Wild how the explosion blew out any fire that was there initially.

I was typing while you posted, but if it was a pure oxygen explosion due to the chemicals involved, it would blow the fire out because all the available oxygen went boom

One things for certain, bombs don’t produce that deep red smoke hue.   So all the twittertards can chill on this being a bombing.   This was certainly a chemical explosion.  It mentioned sodium nitrate, which when heated creates Sodium Nitrite and pure oxygen.   Takes 1000degreesF to do it, but pure oxygen in quantity will create a spectacle.

IF this was the govt storing dangerous chemicals, it shows that bureaucratic decisions/blunders can be worse than terrorists.

Sodium nitrate would explain why it looked like a thermobaric weapon at detonation.

Where should we store all this confiscated ammonium nitrate?

In the fireworks warehouse?

Sounds good to me.

Miller time?

You're goddamn right.

thats a low-scale look of what everyone at Texas City experienced.

that looks like a ship carrying explosive material on fire and going boom.   Or like Texas City, some sort of fertilizer going boom

We heard that one at Fort Sam in San Antonio.

Quick question.  Been out of the loop for a while about all the goings on in the region.

Let's just say it was.  Who's responsible?  Or accidental?

Was it louder than the Chicxulub comet impact?

I mean they use that to put out oil field fires, basically push all the oxygen out

Lebanon is on the verge of collapse.

I will always hold a sweet spot for Beirut.  Back in 1972, '73 and early '74 while working in Kuwait (think oklahoma, no booze, nothing) our weekend getaway was Libon.  Flying Kuwait Airways (again, no liquor) and landing in Beirut I noticed troops everywhere and tanks and artillery all around the airport and runways.  Nevertheless, we arrived at the super smart Phoenician Hotel which had swim up mermaids (live ones) in the swimming pool bar staring at us through the plexiglass windows.  I later learned the hotel was leveled in the Civil War.  A night up in the Cedars at the Casino was just what I needed.  A quick trip south to Sidon and Tyre with a driver (who had a big assed weapon).  As I toured the ancient Phoenician grounds by myself around the ruins Israeli jet aircraft swooped low enough and fast enough to scare off my driver.

A few hours later thankfully he returned as I had no clue how I was to get back to Beirut other than a camel.  We stopped at a bar on the way back to Sidon and just as we crossed the Litani River I spotted a hole in the wall bar. I wanted a drink. The driver told me we were in the Arab Partitioned dry side of Libon.  I asked if the could get me a coke then instead.  He informed me you cannot drink coke in Arab world only Pepsi.  As I started to exit his car he told me to get back inside.  We were in the area of shall we say anti Ugly American.  He retrieved my Pepsi and we headed back to the hotel.  This was repeated many weekends (Friday-Saturday in Arab world) in Beirut proper.  I didn't vernture outside the city any more except up in the hills to the Casino.  I learned Libon had never had a recent census taken.  The Government required a Christian President and a Muslim something.  The Christians knew they were badly outnumbered and would never allow a census.  Sort of sounds like America today lol.  Anyway I loved the place, still do, and hated to watch them rip themselves apart in a Civil War with the damned Christians/Hezbollah/Syria and every other devil on our planet.

What in the fuck are you talking about?

The census has been cancelled.

Backing up my initial reply with some figures. This is from Tianjin in 2015:

The second explosion registered as a magnitude 2.9 earthquake and generated seismic shock-waves with energy equivalent to 21.9 tonnes of TNT.[18][19][20] The resulting fireballs reached hundreds of meters in height.[21] Around 23:40 (15:40 UTC) on 15 August, a series of eight smaller explosions occurred in the port as fire from the original blasts continued to spread.[22][23][24] The total energy release was equivalent to 28 tonnes of TNT, or 100GJ.

This is what just happened in Beirut:

Richter readings are in the 3.3-3.5 range  So the blast was probably about 10 times as powerful as Tianjin.

For what it's worth, I dated a chick that was better at Beirut when she was bombed...

Another comparison: Black Tom Island explosion was estimated at 5.0-5.5 on Richter based on damage and distance from shockwave. Known munitions included one barge fully loaded w/ 100,000 lbs of TNT.

Best guess, the nitrates were destined for rockets Hezbollah was making to bombard Israel with. The Israelis have made very clear that since Hezbollah has taken over the government, and has cowed any internal opposition with murder and bombings, that they would not stand by while a rocket arsenal was built up to attack them. They would make Hezbollah pay regardless of any blowback. Hezbollah has kept their rocket factories producing weapons and has located them, and their storage buildings, in civilian areas to deter their destruction. With a more Iranian friendly government coming in American, and the political Left/Right divide widening in Israel, Hezbollah is learning that their tactics of using the civilian population as shields is no longer a deterrent. I just hope any reckoning finishes before the election as the current trends are favorable for Iran and Hezbollah. Again, best guesses.

Spent several months just offshore of Beirut in the 80's ferrying supplies into the port. Place was wrecked then and smelled of raw sewage.

Yeah, it's right in the middle of the port downtown.

Eh, let's worry about that tomorrow. Cheers.

Lots of flying glass in that one video.  Somebody gonna need some Band-Aids

they normally don't build a 'fireworks' factory in the middle of a port or industrial area or city

good rule in life : don't fuck with isreal

another good rule life : do a better job of hiding our bomb making / missile factory

FWIW Trump called it an "attack" twice just now. Said that is what his military advisors said.

Yep, says Joint Chiefs informed him that it was a direct assault with a “bomb”

not CR, not fake news.  CIC channeling top military intelligence to assert this was an “attack” with a “bomb”

If/when the joint chiefs say that, that’s news.

I'll bet a pizza that the joint chiefs didn't say that and will have to awkwardly correct the record in cr fashion.
