not being the primary target?

2 minutes ago, texifornia said:

Yep. Can hope it keeps the ball out of the hands of some of the divas and starts that portal process.  Does Stewart get as many targets last year with him in?  A large drop in targets might set the tone for another delicious portal season.

Amazing the examples of psychosis they constantly provide that they have to fabricate stories. They just couldn’t take it that they were his 3rd choice and probably only got him due to bags or NIL bribery, if they’ve even gotten the latter figured out yet.
so they have to invent a story that he wanted to be an aggy all along. They’ll all believe it, not because it’s true or even very plausible, but because they have to believe it.

It doesn't matter if they can't keep the QB upright.  And last I checked their OL isn't very good.

Losing Achane is going to sting as well.  He could make good yards out of nothing (i.e. their OL sucks).  They better hope the young RBs can do the same.

I can't believe that, "He only committed to the sips because Jimbo couldn't get to his phone" is a real thing now. It's even better than, "RC didn't offer". It's going to get beat into the ground probably for years and I'm here for it.

I'm not a recruiting expert or qualified to be a cfb HC but, I'd think a HC would have a recruiting dedicated cell phone w/ all their top targets' cell phones in the contact list.  Guess Jimbo had it on silent all day.

I cannot attest to the veracity of any of the following, but it was the word at the time:

Owens had a closely involved family member attached to his recruitment. That family member is also in a gang and part of southeast Texas drug world, and all that that entails.

Said male influence is involved with a murder investigation, or at least attempted murder, but the word was the real deal at the time. He peddled Owens' commitment for legal help, and a local Texas barrister was willing to help. There was no coordination with the program on the matter, but Owens subsequently committed.

Eventually it became clear there was a general disconnect with the Owens camp for Texas, and they damned sure weren't going to pay the player, or his relative, early. Along comes Louisville, willing to do all of that. The heat was off of the relative, thanks to Texas guy's help. Owens decommits and later commits to Louisville and starts taking the money. They'd guaranteed 7 figures in total over a 3+ year cycle if he signed and showed.

ATM gets fucking desperate late in the cycle starts lobbing numbers at various TBs, including Baxter. Owens takes the bait. Hicks and Owens ended up being the guys where the supporters were willing to open up in a big fashion to match or beat the market. Hill was effectively replaced by Owens on that front. Sanford (lol, but teammates with Hicks), Bisontis, and Reed also got something small. I think Rogers, Thomas and Brooks fit that bill too, but it's less clear. LSU didn't have any powder left when one or two of those guys decided they wanted to look around. Same for TCU in the end with various recruits, some of whom involved ATM.

What an in depth review of the relevant events.

1. Commits to Texas (despite really wanting aggy)

2. Decommits from Texas

3. Commits to Louisville

4. ...(some unimportant other stuff)...

5. Ends up with aggy

That will be $9.95 please

Narrator:  It didn’t work out well.

Ainias Smith is a WR.

Ruben Owens is a RB. I'm not sure Ainias Smith is returning to A&M after surgery to switch positions back to one he hasn't played at a couple years in College Station, to compete with Ruben Owens.

Well we will see if he takes targets away from muhammed and Stewart.  Maybe Bobby will have them throwing 50 times a game. Reuben will certainly be happy with that.

Weigman ain't lasting all season behind that OL if he's throwing 50 times a game.  Doubt he lasts the whole season regardless.

Once he learned ATM was going to hire an OC who "wants to score a lot of points," he was all-in with aggy.
