Everyone knew Elko was a big loss but it was probably even bigger than people realized.

I know aggys like @bizzle live in their imaginary world but Durkin is nowhere close to Elko's league.

So was Henson.  And let's not forget Jimbo shuffling around three offensive coaches right before fall camp.   Huge red flag, but those idiots couldn't see it when Looch and Tarp are saying it was some genius move by the almighty Dumbo.

The big thing you didn't address in your write-up is the legitimate difficulty of the schedule this year. I don't see how you can make a record prediction without taking that into consideration. Specifically, ATM goes App State, Miami, Ark @ Dallas, @ MSU, @ Bama, off week, @ Scar, Ole Miss, UF, @ Auburn over a 10 week stretch. Have you ever beaten both Mississippi schools in the same year? I think this schedule alone manufactures 3 losses, minimum.

the schedule's tough, but we should be more talented on paper than every team we face other than bama. we'll know a lot about this team after the app st - miami - ark - msu run. we drop 2 there and things could go south quick.

but i think we'll fucking win.

My scheduling discussion with bizzle after his write-up a few weeks ago. That App State to Bama stretch is looking as grim as we could have hoped. I’m not real sure I see a team that is “more talented on paper” than Miami or Arkansas. That might be true for MSU, but that’s not really relevant against Mike Leach.

A&M boards told me that Addazio for strings and Durkin were upgrades

MSU looks really good.

26 point win against a pretty good Memphis program and then a 22 point win against Arizona on the road.

I have no clue how they convinced themselves that Durkin> Elko. There's zero evidence to back it up. It's the type aggy delusion that makes them the dumbest people I've ever encountered.

Just go read @bizzlewrite up on Durkin. It's great stuff.

Just wait till that locker room starts to fracture.  Nothing is better for a locker room than a losing team with entitled 18 year old freshman getting paid to sit the bench while older players are playing not getting paid shit.  Soon those younger guys will either want playing time or the older ones will wonder why they aren’t getting money either.  Their team is right on track to become FSU here in a few years.  Also, why the fuck would any decent QB, OL, or skill player want to play in that shit offense.  I can understand RB, but you’re basically committing career suicide going to play for that cuck.

I agree that this process of fracture is beginning. But I think it’s a double edged sword. They’re playing a lot of those young high dollar guys. So you’ve got a bunch of veterans pissed because the young money guys lost to App State + the young money guys who aren’t playing pissed that the veterans playing instead of them lost to App State…

What’s the story on Max Johnson? Probably Jimbo’s second best QB since arriving in College Station, and he’s not playing.

aggys OL can't block and Johnson isn't mobile.

Also, I never understood why people thought Max Johnson was good. He was benched at LSU last season. There's recency bias because he had a good game against A&M.

Maybe. The only rationale I can come up with is King’s legs, but that’s not Jimbo’s “offense”.

King was scrambling all day yesterday. Outside of a big Achane run that was all aggy could muster on offense.

It may not be Jimbo's offense but he likely knows this OL can't block for shit.

I don't think Johnson is immobile. He's a pretty good athlete, just not as fast as King. He might be a more functional all around runner than King since he can run inside without the fear of dying at first contact.

King's dad might have been a factor, but I think King being in the system for 2.5 years vs 0.5 for Johnson was a lot of it

Evidently Jimbo's offense is like the Iliad and the Odyssey. Both are very hard to understand and are ancient.

The situation is so aggy…

OL is shit

Plays son of big time hs coach in ETex because recruiting and he can’t hit the broad side of a barn

Fans revolt because QB play is abysmal and A&M looks like total shit, but was fluffed all off season by Looch and co that they were contenders.

Jimbo now has the options of bench King and hurt recruiting and go with either backup that don’t know the Jimbo-system, one of which was meh at LSU and the other is a true Fr. None of them will really be able to do shit because of the OL.

To make things worse, Max J’s brother is a FR TE and if King continues to suck and yet start baby Johnson is going to start making waves…

I don't really agree with this.

He was benched against Arkansas  because they would send numbers and he was incapable of avoiding pressure with his legs.

