August 3, 20205 yr Also, this lady is at the top of my list, but I might be biasedhttps://m.facebook.com/heidi.hake.5/videos/10222396820845992/?extid=uXrxJzgt7cbT7S5E&d=n
August 3, 20205 yr Stevie Nicks grinds people's gears. Not mine. Sara McLachlin has an unbelievable voice. As does Natalie Merchant.
August 3, 20205 yr Alison Krauss has the voice of an angel and was the first name to pop into my head when I read the thread title. I love several of the other women listed above, but I'll stay with Alison. Edited August 3, 20205 yr by Jerry Callo

Grace Potter, the girl from Lake Street Dive, and Brandi Carlyle get honorable mention. Rep is for being the only one to mention Brandi Carlile...and the 3X Linda Ronstadt thing. August 7, 20205 yr I'm lukewarm on her music as a whole, but her voice absolutely kills me. Crap quality video but you get the idea.
August 7, 20205 yr Also belongs on the list of female vocalists that can cause Class 4 scrotal aneurysms:
August 8, 20205 yr When she switches from her Rod Stewart tribute at the 1:40 mark to her own voice, GOT-FUCKING-DAMN! No need to worry sugar...

Yeah, she was a world-class, effortless natural singer. Amazing. I was on a subway in NYC around 1989 or so, and a stunning woman got on and sat across from me. Calf-length bright purple overcoat, dressed to the nines, all by herself. It was Donna Summer. To say she had "star power" would be a major understatement.

I too like adele's booming voice, but holy shit if I don't feel divorced 3 times or like I'm getting Fatal Attractioned by the end of her songs. Others whom I truly enjoy: Cyndi Lauper Alison Krauss Dolores O'Riordan Patsy Cline Tina Turner
August 8, 20205 yr Neko case. Chan Marshall (cat power). Hannah Reid (London grammar). Elena tonra (daughter).
August 8, 20205 yr Any of those women can sing me a lullaby. Will also add Florence Welch. Annie lennox. Emmylou Harris. And this particular performance Edited August 8, 20205 yr by 52-80

I hate you, I really do!

Yea, I mean she's 5'10", drop dead gorgeous, amazingly talented, and pretty damn funny and engaging on instagram. I'd also add Hope Sandoval since I can't believe we're on page two and she hasn't come up.

August 11, 20205 yr I’m bored with so much of the “new” stuff so I’ve gone back to listening to older stuff. I cued up some old Louis Armstrong stuff on Spotify and he does some duets with Ella Fitzgerald. It is truly remarkable how clear, perfect and incredible her voice is. No autotune. Simple recording devices. Just her. Every note coming out of her mouth is pure perfection.

August 11, 20205 yr I don't believe Aimee Mann has been posted yet. Also check this chick out, Nikka Costa. She goes off at the end of the song.

August 13, 20205 yr I'd go with Karen Carpenter. If honey were a sound it would be her voice. As far as greatest female voices go I would throw Streisand into the mix. She had a once in a generation voice.
August 13, 20205 yr Stevie Nicks sounds like a goat being strangled. She was the third best female singer in her own band, behind Christine McVie and Lindsey Buckingham....

Her version of Keith Whitley's "When You Say Nothing at All" may be the best vocal recording of any song I can remember. Another great song that gets very little airplay, or attention is a haunting tale based on a true story from the 1850's about two small boys that froze to death: CHIEF
July 26, 20223 yr Here’s Joni singing at the Newport Folk Festival this weekend. Before you rag on her voice, remember that she’s 78 and still recovering from a brain aneurysm in 2015 that left her unable to walk or talk. I think it’s pretty damn cool Here’s one clip there are others out there if interested
July 27, 20223 yr So many good ones here. And that Joni performance is just amazing. But as I scrolled through this thread, I am floored that one of the all-time greatest isn’t mentioned: Patty Griffin.
July 28, 20223 yr That's a nice performance. This is still one of my least favorite things of all time
July 28, 20223 yr Linda Ronstadt, Karen Carpenter, Nina Simone, Pat Benetar, Stevie Nicks, EmmyLou Harris
July 28, 20223 yr Ella Fitzgerald. In the days before we had kids, a little Ella on the stereo was a sure way to ensure sexy times with the missus later.

I know there are other more classic examples like Aretha or Whitney Houston, but Dolores O'Riordan is an all timer for my taste. Beautiful voice that felt visceral, aggressive, and feminine all at once. RIP.