I’m not sure that a 1-5 aggy team travels to South Carolina and wins.

That's the equivalent of Vic's second best chola.

Shame they don’t already play 9 conference games, and and wouldn't have umass late in the year as a free win.

every other game is pretty loseable. Sadly they won’t lose them all.  One does wonder though if they really crash and lose 4 or 5 of their first 7, how many combine prep opt outs and mid-season portal entrants there would be.

as we all learned last bowl season, jimbo needs about 99-100 healthy players to feel comfortable playing.

This is a really good breakdown on Max Johnson.

 https://secstatcat.com/a/article-426

"Hopes and goals are steadily rising within TAMU’s program. But while Johnson is an experienced conference passer with a notable pedigree, he will let down Aggieland if he winds up being nothing more than what his advanced stats have shown to date. No matter how Johnson’s game is compartmentalized, the numbers say he’s an average Joe passer by SEC standards."

"Johnson’s Sack Rate reached double-digits and nearly 40% of pressures took him down."

League average would be an upgrade

Sure, as a passer and I agree. Johnson is definitely a better passer than King.

He's also going to be sacked a lot. It's a double edged sword.

Getting sacked can easily be due to not processing fast enough or not getting rid of the ball to avoid a sack than being immobile

It could be but a sack rate that high is a pretty good indicator that Johnson isn't mobile.

Also, aggys OL is probably worse than LSU's OL last year. My opinion is aggy would improve in the passing game but they would also have a ton of negative plays.

In my perfect world, Ewers heals in a week and we beat Alabama in the rematch for the "Natty."

The balance of Longhorn exuberant joy and Aggie epidemic of massive strokes would give two weeks of universal perfection. It's about as likely as us leading Alabama going into the last ten seconds of the game when they "pulled away," so, of course, it could never happen.

Note to humorless cynics: No need to write "ain't gonna happen." It would just make you look like an Aggie.

You can be mobile and still get sacked a lot. See Hudson Card.

Hudson Card doesn't look very mobile to me.

That's probably the most shocking thing to me with Card based on what he did in high school. Even when Card gets outside the pocket he doesn't look elusive at all. After Arkansas last year, I was shocked after watching LBers chase him down.

People keep referring to Card as mobile but I've seen no evidence of this. Yeah, there are other reasons he gets sacked but his athleticism looks very average to me.

I did pick us to be in the CFP so we are still on track. [emoji869]

I think Card is mobile. His problem is hesitation. In that instant when he must decide whether to release or dodge, his mental engine stalls. If he decides to take off a fraction of a second earlier, he does fine.

Card is way too slow through progressions which leads to sacks but I don't see a good athlete at all. Which is weird based on what he did in high school.

The only time Card has success with his legs is when there's a defensive breakdown. I can't recall a single play where he's beat somebody with speed or made somebody miss.

Looking at the aggy OL, Fatheree doesn't seem to be any better than last year, maybe even a drop off as he had trouble with App. State DE.  Ogunbiyi looks like a JAG, doesn't matter if it's Wykoff or Foster at Center, both seem meh'.  Layden Robinson??  IDK, JAGish despite being pre-season all SEC team.  And Zuhn is absolutely awful at Left Tackle.

It's tough to tell.

Zion Nelson who is their starting LT and potential first round pick has only played limited snaps so far. He came back from injury this weekend. Also, Jaylan Knighton has only received limited carries after returning from injury this past weekend.

If Nelson and Knighton are full go the Miami offense is a completely different animal than what people have seen so far.

The Addazio hire was indefensible. He’s completely toxic and hasn’t been an offensive line coach in more than a decade. And he was considered to be behind the times as an offensive mind way back then. They have nobody on that offensive staff who is innovative. Just a bunch of dinosaurs, yes men, and bag droppers. I still don’t think Durkin is a bad DC. He was good at Ole Miss.

But they are in what, year five of the Jimbo experience and every recruiting class has been top 10? And he’s got that ridiculous contract? They are stuck with him unless they go full Tennessee and throw him under the NCAA bus. Maybe they make him hire a real OC this off season. I don’t know if his ego would allow it.

Same Old Aggies

I will preface what I will write in this segment. I do not like Texas A&M. I like nothing about their football program or their entire university, quite frankly. But what I am about to write is what I believe is the truth, and the truth is not good, Aggieland.

Of course, Texas A&M lost to Appalachian State 17-14 at home Saturday. It was a deserved loss, as the offense only scored one touchdown, they had less than 100 yards passing, and their defensive front got bullied when it mattered. And, anytime you’re losing at home as a top-ten team to a team from the Sun Belt (more on them later) it’s not a good feeling. But, this is about a lot more than one game, whether Aggieland wants to believe it or not.

Let’s start with some facts. Texas A&M has never won a real national championship in college football. And by real, I mean when the game was nationalized and racially integrated. The 1920’s do not count.

Texas A&M currently has head coach Jimbo Fisher on a 10-year $95 million contract to do one thing; win a national title.

This is not the first time aTm has tried this approach with their head coach. They famously pried Jackie Sherril away from a powerhouse Pitt program in the early 80s. They never finished higher in the AP poll than sixth, and he left the program seven years after coming with serious sanctions related to, you guessed it, wrongdoing related to Aggieland boosters.

We all know the rumors about Texas A&M's 2022 recruiting class. First off, congratulations to them. It’s legal now, and I have no problem with it. We don’t know how much was spent on that 2022 recruiting class, which really was the first class of the NIL era, but some people think that number is upwards of $20 or $30 million. College Station is not that fun, your facilities aren’t that good, and the program isn’t good enough to be recruiting the way they did without doing something shady. Which, again, is fair game, but facts are facts.

If it wasn’t for the win over Alabama last year that was a fluke then and is still a fluke, the vibe around Texas A&M going into this year would’ve been much different.

Three national title-winning coaches, seemingly in the primes of their careers in Bear Bryant, Jackie Sherill, and Jimbo Fisher, never really got close to a national title. Fisher is still active, but the writing is on the wall in my opinion.

Texas A&M has not finished better than 5th in the AP Poll in the integrated era of college football.

Finally, for emphasis, Texas A&M, despite having nearly every built-in advantage possible for the entirety of modern college football, hasn’t won a thing.

I lay out these facts to help you understand that the problem in College Station is not the head coach. It’s not quarterback Haynes King, even though he is really bad. It’s not even the fact they play in the toughest division in college football in the SEC West.

The problem is you, Aggie fans and boosters. The boosters have too much say, and too much power at Texas A&M. They have for decades, dating back to when Bear Bryant roamed the sidelines. It only intensified during the Sherill years, boosters convinced they deserved a return on their investment when they helped finance what was then the biggest contract for a sports coach anywhere in college football. Now in 2022, in a world where you can legally pay recruits, they are a necessary evil, something that even the AD has to deal with for fears for his job, if he makes an unpopular but necessary decision that causes fundraising to drop. It is a group of rich boosters cosplaying as owners of a college football team, and they’re no good at it.

It’s not like that at Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, or even Georgia now that Kirby Smart has changed the booster culture there. It’s their program, not the boosters’.

Joe Paterno, for all of his faults and shortcomings, said it best.

“I want your money but not your two cents.”

Instead of concerning themselves with off-season recruiting battles, maybe the boosters will take a step back and maybe, just maybe, let the elite coaches and players do the coaching and playing. Until then, a title isn’t coming to Aggieland, and as it stands, that is poetic justice. All that money is just putting lipstick on a pig. Guess what, the pig still stinks when you get close to it.

I don't think Durkin is a bad DC but he's a clear downgrade from Elko.

Also, why do people think Durkin worked miracles at Ole Miss? They finished 118th and 28th in FEI defense while he was there with an upperclassmen heavy defensive roster last year. Think they lost 8 of their top 12 tacklers.

Durkin turned 1 good defensive year (not elite) into a nice pay raise with a roster made up with experienced players. It gives me flashbacks to Orlando's year 1 at Texas.

Nice to see someone other than us get the “boosters are ruining the program” treatment, but let’s be clear - Jackie Sherrill never won a national championship as a head coach.
